Nicholette bowed her head trying to hide her blushing from Talon and Rafaelle. Her play her song to the Weyrleaders? No, that would never happen...Even if she did finish it with the lyrics.

"M-my music isn't all that... that great... I cause people to cry when they hear it. The dragons and firelizards croon sadly to the song... I guess they don't like it either..." she whispered softly. She held her flute again before placing it back into her bag. She then looked back up after her blushing was over.

"If one of us gets impressed or visa versa, will you two promise to keep in touch with me too?" She asked softly giving them a shy smile.

"That would explain Tarlith's recent smugness." Kalya laughed slightly and she glanced over towards her weyrmate. "Well then, Lemurrin, I feel honoured to be the one to hear about it first." Kalya looked seriously into his eyes before smiling slightly again. "I guess this just proves it... you have to be a dragonrider... and the dragon that chooses you has to be that one." She points to a mottled green/gray one that was closest to the crowd with a chuckle. "OK, so I am not the one to be guessing which egg will hold your partner. But I get the feeling I'll be calling you L'murrin soon."

A slow smile spread across the harper's face. "It actually feels good to tell someone. At first I thought I was going crazy or something, before I figured out it was dragons I heard in my head." Lemurrin gazed out across the sands at the eggs, wondering what each egg held. "L'murrin? Hm. I think I like L'mur better." He nodded and his two fire lizards chirped their approval.

Nestren frowned at this. The parents refused to let the boy go and a hatchling died. "It sounds like a part of your brother died when he could not be with his dragon-mate. I heard that being Impressed by a dragon is so life changing that if either partner dies..."

He did not continue his sentence. "Tis a shame, that they allowed themselves to be ruled by traditions. Traditions need to change and have to change with the times."

This was probably the most serious he had ever been.

Kirana nodded, sighing softly, "It's part of why I'm happy when I'm away from the Hall. Most people there are so rigid."

Several more times the queen's body tensed and relaxed, indicating the number of eggs was rising but each time and egg was set upon the hot sand Ariath would adjust her position ever so slightly to make sure it remained hidden from all eyes. No matter how much Ariath's rider prodded for her to reveal the eggs, the mighty queen would not have it. She wanted her first clutch to be a surprise to all.

--------------------------

Ephia smiled as her eyes flitted over her queen. "Oh yes, she enjoys keeping us in suspense. Sometimes I wonder where she got her stubborness from and her joy of torturing people." A chuckle escaped her lips.

Turning green eyes from the proud figure of Tallith and the ever protective Ariath, Ephia's eyes met L'cians. A wry smile snaked across her face as he questioned her day schedule. "Why, I had meant to come see you today." She grinned. "But Ariath decided to play Goddess and bring us together herself."

Ephia sighed softly and allowed herself to lean against L'cian ever so lightly but the short time of bodily contact was quickly disturbed by the sudden appearance of a little green who found Ephia the perfect perch. Moving away from L'cian so as not to crowd the flit Ephia raised a hand and gently scratched the tiny green under her chin. "Now, who do you belong to?" She smiled softly but she had little time to enjoy the company of the green when a jealous blue appeared beside L'cian and perched on the Weyrleader's shoulder chirping angerily at his owner and the intruding green.

"Fugue! You do know how to cause a ruckus now don't you." Ephia reached over the the blue flit and gently scratched him as well which seemed to calm him down somewhat, but glares were still being sent to the green.

-----------------------------

Xilias rubbed his temples as the hatching proceeded and, though it was quite exciting to watch the process, he was beginning to bore. Eyes drifted from the large gold situated on the sands to those watching the proceedings. Blue orbs stopped on a group of people who looked quite animated. Rising frm his seat he proceeded down to where they sat. A good conversation seemed to be just the thing to pass the time away.

Approaching the group he noticed one girl had an instrument which looked much like a flit. Grinning he sat down just behind the girl called Rafaelle. "Hello, I notice you all seemed to be passing the time rather well so I thought I would join you. If you don't mind that is."

