The thing is, the Ancients were incurably cocky. They never expected to leave. Also, they did leave instructions on the ascension sanctuary, but no one could read them.

if you count this place is to ascend as instructions.
remember at the end sheapard was given the chance to ascend with the others and he did nothing. no actual praying while everyone else devoted their entire lives to worship and praying

yeah, why was he offered easy ascension?
daniel got an easy way up but he had oma.

he hadn't been through the steps leading up to ascension, such as devouting your life to praying. or in daniel's case having oma help him. they keep saying there is no easy path to ascension. so why was he even offered the chance to ascend in the first place?
