Could Real Life be that weird?

No... Of course not.

There are probably a thousand ways someone can describe summer, but the single most descriptive word is sticky there is sticky as in homemade ice cream, that goes hand in hand with the hot months, there is sticky as in honey, that can be harvested, there is sticky as in cotton candy sold at the county fair and there was sticky as in sweat from which even the cool of night would not let you escape.

The dry heat that came with daylight was wished away on the evening breeze, yet even that mildly friendly caress did nothing to dry the moisture from her skin, but it was by far a more functional time of day to garden, when one wasn’t likely to get heat-stricken.

With Tiki Torches set out for light, citronella keeping the night fliers away, Trivii sank her spade into the soil that she had let soak with the hose for the last hour. She had put the pixies and the prince together painting her herb pots, and knew she only had about twenty minutes before war broke out, they were always fighting worse than siblings.

Sometimes learning about the history of the two races was almost worth the chaos of asking about it.

Talk about sticky. She smiled. Looking at Nell, “Vocabulary lesson darling… I am very vignette. A term used for more than just gardening.” She trailed into a hum half singing an old song under her breath, She tipped her vignette trumpet vine from its flimsy black container before loosening the roots and tamping it into the hole.

Completely oblivious Nell played in the shadows cast by torch light.

Sighing she settled her little version of a Faery House at the root of the vine just in time to hear a pot shatter.

Dear Diary,

The tale end of summer, when the last smells of overheated concrete and magnolia finally fade and dither away.

I think often of pencils and paper, the sounds children make as the carve their own way. To many autumn represents a time of loss, as life fades from the land. But to me it has other attractions. as people are slowly driven indoors by increasingly inhospitable weather, a kind of magic happens that draws people to one another.

Days spent in tea shops, mornings getting soup on for supper, the delightful scents of cooking onion and roasting hen.

Trivii was sleeping again. but Nell didn't mind. Her Mother appeared incapable of just enjoying the silence. Today's nap was on the recovered sofa in the den, which meant she could explore the room and entry hall.

Swirling in her shadows the wisp swung around the room, imagining faint sounds of chiming brass bells or the occasional whip of silk as she spun to the gentle tap and thrall of a fife player no-one could hear but her.

There was more still for her to see, she knew. The world did not end at the threshold or window pane! She wanted more.

Spotting the shadow clad gem, in her laps of the den, Allure halted, eying the sparkling red-orange of the carnelian cabochon.

Which seamed to have life all on its own it had to be magic.

Magic of the darkest sort.

The sepia toned Faery looked this way and that. What a prize his people would find if he were too....

Ducking back to her mother Nell tucked herself into the crook of Trivii's arm with an almost sigh, the shadows tapered and curled inward, clinging to the polished stone surface like a fog.

Stomping his foot, the prince almost fell from where he perched in the air, as the process had him folding his wings down for the moment. Startled he quickly righted himself and departed, embarrassed and pleased there had been no -one to see his error.

Dear Diary,

Its raining, this is the third day in a row, its getting hard to get things done..

Contemplating taking a day off and going into town to spend time at the library, getting some research done might quiet down my editor.

The last of the berries from August, Trivii stared into her freezer, before withdrawing the double bagged quart of raspberries. The Pixie menace was gone for the moment leaving her alone with Nell, a perfect chance to whip up a treat.

Nell drifted into an unoccupied corner of the counter to study her mother, the woman had obviously gone insane, muttering to herself.

Chuckling Trivii placed the delicate fruit in a bowl of warm water to defrost while she went rummaging for a couple large sauce-pans. Coming up successful she set them on the stove, starting water boiling in one she went hunting until she came up with a bag of rice, which she set aside. Returning to the berries the cat-girl pried open the freezer bags and broke off a small piece which started to crush and bleed about her hand as she dropped it in the warming water the liquid shifted into a vibrant pink. Rinsing her hand clean, she sighed as the scent began to permeate through the kitchen.

