acebirchy "Wait? I have to actually go there to buy it," Laurence asked, pretending to be confused. But it didn't last as he broke out laughing. He jogged after her, his usually gelled hair bouncing slightly with each step. hHe caught up to her and began to pant. "God you walk fast," he smiled playfully.
Laurence went ahead, and he was now the one looking over his shoulder at her. When they approached the counter, he leaned casually against it, sifting through his wallet and pulling out a twenty. "I'll take a grande caramel frappuchino. How 'bout you Serena?" She laughed and shook her head. "Well, yes, I would assume you have to go there and buy it... I wasn't aware of Starbucks' door-to-door service!" she teased, and laughed again, a large smile on her face. For once, in the month that followed Devon's death, Serena was laughing and having a good time... And she felt great about it all. "Nah, I don't walk fast... You're just a bit too slow..." she teased yet again, and flashed another smile, accompanied with a wink, over his way.
Serena quickened her pace, catching up to him. For a moment, she really did feel as if she were with Devon again, and she luckily caught her movements before she wrapped her arms around him. Indeed, it would have been quite embarrassing if she had accidentally done it. "Hmmm..." she sounded, pondering for a moment before smiling. "I'll take a tall, iced peppermint mocha," she said with a smile. She was glad they sold peppermint mochas other than on Christmas only... But, she figured only a few people actually knew that.
She glanced up at Laurence with a weak smile. "I can pay for myself if you want," she said with a small laugh.

"If you give me a moment, I can try to figure it out." Lantis went to the corner that she'd indicated and looked at the machine. It was a new model, no wonder she had trouble working this. It seemed that with each new model you had to become smarter, and smarter than the machine. Lantis flipped a switch here, and pressed a button there trying to get a reaction. "I guess you don't drink coffee much." He joked. "I remember I had a coffee machine that was hard as hell to work but~ Ah! There we go!" The red light came on and the coffee maker made a watery churning noise as it came to life. "Volia, coffee, and tea with muffins and sweet cakes. You name it I can get it." He made the gestures as if he were a fancy waiter. He looked about with a light smile. "You know, if you really wanted to, you could turn this place into a quaint little cafe, it certainly has the mood and looks to attract people. You'd make a cute waitress that everyone would come for just to serve them tea..." He tried to make the compliment obvious.

Making sure that she had a hold of Marisol, Nikki looked over at him, an undefinable emotion crossing over her features, before she shrugged and focused on walking. "I've had to learn how to get out of places fast, though sometime it doesn't always help..." Not realizing that she had said that last bit outloud, she grinned over at him. "Does that answer your question?" Letting go of one of Marisols ankles for a minute, Nikki brushed a strand of hair out of her face, before carefully grasping the limb again. Nikki had always had to figure out how to get away from her father and a lot of the times, even though she was fast, she had not been able to get away in time. Shaking away those thoughts, she looked back over at him.

"What? Trying to avoid your boyfriend or something?" Gabriel said with a laugh. Just then, they reached the Jack in the Box. It was one of the remodeled ones with the more contemporary style. He held open the door for Nikki and Marisol, though it seemed silly in such a casual place as a fast food joint. "Ladies first." It was something that Melissa had always wanted from him. 'I love it when a guy opens the door for you, when they hold an umbrella for you, and even when they just make the effort to compliment you on an ordinary day.' It was a moment before he realized he'd spaced out and Nikki had already walked into the 'restaurant'.

Turning to look at him, Rae blushed deeply with a shy smile at his comment about her being cute opening her mouth to say something she couldn't think of anything that wouldn't make her look stupid and she blushed deeper. Tripping over her words for a second Rae said the first thing that came to mind, "Do you really think I could make this a cafe?" Turning away from him she realized she had been staring at him again. As the coffee trickled down into twin cups she opened the fridge revealing not much actually food but a wide assortment of baked goods, "Umm. I was wondering if you were hungry. When I get upset I tend to start baking and I can't eat all this by myself or even if I had a large party I think there would be left overs. I was going to take it down to the homeless shelter but I thought I should ask..." Trailing off with her words she had been speaking quickly and felt like she was babbling.
Though she wasn't horrible with people she had been through so much and it was hard trying to hide who you were and your real life. Afraid you would scare someone away with your past Rae thought it would be nice to even have a friend someone to talk to. Even if it couldn't be real. Experience had taught her knowing others only led to more tears.
Running a hand through her hair she pushed her past to the side for a moment and a real smile shown through as she shook her head sighing, "Well I feel like an idiot right now." she said with a laugh, "I have this horrible habit of babbling at times." A small ray of her old confidence and hope cut through the darkness of life. Even just having Lantis in the home made it seem like there was more life in it like the death clung a little less.

