Chapter Seven

Melanie’s P.O.V.


His hands were warm on my arms, and all I wanted to do was to lean into his embrace…
No. Time to come back to reality. I quickly stepped back, not looking at his face, and rubbed my arms where he touched me.
“S-sorry…” I stuttered. I tried to step around him, but he grabbed my wrist.
“Hey-” he started. He then stopped and looked as if he didn’t know what else to say. He shook his head a little, like he was trying to get water out of his ears. He tried again. “Um…” his voice was shaky. My heart beat faster. “I, uh, I saw you at our concert last night. You were with that girl with the super-curly hair, right?” He was talking about Janet. I nodded stupidly. “Yeah. I saw you. You’re really…I mean, your outfit was…er, no, I mean…” He ran a hand through his hair, and all I wanted to do was kiss that hand, calm him down, comfort him. I disgusted myself.
“What’s your name?” he asked. I didn’t want to tell him. I didn’t want to talk to him. I didn’t want to be here. Please, just let me go home and avoid heartbreak.
“M-Melanie.” Damn it. A soft smile touched his lips. Those perfect lips….no. Stop it.
“My name’s Gerard.” He held out a hand, and, like and idiot, I just stared. He reached down, and for the second time that night, grabbed my hand. “Nice to meet you.” He shook my captive hand. My words stuck in my throat. I was paralyzed. He didn’t let go of my hand. “Hey, uh, you wanna get a coffee?” I nodded. Wait, what? Why did I just agree? I just met this guy! I don’t know him! He could be one of those whacked-out rocker dudes hopped up on drugs and alcohol! He could be abusive! Worst of all, he could be a complete a*****e. But his hand was so warm and his eyes were so inviting…
Damn it. We were walking down 42nd street. His eyes were scanning the stores for a coffee shop. While he was preoccupied, I carefully withdrew my hand from his. He didn’t seem to notice; he just stuck his hand in his jacket pocket.
“So, what kind of job do you have?” Why must he keep talking? Every time he spoke, it was like a defibrillator to my heart. A shock went through my entire body.
“I…I work f-for an insurance c-company.”
“Oh yeah? Which one? Are you cold? You’re shivering.” He reached to put his arm around my shoulders, and I flinched and shook my head.
“I’m fine. I work for Blue Cross Blue Shield.”
“Oh.”
I smiled, a little. There wasn’t much you can say to a boring job. I looked away into the street to avoid looking at Gerard. Without warning, he grabbed my arm and pulled me into a crowded coffee shop.
People shoved up against me and pushed me towards the back wall, away from Gerard. I slammed up against the wall, and the panic started to set in. People were yelling all around me, clamoring for their coffee. I couldn’t see anything but strangers, and I was scared. I didn’t want to be in this stupid coffee shop anyway. I just stood against the wall, clenching my hands and squeezing my eyes tight. I didn’t want to be here, I didn’t want to be here, I didn’t want to be here…
“Melanie!” A familiar voice rang throughout the shop. I was sure that I would be able to pick out that voice in a crowded subway station, and I hated myself for it. I opened my dull green eyes to two brilliant hazel ones. There was still some eyeliner left around his eyes, but all other makeup was gone. I found myself scrutinizing every last detail of his face. I saw all of his flaws, all of his perfections, right there on his face. He was scared to death, just like me.
“There you are!” he said, relieved. He handed me a cup and grabbed my other wrist. “Let’s get out of here. Please.” He pulled me towards the door and right out onto the street. “Whew!” he exclaimed. “I’m glad I’m out of there. Whenever I get into a crowded place like that I always get kinda panicked, you know?” I just stared at him.

Oh wow, I must not be very observant cause I didn't even notice. =/ Great update though. =]

I have no excuse for not updating my story cause I've been writing the chapters like crazy because all my friends are obsessed with the story. =]

I don't get many projects. We just work a lot. =/

^_^. Umm, I've been really tired lately, so sorry if it's a while before I update... I don't even know how many of you are reading still...

I'll try. I just don't have a whole lot of time lately.