The wisp couldn't help herself as she drifted closer to rest in the fruit bowl.

Trivii laughed when she spotted the wisp. "Nelli its a shame you don't eat, I am hell on wheels in a kitchen." Shrugging she turned and measured rice into the water, stirring it carefully. She didn't really think that the wisp could understand her yet so she remembered out-loud. "When I was younger I ran a large household almost by myself for the Master and his Wife... preparing for parties, writing menus. Entertainment."

Shimmering slightly Nell drew in her shadows, what was mom talking about now?

Reducing the heat she glanced back at Nell and sighed. Not that any of it was important. She placed a cover on the rice and reclined against the counter for a moment of memory. "No need to worry Nell, I'm just a little homesick, it happens. I wonder about you though, who you were, who you'll be. You don't even know what I'm talking about do you?"

A brief flash of energy and vague sweep of shadowy tendrils was all the reply she could give her new mother, Nell had been someone once, a very long time ago.

Turning to stir the rice again she saw the moment of alertness in Nell and smiled. Moving quietly across the kitchen she pulled cream from the refrigerator and moved the sugar canister closer to the stove, she added the sugar first to keep the cream from curdling and then slowly stirred in cream in equal parts to the rice, watching over a long number of minutes as the starch from the rice thickened the cream. Finally removing it from the heat

Putting away the saucepan she hadn't needed, she pulled out a pretty glass bowl and layered some raspberries, some pudding, some raspberries, some pudding until all of both were in the dish. Smiling at the effect Trivii said "Yeah, I've still got it."

Wanting to see what her mother still had the wisp whirled forward to look in the bowl only to flop on top of it quickly stuck in the sticky suction of the pudding.

Turning to carry it to the refrigerator so it could set up, she blinked and blinked again. The set it down again and laughed, "Not yet Nell we can't eat it until its had a chance to cool and set up." Using a pair of tongs the cat-girl carefully pulled Nell free, still laughing she rinsed her off in the sink.

Dear Diary,

Tonight I write because I cannot sleep. The date sticks in my mind, 11/10/09 and I smile I can see some indeterminate meaning in it. But there are meanings and omens to be found in everything, everywhere; I think that's what I will write about for my next article...

"The Moon promised to give light after the Sun had run his diurnal course;
and she said also that she had already given birth to Silence and Sleep."

~Corpus Hermetica, EXC. XXIII. Isis to Horus

Its silly really but like the markings around my eyes I see meaning in it. Tonight the moon is just a bare sliver in the sky, but I think about it.

Part of having a home that was entirely her own that Trivii treasured most was the solitude when she wanted it and the energy that filled it from rafter to floorboards she was grateful. But there was a day meant for Thanksgiving where prayers we said and with them a blessing with good friends and laughter Thanks were said, that they could all be together.

On this day and this day alone, her hearth was empty and her kitchen was quiet. While the homes of others were bursting at the seams, it was just the cat girl and Carnelian... Give or take a Pixie or two.

Wrapped in a blanket she sipped her tea and watched the fog roll in beyond her window and knew with every bit of her soul that her family was out there, with no-one to protect them. Subject to the Mistresses wrath, extending a hand she flexed out her claws and watched the lightning arc from one finger to the next.

One day.. One day she would free them. Curling her claws into her palm, blood pooled as she renewed her vow, like she had every year on this day since she had fled. One day she would act, one day she would be passive no more. Extending her fingers again she breathed, sending her will out to the universe.

Ever the silent observer, Nell hovered in the background. This woman was different from the mother she knew.

Eftemie
It did not take her long to find the tea-house. The place bustled with activity but not so much that she had to wait on a table to one side and slightly away from the door. It was getting colder out and Jasa was wearing a fleece jacket, bluish violet in color but with tiny fall leaves strewn in various sizes falling across the shoulders and down the back.