Lantis tilted his head curiously. "I don't know, it's really up to you, but if you're the only one here, this house would start to get a little lonely. I think the atmosphere would make it a great attraction, and you've already got the startings of a great cafe. Coffee, baked goods? If it were me, I'd come here every day." He nodded his thanks as he accepted the offered coffee to him before continuing. "And since baked goods don't stay good for long, you can take the left overs to the homeless." He smiled thinking of it, if the house kept it's setting, it would a really quaint cafe, give people the luxury of a fancy tea party or simply a place to sit and get lost in their thoughts. When he thought of the house in that sense, it didn't seem so scary. Lantis looked to Rae then and laughed when she spoke about babbling. The smile on her lips was perhaps the first real smile he'd seen from her. It was stunning as it was brilliant. "...And when you smile like that, it makes me certain that the customers will continue to come..." He paused again thoughtful and took a sip of his tea before he added quite casually; "And I think it's cute when you babble. No one likes a silent waitress you know? I'm certainly enjoying myself right now!" He meant that too. It was funny, he couldn't remember the last time he had so much fun with anyone. But his eyes kept twitching back to his hands as though to make certain that no one else could see. Of course they were clean, as they had been for years. But only Lantis could see their secret.
And he remembered why he stayed away from everyone, because there was the off chance that someone else would see the blood too. And then...they would hate him because they knew what he was capable of doing. His eyes dimmed somewhat, but he forced himself to cast it aside remembering what his doctors said about his 'condition'. The smile was back on as he began to talk to Rae more. "So where did you used to live after you left this place? You said you were just coming back right?"

Rae smiled back to him as he talked about the cafe idea and it really seemed quite possible. With the living room the way it was all she had to do was push back the sofa and coffee table opening it up to add some more chairs and tables making her wonder what was in the basement. Her parents had several sets of furniture that they changed out every two years. It had seemed stupid to her at the time but now it seemed like it would be useful. Especially since the living room connected to the dining room. Taking two coffee cakes out of the fridge she cut herself a slice of the cherry one gesturing to him if he wanted cherry or blueberry as she pulled some white china plates from the cabinet that had dragons around the edges then grabbed two forks. "I hat it when waitresses do that. Just stand there like statues. It kinda creeps me out." Rae laughed lightly as he said it was cute when she babbled and he would come everyday, "You know if this idea gets off the ground I might hold you to that. I will expect you to be my first customer." Watching Lantis she noticed how his eyes kept shifting to his hands as his smile faltered and it worried her. With a sudden urge to ask him what was wrong and try to comfort him. Though that was ridiculous she couldn't even help herself. At his next question she hesitated trying to think of a way to make it natural, "Oh I just needed to get away so I've been around. Started out in Missouri," I was in Atlanta for about a month, then Vegas called with a job offer, then I don't remember. I have been bouncing around the country since I was 16."
What she didn't want to admit to was more than once she had been living on the streets. She had been a running away her whole life from the foster home and what hurt the most is it ussually took about 3 months before they noticed she was missing. Eventually she was let to just run they had forgotten her for the last time. Growing uncomfortable at how close to what really happened it was getting, "So what about you? Have you always been here? Or did you get any traveling in along the way?"

"Or something," she replied, no amusement in her voice. When he pulled the door open for her, she hesitated for only a moment before stepping in front of him and into the cold 'restaurant.' Nikki had never really liked having people behind her because that meant that she couldn't see what they were doing, if they were about to attack her. And she hated her father for instilling that kind of attitude in her, hated him for what he did to her. When she had children, she swore that she would never lay a hand on them.
When Gabriel was beside her again, she easily lifted the child from her shoulders and set her on the ground, not letting go until she was sure that Marisol was steady. Smiling, Nikki was reminded of why she had chosen to be a kindergarden teacher. At first it was because she had feared that she would hurt children the way that her father had hurt her and Nikki knew that if she didn't face that fear then it would very likely become a reality. After a while and adjusting to the different atmosphere, Nikki had come to realize that she truly enjoyed being surrounded by children. Their innocent view on life was a refreshing view on the way that things really were. Contrary to belief, the children were also very sensible for their age, noticing small things that most adults would never understand.
Grinning again at the little girl, she nodded to the menu. "So what do you want? Tell me and I'll get it while you pick a table." It was one thing she remembered from when she was a child and she was with a friend whose mother took them to places like this; being able to pick where you say was always the most fun thing to do, besides the play ground that is. But Nikki wasn't sure if Jack in the Box had a playground, so she settled for her statement, before turning to Gabriel again. "What about you? Not that many guys would stop to hold the door open for a woman anymore."

