The whole of the RX-78' structural skeleton and armor was made from gundarium. Unfortunately Amuro's response time was too fast for the Gundam's structure to handle, therefor a scientist from Jaburo came up with a process to coat the Gundam's joints in a magnetic coating that would counteract the effects of friction on the joints and allow for quicker movement.
