Nightmare, yes, the REAL PotO is a classic horror, but ALW specifically wrote his musical as a romance. Therefore, the movie is a romance with elements of classic horror. Though I agree those icky nouveau fans deserve a punjab.
...and you do realize how many people ARE ignorant about classic horrors, like Frankenstein. They realize its a book, yes, but they usually think thats the monster's name. And that he's stupid.

1. 'Fans' (not true Phans) who see the 2004 movie and say: "He's so hot, only if he keeps the mask on"
2. 'Fans' that spell his name with a 'c' (Eric)
3. People that say he can't sing.
4. People that are repulsed by his 'deformity' (Which is really a sunburn)
5. People that ask: "Is there a book?"
6. Raoul is so much better than Erik (Mindless Soul)
((They ALL piss me off!!))
My phantom is the Best. I adore Him.. he is truely a Kindered soul, i am even going as him for jeans for genes day at my school ^^
and My Kiki is named after Him, EriKiki-Kyo Gaunt III

Erin Sovenya Nightmare, yes, the REAL PotO is a classic horror, but ALW specifically wrote his musical as a romance. Even so, I cannot stand it being classified as "romance." Gaston Leroux wrote it as a horror; it should be portrayed as a horror, with elements of romance, which, despite how Alexander Llyod Webber wrote it, is how I see it. Yes, I do realize how ignorant a lot of people tend to be about classics, and it irritates me. Leave it to the movie company to ruin a good book---and Halloween companies which list Frankenstein's monster merchanise as "Frankenstein," further leading people to believe that "Frankenstein" is the monster, not the creator. And yes, it irritates me further for others to think the monster an idiot---he is highly intelligent, and not all fault can be put on him for "acting mindlessly." As he was given no education on right and wrong, it is impossible to say what he did was wrong. How could he have done wrong, when he did not know he was doing wrong? Even further, Victor ran from his creation once he came to life, leaving him to fend for himself. My favorite quote from that book: "O cursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turn from me in disgust?" ...It is shameful what is done to classic horror these days...back to The Phantom of the Opera...

Indeed. Erik is not supposed to be some man-slutty pimp. He is supposed to be repulsive to look at, something people would not want to relate to in the way Christine and Erik did in the ALW musical.
Although...it would be funny to see a romantic version of Frankenstein. Just for shits and giggles.

Although...it would be funny to see a romantic version of Frankenstein. Just for shits and giggles. I would loathe that. I am a loyal fan of the book. And yes, I did not feel Erik nearly as scarred as he should have been. I was rather disappointed that even with the scar, he still looked somewhat handsome.

That damn sunburn is exactly why I am so disappointed in the movie. Or, at least, eighty percent so. Don't these people know what the word "deformity" means? *Twitch*

Disney did a better job of it for a children's movie a few times in movies such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Quasimodo, obviously) and Treasure Planet (several pirates come to mind, but the character that sticks out the most is Long John Silver).

There are deformed people in Treasure Planet? Never saw that movie, hearing that it was horrendus. But I might yet. Hmm.

Treasure Planet did not get the appreciation or the attention I feel it deserves. It is basically Treasure Island in space, and from what I remebered from the book, it was pretty accurate, though some things were taken out (the "black spot," for instance). I might have to read the book again to be sure, though.

But I do have to say, for the small budget the movie was good. I don't think it would have been good with alot of funding and big actors.
