"I don't know," Jair admitted, reaching forward to take the item from the riverbed, rubbing the mud off of it with his thumb. He held it up to the light so that they could see it better and slowly rotated it.
It was circular and flat, imprinted on both sides with images.
"It's pretty though," he grinned, holding it out to Naida to take. "Here, take a better look at it."

"I don't that is normally found here...." Naida murmured.
She didn't know why, but it stood out at the bottom of this river in a way that it seemed so perfect. Though she couldn't explain why and she didn't even know what the object was. She took the round thing and turned it over in her hands.
"What is that on the thing?"

"Some sort of picture, I guess," Jair murmured, floating so close to Naida that his head was just about on her shoulder as he peered at the item in her hands curiously. "Maybe when Aunt Feng and Uncle Ryu come out with us we can ask them about it. I bet they'll know what it is!"
He reached out with one finger and brushed it against the item.
"It's bumpy," he noted thoughtfully.

"I think it's because the picture on it... it's not like... lines, it's been raised sort of. Like the long bumps make up the picture so you can see it very well," Naida replied.
She wondered how that was done, certainly not natural at all!
Unknown to the children, when Feng and Ryu noticed the two were gone they were frantic, especially Feng. Granted, it became clear they weren't in the cave, since there wasn't much of the area inside to search. So the two had hurried out.

Jair nodded. "Yeah," he murmured. "I wonder where it came from."
He took it out of Naida's fingers and stuck it between his teeth, biting down on it to see if it would make an impression.
Nope.
"Tastes awful," he frowned, holding it out for Naida to take back again.

The thing about being in water is that you couldn't tell if someone slobbered over something, because everything was wet anyways. Though Naida had to giggle at what Jair tried to do.
"Well I don't think stone would be tasty... at least.. .I think it's stone, because stone is very hard and can be shiny."
Though it wouldn't be any stone she recognized.
Moments later though the adult mers (for they were adults now).
"Naida!" Feng called out rushing towards her daughter and plucking the little girl up, "You didn't say where you were going? Why did you go out? Why didn't you say anything?"
"Feng... calm down.. wow... I think... now you know how mother feels sometimes," Ryu mused a bit, though... "But she is right, you two should have told us where you were going."

Despite the fact that Jair was confused as to why they would have been worried, he felt somewhat ... un-worried about as Naida got so much attention.
"But we just came here," he pointed out, his argument logical in his own mind. "We just came to where there's light ... we didn't get lost or anything, and Uncle Ryu took me here before so it must be safe ..."
Not that the little mer could imagine any sort of danger in the first place.

Feng whirled around and grabbed Jair with her free arm (since it only took one arm to hold or cuddle a second of their size).
"There are fishes in here bigger than the two of you," she told him, "It's not safe sometimes and also we don't know where you are which would get anyone worried."
Ryu actually found it ironic that Feng was worried about fish seeing as she use to bait those fish when they were that small.

Jair snuggled against Feng, his fears from earlier completely gone now.
"Bigger fish?" he asked, his eyes wide and innocent as he looked up at her. "What would bigger fish do to us?"
Cannibalism was a new concept to him.

"Eat you of course," Feng replied, "Fish eat smaller fish, especially when it's not the same type of fish as them, and you're very small."
It was a wonder why it hadn't occurred to Jair, Ryu thought seeing as he had thought Feng was going to eat him at one point.

In Jair's defense, he had never seen a fish before - he was after all less than a day old.
But at her words, his eyes grew very large while his pupils grew very very small.
"Eat me?" he squeaked, curling up in a ball and making himself as small as possible. "Why would they eat me? That's not good!"

"Feng stop that, you're going to terrify him," Ryu told his sister, before explaining, "Fish get hungry and some eat meat, and smaller fish tend to strike them as easier targets. As long as you stay out of their way you'll be fine."
After all they had grown up in this river and they hadn't been eaten at all.

"Are there a lot of big fish in here?" Jair asked anxiously, looking suspiciously up at Feng. He was beginning to wonder if she got some sort of sadistic pleasure out of frightening him - since she had been doing just that since before he had even seen her.
"Because I don't want to be eaten," he added, looking over at Ryu.

"There's a few," Ryu murmured, "But don't worry, your aunt is only worrying because use to bait those fish when she was your age."
"Hey! I was young and silly," Feng pouted hugging both children to her chest, "And it's serious, I don't want them to be out here alone."
Ryu sighed and wondered if motherhood had seriously messed with his sister's brain. It was like normal Feng with mother combined...

Jair looked sharply up at Feng. "But if you did it and you're okay then what's wrong with us doing it?" he demanded. "You had fun and played why can't we?"
He fidgeted when she held him closer to her chest, trying to get free and unsquish himself.
