Noticing the large pink fairy boy by him, Brim sucked in his lower lip, trying desperately to stifle his cries. Unfortunately, it didn't quite help to portray the tough image that he wanted, as the startled child continued to make strained whimpering sounds and sputtered loudly. Snot poured forth from his fluctuating nostrils as he turned his body sharply from Asra, cradling a bruised arm and two badly scraped knees.

Stupid fairy boy and his stupid races! Brim wasn't sure what hurt more, his pride or his body, but regardless, he had no plans of playing nice right now, as he completely ignored Asra's question. He was upset and frustrated and annoyed and really, really upset, damnit. He sniffled and shook in small bursts, as his narrowed, wet eyes searched frantically for Akina. Where was she? He wanted his mommy to hold him and tell him it would be okay and buy him more cotton candy and kiss his boo-boos... in a manly, tough way.

Meanwhile, back at the cotton candy stand, Akina was happily buying some more cotton candy, hoping to surprise Brimstone with a special treat later. It distracted her from noticing that he had fallen at all as she passed the change over to the man, smiling awkwardly as she realized she didn't quite have enough for two. She apologized and dropped her gaze, deciding that she would just have to get one for Brim. Akina was a grown woman after all; candy was a frivolous pursuit.

"Brim, don't turn away from me, I want to help you. I promise if you let me help you I'll give you a gift. How does that sound?"

He extended his hand slowly, past the boy so that it rested before him. "Turn around for me? Let me help you." His words were soft and soothing, like a warm embrace. He longed to do nothing more than hug the child until he felt at peace, but Brim did not seem like the kind of child open to such affections. It ached Asra to hold himself back, it wasn't in his nature.

Tentatively he reached out with the other hand, brushing the boy's hair softly with a light touch.

Brimstone heard the words of the creature behind him, but he was not one to be soothed by kindness or rationale. No, treats and getting his way seemed to work much faster. Hey, wait! ...a gift? Still, as he felt Asra touch his hair, Brimstone jumped, turning harshly around to glare at the older Shattered. The only person who could tocuh him in a nice way like that was Akina. Otherwise, the incidental touching must happen in some kind of wrestling match... or something. The only glimmer of hope here was that the neon-haired boy seemed to be a mixture of anger, frustration, and hurt as opposed to his general straight up fury.

Remaining silent, the child would never admit his interest in the present, but his lack of refusal suggested his acceptance that a gift would be his reward if he didn't try to attack Asrafel. Still whimpering, Brim continued to hold his boo-boo, starting with guarded curiosity now at the man before him.

As much as it pained him to see the boy pull away, Asrafel felt a glint of hope as he turned around. To be rejected by his brethren was heartbreaking, but he had no choice. He knew he must do what his duty, and move on.

Still.. he silently wished that one day, as Brim grew, he would come to know and trust Asrafel more than this first encounter. There was too much anger in the boy's gaze, too much pain. It worried him. It scared him. It reminded him of someone he missed very, very much. That thought alone scared him most of all.

Without further ado, he touched his chest softly, and it glowed at the action. The silhouette of his ribcage flashed for a moment, before the orb pushed it's way out of his suddenly liquified skin, stopping a heartbeat before Brim. There it rotated on an invisible axis, floating effortlessly as tendrils of light burst from it like tiny sunflares.

"Touch this orb, and I promise you that one day soon you will be stronger, bigger, everything your soul wants you to be. Perhaps, if it is in your destiny, you may even fly."

Asrafel wasn't sure of this, but from what he had seen, it seemed a likely possibility that the boy had the power within him. He simply needed the strength to use it.

As the bright orb of light pulled forth from Asra's skin, Brimstone's eyes went wide as he leaned forward to get a better look at the strange object. He wanted to measure it, to study it, to figure out its origins, but for once, Asrafel's words made sense to Brim. He looked up with a guarded curiosity flaring in his swirling eyes. "Fly?" It was all he needed to hear.

Jutting out a palm, Brim attempted to snatch the orb from the air. He wanted to fly now. He wanted, more than anything, to be big and strong. Most of all, he wanted to beat Asra in a race the next time he saw him.

Making her way down the boardwalk, Akina was growing quickly more upset; she didn't see Brimstone or Asrafel anywhere. Had she been a fool to trust a stranger? Had he run off with her son? Sudden pangs of the fall hit her empath sense hard as the elf grabbed a nearby railing for support. They were old emotions, she could feel that, but Brim's aura always made its way to her, even if time elapsed before she felt it. So, heading toward where the feeling had come from, Akina drew her face into a line of worry, praying that her son was okay.

While Brim's intentions were clear, he failed in snatching the orb quickly enough. It snatched him instead. Soft tendrils tightened before wrapping around the boy, encasing him like a mummy in light before sinking into his body a heartbeat later. Once the tendrils were gone, the orb sank peacefully back into Asrafel's chest, flaring quickly before dying off.

Asrafel thought he could just barely hear the sound of Akina as she grabbed the railing high above them, and instinctively looked up. He saw a hand, but as quickly as he'd seen it, it disappeared.

