The wind blew past Karite as it whisked his hair off his shoulders. Feeling the pain he knew it would come again that cold detatched feeling. Then an image popped into his head but not the one he thought it would be. It was Misses Yuki. The image was the one from class when he was scolded for not controling his emotions. The raw power she executed without letting her emotions pass out was amazing. If he could learn from her it would be amazaing. He would be the most powerful person in the village...one day. Drawing back he striked the tree far out of the safe zone. "Strike that hit."

Karite noticed Yuki on the beach which meant she was going with Maya and Baki to war. She would have to come back though. He had to become strong show the world he was far from a pretender. He was going to be king one day. Whether on the battlefield or in the classroom he would be king of something. Flexing his hand so that he felt the bandages squeeze tightly around his hand he made sure his fist stayed within the six inch range this time. Keeping the image of Misses Yuki pure speed and strength in his mind he punched hopping this would be the blow but it seemed it did not back the same punch as the cold Karite. He knew it would come where he would have to once again close his eyes and let the darkness over come him but he was hoping it wouldn’t be so soon.

Karite did not know what else to do. He knew that joining the darkness was the quickest way to draw upon his strength but was it the best way at this moment. Did Misses Yuki detach herself in order to find strength? Did Maya and Baki join the darkness to find the courage? Did Tanu feel so cold just to be strong? Was that what it took to powerful; to cut oneself off so that you felt nothing but the strength flowing through you? It seemed so barbaric and wrong. Karite could not muster the feeling again but if he don’t find the answer he was looking for quickly it seemed he would have no choice but in the end to accept his fate and once again let the cold darkness over take him and let the silent roar of his own strength flood from its being and surge into the one point he commanded it to be in. Looking at the bandages they were being to become wet with the crimson color of his blood, but that was the least of his problems. He would soon become something he was not a cold detached monster. Clenching the fist the punch made contact with the now smooth surface, but it just wasn’t the same. Hanging his head he looked at the ground. “Looks like I have no other choice but to do it.”

The dark green veil fell around Karite's face. He slowly let his eyes sink to a close as he regretted the path he had just uncovered on his own. It seemed he was not the same bubbly child he had once thought himself to be. It seemed even he had a monster he could not mask. He was no better than the drunken sailors he stole from or the pompous nobles he use to rub elbows with. He was the same no different. The only thing he had that they didn’t was a need to be a shield for those he deemed worthy of protection. As he swirled this thought in his mind like wine being swirled in glass. He breathed in slowly letting the oncoming winds of winter grab a chilled hold on his lungs. He knew that the same flood of power would come and that there was no need to fear it. Letting over take him like a sudden rainfall ripping through the clouds he struck the tree hearing a slight crunch. It had worked unfortunately. Sliding back to the ground feeling the cold down clench onto his back he knew it was over for now. He would never do anything like that again for a long time. Crossing his eyes slightly he looked into the sky with a glazed look. “I wonder what class will be like today. Everyone seems so crazy on this island I won’t be surprised if they make us run on live alligators or something.”

Kore stretched his once still body as he rolled onto his paws in the large tent. He looked towards his sister who seemed content to sleep her young life away. Fine by him he rose and exited the tent. Looking around he was hit with a cold blast of winter winds. Shivering a little he walked towards the boy from last night, Karite. His hair was all messy and the shirt he wore was gone showing some scars on his chest. That was a good sign. He was a fighter and since he was still alive maybe a good one. Looking at his body his hand was now wrapped and the strong smell of blood tinged his nostrils. Something that stood out was the scar on his shoulder. It almost covered half of his arm and the base of his neck. He must have been a good fighter to survive such wounds. Circling around back to the boys face Kore began to lick him till he woke. Kore wanted to stretch some more.

Karite was fast asleep from the cold realization he had discovered. Not worrying about any of the past moments on the island. He seemed at peace for a short while. Feeling something rough and wet scratch across his face he opened his silver dead eyes to the sight of Kore lingering above him. “Hey there little guy. I didn’t know you were up.” Rolling onto his stomach Karite pushed himself up onto his knees. “Well since you’re up and about why don’t we head to the Village for a look around? That’s about the only place I know of in this village besides the school. I would rather not go there until class starts though.” Standing up and stretching hearing the subtle crack of his back and elbows Karite let a massive yawn that sounded more like a roar then anything. Turning on his heels He looked back at Kore and motioned for him to follow.