"My father wanted me to wed some girl who was the daughter of another holder he knew since childhood. She was not bad looking, younger than me. And I would have helped to increase my family's lands. I am not the oldest, so I would not have inherited. I was almost interested in becoming a herder or something..."

Covering his eyes, he watched the queen as she obviously was laying some more eggs. "She seems to be putting on a show for us today."

Verde crooned happily at the attention, giving only a sidelong glance towards the blue, snorting at him distastefully before turning her head towards the crowd, trying her best to indicate her feelings to someone she'd just met. Her owner was in the crowd and had something important to discuss.

---

Kirana smiled and chuckled, glancing over at the queen, "She seems like she's doing her best to keep them all hidden to me. But I wouldn't blame her. There's so many expections and musing at this clutch...quite a few bets made as well just after the flight if I remember correctly," She said, a bemused expression crossing her face. That seemed so long ago now.

"How long does it take for the Queen to have eggs? Does it happen right away or does it take time? I don't really know too much about dragons except that they are here to fight Thread."

L'cian found himself laughing along with her, realising just how similar Weyrwoman and dragon were. Both filled with a vibrant confidence and stubborn streak that had made her the perfect choice to lead them all into a new generation for the Weyr. Grey eyes once again traced the proud arch of his dragon's neck as he kept a close eye on the crowds. It seemed the brown had calmed a little now, wings only half unfurled and eyes turning more and more attention to Ariath than on the crowds.

Aware suddenly of Ephia's eyes on him he turned his head - distracted from the dragons long enough to find himself locking eyes with her. There was a smile spreading across her face that he had seen before, a recogniseable expression that he couldn't help but smile in reply to. "Ahh I see," he stated, eyes suddenly alight "I have a feeling your queen planned it this way." As she leaned against him L'cian could not help but feel a little guilty at keeping to himself as of late and made a mental note to change this. They definately needed to spend some more time together, become a priority he could not put off.

Your queen wants some attention. Tallith hummed pleasantly through his mind, a hint of amusement underlying the words as he canted his head towards them.
Shh Tallie. L'cian smiled sheepishly, startled from his conversation as he heard the sound of small wings beating and the absence of Ephia against his side. She was tending to a small green firelizard and from her words it was clear that it did not belong to her. Perhaps the little creatures were smart enough to know who she was and that a congratulations was in order. The very prospect caused him to laugh aloud.

They are just over excited.
Perhaps, but then I think just about everyone is dear brown, can you hear the dragons awaiting the news outside?
They wish to spread the news of the clutch size.
It'll be known as soon as your beauty wishes us too.
As it should be. Tallith replied, gleaming blue eyes returning once more to his queen.

Then suddenly L'cian felt a weight pressing gently upon his shoulder, the feeling of small claws trying to gain balance on the material of his clothing.
"Seems this little fellow is wanting some attention too." He laughed amiably, admiring the sleek, blue shape of the miniature dragon. He had never really spent the time to gaze at them close up, the sleekness of their forms and the beautifully crafted wings that seemed so delicate were somewhat enchanting. He could understand why many people adored the little things despite them being not as intelligent as a dragon.

He heard his own brown sigh mentally and shook his head slowly. "If the green is not yours then whose is it I wonder? Tallith was not agreeable with the idea that maybe she had come in order to congratulate you." His eyes sparked with amusement.

However, as he heard himself included in a greeting the Weyrleader turned his attention briefly from Ephia and the troublesome duo, setting eyes upon none other than the Master Weaver.

"Emoraan isn't it?" He spoke, hoping he had put the correct name to the man's face, nodding his thanks. "There have not been many days in which I have felt this proud, it is indeed a nice feeling and one that I shall hold for many turns to come that is for sure." At the mention of thread he allowed himself to become a little mroe serious, a prospect not to be taken lightly.