Sitting down, she waited as the waitress handed her a menu. Ordering a pot of tea, she said, "There will be two of us. We will order when she gets here." She knew that Trivii wanted to do an article on this place, but that was up for her friend to say herself.

Glancing around, Jasa took in the decor. A basic oriental tea-house but there was a definite old euro style influence to it. Both had been integrated nicely and in fact complimented one another with rich wood and porcelain.

Rukurai was in her pocket as she took off her jacket. For the most part he was curled up inside trying to remain warm. As she removed her jacket, he began to stir slightly, a few tendrils sliding upwards to top of the pocket on her sweater. He was barely noticeable and slid back downwards as the door was opened and a bit of cool air crossed the room passing over those nearest.

Jasa snickered feeling a bit of annoyance from him. She had known he would be that way when she laughed. It did not seem that long ago she had found him but she was getting to know him very well. He did not like her to be amused at him, but liked it turned around to his advantage. Sometimes she was sure he was a spoiled petulant child, but there had been no attempt at changing and she still had not gotten into the shop that Trivii had mentioned to find out more about him. The girl was beginning to wonder if it really mattered. They were both happy together so why upset the barrel of apples without necessity.

Trivii`
Trivii was a ball of every, up since well before sunrise and aura of accomplishment settled around her. Nell tucked carefully inside the over-sized cream colored cable-knit sweater, steel grey slacks and polished black ankle boots finished off the business casual appearance, neat leather gloves protecting her hands she hurried along the streets, her hair finding its way free of its combs.

There was a bite to the air that hinted at change. And she was running late, a quick glance at her watch confirmed as she pressed against the door of the tea house and pushed in. She scanned and heaved a relieved sigh when she spotted Jasa was just giving her order to the waitress. Placing a hand firmly over where Nell was settled she smiled and purred her greeting.

"Jasa!" Moving up on the table she settled across from her new friend. "It has been an amazing day, I'm sorry I'm running behind." Glancing at the waitress she smiled and locked sparkling eyes on her companion. "How have you been?"

Eftemie
Glancing up, Jasa smiled widely as she saw Trivii coming her way. "Triv, right on time. I just ordered something to drink for us since I wanted to wait on you before I ordered food. And busy. This time of year is always like that. Lots of potted plants getting sent out. As well as one big order for poinsettias for a solstice party of some sort. They said they plan to give the plants away as gifts."

Laughing, she shoved her hair back from her eyes, at least the one strand that was always slipping free and falling forwards as if it had a mind of its own. "I took the rest of the day off." She patted her shirt pocket with a slight smirk. "Ruku is not pleased at all by being out in the cold. So what are you doing for the holidays?"

Glancing at the waitress who had returned with the teapot and cups, Jasa gave her an order for food and then turned back to Triv. Hot and sour soup with shrimp lo mein sounded really good and the smells from the kitchen were amazing to her nose.

"I'm rather annoyed at my parents. They've decided to go away for the holidays to visit other family they've not seen in awhile. But I'm not telling them that at work. I'll get stuck working last minute." she commented as she poured each of them a cup of tea. She was always happy to see Trivii and she was sure Nell was tucked away somewhere unseen. Just like Ruku.

Trivii`
Relieved, Trivii grinned settling back and removing her gloves wrapped long fingered hands around the small bowl like cup. The scent was intoxicating and floral, somehow not surprisingly, jasmine or a house blend she guessed, sipping without sweetening as Jasa ran down.

It was nice having a friend, especially such a kindred spirit.

"Do you want the truth? Or the polished version?" Noting the slight arch of Jasa's brow she grinned.

"I haven't made plans for the holidays, its my first Solstice in the new house, I was thinking of decorating, hanging wreaths.... buying poinsettias...." She grinned broader, glancing at the menu and deciding vaguely.... before addressing the waitress with her order for a spicy szechuan beef, and waiting for the waitress to depart.

"I have a small problem though and I don't want you to think I'm insane." Digging out a small note pad she made some minor notes on the tea and atmosphere, locking eyes with Jasa, "I don't think you'll have a problem helping me but I don't know how to ask."