Shisei continued the easy going run until his body came to a new area. There were no houses in this spot, but just grassland. It’s as if the area had not even been touched by urbanization. The only things in the area that was even a semblance of man being in the vicinity were a few tents. The snake runner did not tread near any of these tents. It was still early and he did not feel like disturbing anyone, or having them disturb him. His pace kept at the same steady speed as the wind coolly rubbed his face.

The boy’s mind began to wonder just who might be in this area and why it seemed to be the only place that did not get renovated with people. Perhaps it was an old native tribe to the island? Also his mind began to wonder just how much of the island was grassland. From watching the town and the Tenmoki household, the serpent youth believed the rest of the island was like a city. That may have been the wrong assumption. Shisei continued to run through the grassy plain and back onto the road.

Maya crept into her home, feeling more and more relieved to be here amidst the dry air and dusty ground. She sighed, letting her guard drop warily as she eyed the grounds. Karite would probably be in academy, so where were the cubs? Light snores told her Ruha was going to be a lazy lioness unless someone whipped her into shape, but for a cub it was understandable. When she had first arrived she hadn't wandered very far from the grounds, and even then, she'd been forced to go to academy...which she started to skip out on soon afterwards. With a grunt and a hand pressed firmly against her side, Maya pulled a few choice pillows and furs from Shuga's tent and dragged them into her own, falling down on them and promptly falling asleep on them. She was tired, and it was nice to be home...or, at least, in a place where everyone wasn't trying to kill her.

Baki, on the other hand, curled up at the entrance to the girl's tent. His ears were pricked sharply and he was keeping an eye out for anyone that would come by the grounds. Something was bothering him in the back of his furry head, but he snorted and kept his golden eyes scanning the horizon. He thought he caught movement a few hundred feet off - Jhuga? - but after not seeing it anymore, Baki shook his head and assumed he'd been seeing things. Though, you could never be sure out on the flatlands. The grass could pull tricks on the eyes.

Maya awoke, though she was still sleepy and groggy. She hadn't noticed, upon their return, that several members of the village had, in fact, not returned with them at all. Too engrossed in her concern for protecting the village and her partner, Maya pulled open her tent flap and stretched, laying her head on Baki's shoulders and reaching up to scratch his ears. The great cat's soft growls were the closest he would ever be able to get to purring; Maya knew they weren't threatening or bothered growls. She knew every little thing about her partner, and he knew all her flaws and strengths. With a sigh, they both lifted their eyes to the sky and searched out the stars that were beginning to glow. Shuga was gone yet again, and Maya had no idea to where the woman had run off to now. Night was upon them, and yet Maya didn't know what to do. Maybe she'd try to make her own winter clothes? She'd have to hunt a deer tomorrow, with Baki's help...There was just no way at all that she could make the same quality items that, say, Mai would make, but she really had no choice in the matter, and it would be smart to figure it out anyway. Shuga would not be around forever, like she wasn't around now, so Maya had to step it up and start taking on more responsibilities. Baki was probably hungry too, so Maya decided. First thing in the morning, in the very crack of dawn, they would go hunting and Baki could have his fill of meat while she skinned and cured the furs and leathers. That much she knew how to do, though whether she could actually do it on her own...well that was a different story....

Maya, feeling only slightly better but overall very rested, was bored. The night time was supposed to be sleep time, but she'd slept all afternoon, and now what? With a snort, she pulled her limbs from the tent and tugged on Baki, who awoke now after a cat nap. Not tired, for the massive lion had slept on the boat ride back home, he padded after Maya silently as they checked on Ruha once more. The cub still slept, though she mewled fitfully at times and shifted as though having a nightmare. Maya had had many of those nights, and so she stroked the small cub gently before zipping up Shuga's tent. She'd thrown in a few pieces of cured meat so that Ruha could gnaw on something until Maya returned with a fresh hunt, which might be noon tomorrow or even early afternoon. With a sigh, Maya rolled her shoulders and closed her eyes. Extra training before a hunt never hurt anyone, and by the time dawn got around to coming, she'd be ready to go at it with everything she had.

Maya stepped back into the camp easily, watching as the sun stars began to become more pronounced. She smiled slightly - the edge of her lips twitching upwards. She dropped the two limestone wedges on the ground next to the fire pit in the center of the grounds, and picked up a piece of flint and a piece of iron pyrite, striking them together in such a way that the kindling that the girl had made a habit of leaving in the fire pit caught a spark, the wood shavings curling and blowing smoke. With practiced ease, Maya blew on the flame, feeding it and adding larger pieces of wood so that the fire would continue to consume. She needed to warm up the water that she would use to mix the limestone with. Now, while that was getting ready, she had other things to do. While she did her things, Baki stretched himself out a few feet away, his stomach towards the fire to catch its warmth. The winter nights were ones that he had grown accustomed to, though they still irritated him.