"Ah.. your mother is worried about you! We should go back and let her know you're okay.." He turned his gaze back to Brim, his lips thinning tightly in thought. He still wasn't sure how badly Brim was hurt. "I'll need to carry you.. at least for now." Please don't fight me, Asrafel's thoughts begged silently.

Congratulations, Brimstone is now on his growth quest! In order to complete his quest, you must first complete 3 PDs with other Shattered that Brim has not met yet. Once these PDs are completed, a final quest will be revealed for you and Brim to complete together. Until then, good luck!

Unable to fight it, Brimstone let the light take him, finding his mind transfixed on the feeling it gave him. His head reared back slightly, casting soft green glows above him, but gradually, his eyelids closed softly as the strange orb ran its course. Asra's voice finally shook him back to reality, though the Shattered felt a touch of dizziness.

Still, he was not far gone enough to let Asrafel hold him. Sticking out his bottom lip, he inched backward from the winged boy, issuing a weak, "No..." The whisper of his voice was enough to reach the elf.

Above the pair on the boardwalk, Akina practically flew over the railing at the sudden revelation, landing neatly on the ground behind Asrafel. Brim saw her worried face, and his anger melted. He reached out pudgy arms to her and muttered a scared, "Mommy! The elf nearly crashed into him as she scooped him into her arms, landing on her knees in the sand.

"Are you alright, B?" she asked gently, rubbing a thumb over his cheek. The child nodded softly, resting his head on her arm and immediately shoving a thumb into his mouth. Usually, Akina would scold him for such behavior, but she didn't want to upset him any more. Turning to face Asra, Akina continued to rock her son as she quietly asked, "He didn't try to attack you, did he?" The elf knew her son well, and she knew that all of his accidents were caused by him and him alone. "Oh, I'm sorry. And after you were so nice... He's just a very stubborn child."

In her arms, Brim had ceased his sputtering, letting his eyes flicker shut. The fall, the orb, and the long day had sucked out whatever energy that the young child had left, leaving him on the brink of a complete nap in his mother's arms.

The denial bit at Asra's heart, and he felt the sting of it clench within him. He dropped his hand slowly, standing up as he heard the sound of Akina landing.

As he watched the two interact, his ache only grew, but mixed emotions flooded him. While being rejected by his own kin was disheartening, the bond his guardian had been able to create with the unusually distant boy gave Asrafel hope that someone was giving Brim the care and devotion he needed. Though it was not him, it was enough.

Asrafel shook his head silently as Akina spoke to him, giving her a sad smile. "No, not at all. He just lost track of where he was running, and.. well, here we are. He might be a little hurt, perhaps if you checked his arms and knees later when you are alone.."

He rose a hand and patted Akina on the shoulder softly, giving her a sweet smile. "Thank you for taking such good care of him. Truly he is blessed to have someone like you in his life."

The bag of cotton candy that had hung from Asra's wrist by a string brushed against Akina as he touched her. His eyes flickered to it, and immediately he pulled it off his wrist, resting it in her arms with Brim as a gift, a token of appreciation.

"I should get back to my father. I look forward to seeing you again, Miss Akina. Both of you."

His voice softened at the last few words, as his eyes danced over Brim's sleeping form for a moment. Sadness, an unfamiliar emotion in Asrafel's face, flickered for only a brief second. He returned to Akina, his eyes shutting tight as he grinned broadly.

Cradling Brimstone, Akina let her lean fingers trace over his elbows, arms, knees, and legs at Asra's suggestion. She found some abrasions that the toddler tensed at, but the general diagnosis was good. He was just a little bruised and bumped. Thankfully, he hadn't killed himself... or anyone else.

Still perusing Brim, the elf suddenly felt a warm hand on her shoulder. She glanced up at Asra, feeling her empathy senses flooded by his bittersweet emotion. Her eyes wavered to the nuclear Shattered in her arms for a moment, wondering just what had happened. "Oh, I don't mind. Brim really is a good boy inside..." I think... "Just... thank you so much, Asrafel. I think it is good for Brim to have as many positive influences in his life as possible." Akina smiled genuinely.

Sliding Brim into a more comfortable position, Akina became aware of another gift that Asra was presenting them with: a bag of cotton candy. "Oh, I couldn't," she began, feeling shameful at his generosity. Still, she had refused him enough for today, and it was a gesture of kindness that she would be rude to turn down. "Thank you again. I just can't say thank you enough!" Akina laughed lightly, still feeling a bit embarrassed, and rose to her feet to bid the fairy boy goodbye.

"We both look forward to seeing you too. Have a good night, Asra." She smiled back, pushing his sadness out of her mind as the happiness he radiated was just so comforting.

As they small group broke up, Akina began the trip home, letting her gaze flicker back to Brimstone periodically. For someone so mischievious and ornery, he still looked so innocent while he slept. What an oxymoron, the elf laughed to herself as she turned the corner. Their two forms disappeared on the horizon as the life on the boardwalk continue to stir around them.