"Alas, you've found me out. A time traveler from the future came to the Middle Ages, took me out of the castle where I was a knight, and then dumped me into this strange time of yours," Gabriel said. The truth was, of course, that Melissa had prodded him into becoming a gentleman. It was a good idea, he had to admit. It felt nice to do something for someone else every now and then. He knew this, because no one had been very nice to him in three years. Nikki, Marisol, and Lucy excepted.
Marisol laughed at Gabriel before telling Nikki what she wanted. "I want a cheeseburger and curly fries, and a milkshake!" she said happily.
"Just laying on the calories, aren't you Marisol?" Gabriel asked.
"Huh?"
He laughed. "Never mind. I'll take the same thing - except the fries. We can share a medium."

He recieved his change and slid it into the wallet. The wallet went back into Laurence's duffel bag just as the song Sorry by Buckcherry began to play. Digging through his bag, the soccer player managed to uncover his iPhone, the touch screen lighting up. It read one missed call from an "Unknown" number. But it wasn't unknown to him.
Laurence pretended as if that caller had been nothing but a wrong number. He smiled, taking the completed drinks. Handing Serena her drink, Laurence smiled as he stuck the green straw into the mountain of whip cream. He took a sip. "So, shall we stay here and drink, or would you prefer to go home and change out of your wet clothing?"

She grinned at his comment, a retort immediatly coming to mind. "Well then, it looks like you've already saved your damsel in distress." Grinning again, she carefully listened as Marisol spouted off her order, followed closely by Gabriel's comment. Shaking her head, she walked forward to the counter and placed the order, getting nothing but a bottle of water for herself. When the order came a few minutes later, she picked it up and walked over to the table that the little girl had picked and took the seat closest to the window. "There you go. Eat up." Nikki glanced out the window at all the passing cars and pedestrians, wondering if any of them had pasts as messed up as hers.

Serena thought on it a moment, shivering slightly. "That was a good song... I kind of want to listen to it now," she said with a laugh as she nodded her head toward the door. "Let's go back to my place... I have admit... Dry clothes do sound rather appealing to me at the moment," she said as she walked toward the door, the green tip of the straw in her mouth as she sipped the drink silently, her head swimming with millions of thoughts.
What was she doing? Was this betraying Devon's love for her? Betraying the child that was growing in her stomach? She shook her head. her eyes towards the gray pavement, a solemn look on her face. Was she doing the right thing? Devon would want her to be happy... Not mope around over him, right? She sighed, looking up at Laurence. "My flat is just around the block," she said with a smile. Hopefully, it was somewhat tidy....

Laurence only smiled at her comment. The government was constantly checking up on him, hoping to find some hint of the mob's appearance. After the fifteenth call, Laurence stopped answering. And they stopped calling.
"Sounds like a plan." He tried not to think about it as he followed Serena. It the past now, right he asked himself. He pulled down his jersey with a tug, hoping to distract his mind with something else.

"You're not getting anything?" Gabriel asked. Melissa never wanted to get anything either. It was always 'too much fat' or 'too much sugar' or 'too much sodium'. "Did you have lunch already, or do you not have the stomach for fast food? I can't say I blame you. Though I've had worse." He stared into his milkshake, playing with the straw rather than drinking. He had had worse. Prison didn't exactly have a gourmet restaurant. Though he supposed some had it worse. He glanced at Marisol. The little girl was happily crunching on their curly fries. As usual, not a care in the world. As usual, Gabriel was envious.

Once agian, Lantis felt the questions treading dangerously close. With great trepidation, the young man proceeded with the attitude of one who grew up a most natural life.
Most natural...
Lantis smiled, but not because he felt particularly happy, but because he knew it was what one did when answering a personal question like that. His body went through all the motions, but the feelings never touched his eyes. "Wow, compared to you, my life sounds boring! Yeah, I've been around, but not to all the places you have! I like to travle, but not so much in these recent years. After all was said and done, I found there really is no place like home. I mean you know?" Though he played his part perfectly, his body hid it's nervous habits. Or perhaps they were something he did to try to calm himself? "But that's enough about me, I want to hear more about you. I mean what made you want to travel? What did you do for a living?"
Perhaps he was being too obvious directing the questions back at her, but Lantis wanted to make an aggressive effort to keep himself, his tracks, his past, well hidden. The blood still wouldn't come off, and he feared they never would. But if he could hide then, maybe one day he'd forget and everything would be okay?