"No, but I have been meaning to talk with you about that. I should very much like to see the finished result when you have time to show me." He gave the man a kindly smile. "I have heard good things about your work, it is highly complimented. It is an honour to have you working for us here at Rias."

~~~
So many people talking, so many bellows of dragons and now Carella could see the darting shapes of firelizards as they performed pretty acrobatics over the heads of the crowds.
Many of the youngsters were apparently candidates, searched out for this most special event and she briefly tried to put herself in their position. They would be so incredibly excited, the more eggs the more chance that they would impress. It was ashame that not all of the candidates could become riders, that there would always be some who were dissapointed. She sighed and leaned forwards in the chair, hands cupping her chin as she gazed at queen and brown.
Carella had never truly considered the prospect of becoming a rider herself, being born into a totally different world from that of the great beasts. She had admired them, and had enjoyed everything about living amongst them. Their brassy roars a symbol of power and beauty that could not be flaunted. Rider's were formed in a close-knitt community, all of them enjoying every aspect of dragon life. Clutchings, hatchings, gathers, fighting thread. It was an amazing way to live, not as a simgle entity but as a flock, one part of a much bigger whole.
She sighed, eyes glazing over as she let her mind ponder on such things.
As Janista squirmed impatiently in anticipation, a small blue firelizard appeared and landed on her shoulder, crooning jealously. "What, Del? I can't pay attention to you all the time. This is an important event in the Weyr." After a moment of listening to his pitiful cries, she began to scratch him on the head. "There, is that better?" she sighed. "I wish you could go see the eggs and tell me how many there were."
Del the firelizard chirped frantically, his eyes whirling red in horror at the idea. He sent Janista images of crushed Del and a red-eyed Ariath.
"I didn't say you should actually go do it, you silly flit! I don't wanna mess with an angry queen dragon, no sir. I just wish I knew what was going on, that's all."
This seemed to calm Del, and Janista was back to squirming impatiently in silence.
Emoraan gave a slight bow to the Weyrleader. His eyes dancing with the praise, although his face was most somber. "There will be many times to feel proud, young Weyrleader. And yes I may call you young, considering my turns. But, just remember that pride alone can not sustain you."
He looked over the crowd and gave a slight huff. "I shall have the new vests lined as quickly, but as confidently as possible. I will not let you or your weyr down. Though right now, I think it is more Ariath's weyr than anyone else's."
He chuckled at this.
Lemurrin grinned at Tarlith's remark. And would you want to fly a queen? he thought at the blue, daring for the first time to speak to a dragon directly instead of merely overhearing random comments.
Brownie queeped at the harper, as if questioning his judgment in questioning a Large One. The boy scratched the little brown's eyeridges fondly, wondering if Tarlith could actually hear him. Did this work both ways?
"Anyway," he said to Kalya, "I'll be very interested to know the results of this clutch!"
Kirana glanced back towards the sand, noticing Verde standing up on the Weyrwoman's shoulder and aligning her tiny green head in her direction. Kirana glanced back towards Nestren and smiled, "I'm not sure. It varies between queens, I've heard. Some take only a day, others take weeks. Clutch size and fussiness with where and how the eggs are placed probably has something to do with how long it takes."
Nestren nodded. "I hope that this clutch is a big one, Thread is coming soon."
The last part he said in kind of a whisper, afraid to ruin the mood of the occasion. He stared over at the Weyrleaders and then looked away. The other candidates were mulling around and laughing. "I wonder if I will stay in the kitchens, if I do not Impress. I am not good at too much else."
Kirana nodded at the thread comment. She'd had several buzzes around the Hall that according to the Eye in Fort that the Thread would return to Pern in a matter of years, maybe even less, "So I've heard..." She whispered.
Smiling softly, Kirana reached out, settling a hand on Nestren's shoulder, "You've got several good Impression years in you yet. This is only the first of many clutches to come. And I've got a good feeling about you. I'm no Searchdragon, but I am a good judge of people."