Eftemie
Raising an eyebrow, she watched Trivii for a long moment. Then her lips twitched in amusement as she continued to watch her friend. Finally laughing lightly, Jasa asked, "So you were trying to figure out how to ask me to help over the holidays. Well, it appears I'm all yours since they will be gone. What do you need and when?"

Then she added in amusement after sipping the tea, "It won't take long to pack up a few clothes and Ruku and get there. When do you want us? And the sooner you get the stuff bought the better. There won't be much around in less than a week. I know the holidays are a few weeks away but any later than now to order or buy and you will take whatever is left."

As she thought about it, Jasa decided that perhaps a holiday in the country was just what she needed. Trivii was just far enough out to be alone but close enough to get whatever she wanted. Maybe she would have to look into buying some small cottage somewhere and dressing it up in plants to suit herself.

Trivii`
Grinning and relieved Trivii took a long sip of her tea. "Feel free to move out whenever you like, this afternoon even, I have plenty of room... I wanted to go ultra traditional, just like the farmhouse itself... Antebellum. But it won't be as easy as you think, and this is why I really didn't know how to ask."

Keeping her hands occupied she straightened her napkin in her lap. "I have pests... not like cockroaches or mice though, a small army of Pixies took up residence last winter and this last spring I had a moth prince... err Faery move in too. Its terrible, they break things, make noise, freeze rooms, put on light shows."

Taking another sip of tea she continued, "Helping me would be a full time job for you, but if your game and don't mind we can start shopping after tea. I was just given an advance on a novella so the budget won't be worth worrying about."

Eftemie
"Antebellum... You really are going all out..." Jasa winced slightly. "but it suits the farm well. You will want to figure out where you want the garlands and then measure those spaces to get an idea of how much you need. And of course red bows and wreaths to add for the outside. I mean.. are you decorating just for yourself or for something more?"

Jasa frowned slightly as she tried to calculate exactly what Trivii was up to. "Are you just decorating or planning a party also? If a party, then a costume ball circa that era would be rather interesting. But you would want to get that planned and invitations out. If it's simply for you, then none of that matters."

The waitress carried their food out, placing the plates before them. Turning around, she took the fresh teapot from the waitress with her, exchanging it for the cooling one on the table. Smiling at both, she moved away, disappearing in the kitchen.

"I think Ruku and I should come this afternoon. With two of us measuring and deciding it will be much easier to figure out what you need and where to find it. There is one company we use that we could go see directly if it is a certain amount. They will give you a discount depending on the size of the order for wreaths and garlands and even deliver it to your doorstep. For a bit extra you could hire one of the kids from the nursery to help put up the garlands."

Trivii`
Smiling at the waitress, she took one last sip of her cooling tea, laughing and relieved, Trivii nodded. "Starting today would be great." Breaking apart chop sticks she began pulling the tiny peppers out of her meal and setting them aside.

"I want lots of ribbon, I'm not too fond of garland, so just the stairs and front porch. As many velvet bows as we can manage, and all white lights..."

Pausing she thought about it a moment.

"While I have wanted to host a party ever since I finished renovating, I have plans to attend someone else's this year... No, I think the decorating would be just for me, and maybe a stray friend or two."

Regaining her natural energy, Triv eyed her friend, "You sure jumped on the idea of helping me, you really don't want to be stuck working over the holiday do you?"

Eftemie
Making a mental note of what Triv said she wanted, Jasa began to eat. A frown crossed her face at the thought of working at the nursery. "No. I mean, I love the nursery and such but I've worked the last few years during the holidays heading to my parents' house last minute. If I'm at home, they will call."

"I don't plan to be home." she smirked, then shrugged. "I know it's sort of selfish but even I need a break from there sometimes. Besides, it will be more fun to help you. And Nell and Ruku have a chance to be around each other a bit. I've still not had time to head to the shop that you told me about either to find out more about him. Hopefully after the holidays I will."