With a oblong, dark rock in hand, Maya shifted the limestone blocks onto an older, very worn leather that Shuga kept around pretty much as a rag for whenever it was needed. Sizing up the limestone, Maya took a quick strike and was satisfied when the limestone crumbled - though it was only a little bit. With a small nod to herself, she glanced over at Baki, the edges of her lips twitching up again, and turned back to her work. She hammered away with the rock in her hand, careful not to mash any of her fingers as the limestone wedge began to deteriorate into the tiny, crumb-like pieces that would dissolve much easier and much faster in the warm water she would have to put to boil soon. Rolling her shoulders, she realized that Shuga was probably strong because of all the furs and leathers the woman had made for her tent. Crushing limestone was actually pretty hard work, considering Maya's size and the size of the limestone wedge.

Speaking of warm water, Maya stood and made sure she was stone-free. Looking around the camp, she saw the old barrel lying on its side. A snort escaped her as she realized Jhuga had probably been around lately. The old lion didn't fit in the barrel, but he slept with his head inside of it anyway. Maya didn't know why the old lion was so quirky, but he'd never picked a fight with Baki, and seemed to be willing to let Baki take over as head of the pride, since Jhuga was getting old. With a soft look in her eyes, Maya dragged the barrel over to the side of the fire, standing it and then lifting the already crushed limestone into it. It lay like a fine layer of sand at the bottom of the barrel, and Maya knew almost immediately that she'd gotten the right amount of stone. With the oblong stone in hand again, Maya sat and hammered at the second limestone wedge, her thoughts elsewhere as the steady tap-tap-tap of the stones hitting each other created a soothing rhythm in the silence of the night. The crackle of the fire only added to the 'noise', though Maya was lost in thought. Where...?

Where...was the pot that Shuga used to warm the water from the small creek that ran through the nearby trees? Maya took a quick look around the camp again. Mostly surrounded by trees, the closest tree was actually only eight feet off, and that was the closest edge. The far edge of the Tategami lands lay quite a ways away - the round area that was filled with tall, golden grass, seemed to go on forever in Maya's eyes. Technically the whole area was surrounded by trees, but the northern side of the grounds opened up to an area that expanded farther than the gates of the village. They reached all the way up to the arboretum, where...Tuhai used to train her. Her squad. And now? Now Aya and Kana were gone, the dynamic duo once again taking off. Maya growled, her eyes narrowing. She didn't need a team anyway. She'd go on missions alone if she had to...oh, there. The pot was hanging from a tree. Distracted by the fact that she had to go get water and fill the barrel, Maya trotted over to the creek and filled the pot, holding it by the iron-wrought, leather wrapped handles on either side. The pot was about six inches deep and had a diameter of seven and a half, so it was a pretty large pot. With a smile, Maya brought it back to the fireside almost completely full, and place it on the ground next to the fire. Dipping her hands into the icy water, she wrapped her hands in another scrap of leather (had Kore been chewing through these!?) and grabbed one of eight large stones that had been in the fire. Hissing, she dropped them in the water, and then blew on her hands. Damn... With a sigh, she lifted the second crushed limestone and let the powder settle at the bottom of the barrel. It took four pots to fill the barrel...and she needed...

She needed a stick to stir with. Maya went and found said stick, the one that Shuga usually used...Maya began to grow upset, knowing that Shuga was gone again looking for god knew what. Her aunt had the tendency to go and look for some of the most inane things, never understanding that Maya wanted her here, at home...and in disgust, Maya remembered the days when she had proclaimed that this tiny island village would never be home. Of course, that had been before Shuga had presented her with a responsibility, with a partner that even now made Maya grateful for having come here. Looking at Baki, Maya's smile was almost reminiscent. Shaking her head again, for she was beginning to think of more and more things lately that were causing her to grow angry, Maya put the stick in the barrel, tracing a funky design in the dry white powder that lay in its base. Turning, she tested the water in the pot - it was boiling! Wincing as she burned her finger, she slowly poured the hot water into the barrel and repeated the process of collecting water and heating it with a stone three more times.