"I can still come back to town to water my plants until we are finished but no-one will even know I'm here this way, and I have all my holiday gifts bought and wrapped already." Turning her attention back to her food, she smiled. "This is really good. I might have to eat here more often."

Ruku had remained settled down inside the pocket. He seemed warm and comfortable so Jasa never disturbed him from where he was while she ate. Every so often he did give her a break from chasing him around.

Trivii`
The mildly spicy savory textures and almost sweet taste left on her palate had Trivii's eyes rolling in bliss with her first bite. It couldn't have been better if she had been sitting at a table in a restaurant located in Asia rather than the Asian themed.

Oh she definitely wanted to write this place up for the locals, it was new enough that not everyone had eaten there. Looking at Jasa she smiled as she saw a similar pleasure on her companions face.

"I would like to let them... Do shadows play?" She smiled almost laughing. "Well as long as you don't mind helping, I have set up large scale events for huge households... But I don't seem to know where to start, I cannot stress enough, the Pixies are a problem."

Finishing off her tea and scooping a small amount of rice onto her plate, she focused on enjoying the meal, checking several times to be sure that Nell hadn't gone to explore.

"Do you think we can go and get some poinsettias and a few wreathes before we measure?"

Dear Diary,

Snow and ice have cooled our minds
Winds have blown our thoughts in kind,
Silent nights have stilled our words
Like the bear, the fox, the toads and birds!

Creativity sleeps evermore, dreaming of ancient lore...
Come to us now, Inspiration, as the sun returns!
With the long nights our souls do yearn,
For the sun as it grows and stirs
The fire in our hearts glows and whirls!

Sneaking was what shadows did best, and Nell though rather brilliantly colored for a Wisp, was still a Shadow. A memory and a bit of a lost soul captured in stone... Not just stone but in her case, Carnelian.

Like a child, mimicking a super spy the little wisp ducked down the hallway while her foster mother worked... who could possibly have fun in front of that glowing screen all day?

In a dance like flourish she pulled herself into a room at the end of the hall, it was little more than a storage room now, but it would be an office soon... whatever that was.

Nell liked the empty rooms, they had personality, like an old friend, even if they didn't talk to her..

What was that?

Another wisp? Approaching it she could see it was brightly colored with swirls of energy just beneath its polished surface, wrapped in shadows, it was just as curious of her as she was of it...

Moving forward she bumped into it and recoiled attempting to taste its aura with her own tendrils of darkness, and yet somehow she was rebuked!

Attempting the approach again she came from the side, and yet this new Wisp pushed her away again...

Greatly offended, Nell gathered up her shadows and ran at the other one, colliding with the new Wisp she felt something, give, and shatter! In the rain of white and silver there were shards on the ground and reflected brilliant red and orange back at her...

She had killed it! Horror struck Nell fled the room.

February 6th, 2010

Dear Diary,

Here's to the past

Let's all think back on what brought us here
This is my grasp on what is real
Don't tell me how I feel
With all that's passed I can't relate
With myself from day to day
why does everything seem so far away
to me

There's no turning back from here
I've got to get away from everyone who's left
Everyone who's left
I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
They said we'd walk away
You'll never make it if you can't speak for yourself
they said we'd fade away

We've all been down this path before
You're trapped in this town
And it wears you down
When we leave today then maybe you'll understand
This constant struggle isn't always in the palm of my hand

There's no turning back from here
I've got to get away from everyone who's left
Everyone who's left
I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
They said we'd walk away
You'll never make it if you can't speak for yourself
they said we'd fade away

This man will stand the test of time
This man will stand the test of time
This man will stand the test of time
This man will stand the test of time

I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
I'll tell the saddest story
Of how we made it through this past year
(Past year, past year...)
They said we'd walk away
You'll never make it if you can't speak for yourself
they said we'd fade away
