"That's okay, I was physically six when I was first born, I have never grown since then," she shrugged not minding it as much as she would have nearly a year ago.
She chuckled a bit at Ulani's comment, she wondered if Ulani knew how much her mother had to deal with this age difference.

"Hmm..." Donovan pretended to think about it, "No, it doesn't really turn my head, because Kara would adopt anyone, and while the time difference really does mess with my head, no more than seeing things change every time I come here and..." he paused, "Kara is twenty-four Ulani, she has a dozen grandchildren."
He shrugged and crossed his arms over his chest.
"No stranger than knowing your future father-in-law is stuck in a sword."

"A dozen, now?" Ulani smiled and reached for two sandwiches, handing one to Adonai and keeping one for herself. "Impressive. You said Elnara spawned as well as Ulrich and I, how many more does she have now? And what race? What name?"
Adonai fidgeted until he was sitting straight on his mother's lap before he started eating, and as he ate he kept a wary eye on Donovan and Cindy.

"Well," Donovan looked thoughtful, "Just one more since the last time you saw her, a kid named Sliverindir," he chuckled, "Elnara provides most of them with seven children, but there are other children who adopted or had children.... well only Yue actually had kids."
If one could even call it that.

"Ah," Ulani nodded. "I haven't met him, so I don't know who he is ..."
She blinked down at Aliya, realizing for the first time that her daughter was still in her night clothes.
"Aliya," she frowned, "you should go get dressed. Come, it's one thing to wear your night clothes to the table if we're the only ones here, but it's not proper with guests."
Aliya frowned back at her mother, though it looked more like a pout. "Well I'm almost done eating anyways," she argued back, "so can't I just wait until after?"
Mother and daughter stared at each other. There was no hostility in their looks - it was nothing more than a battle of wills. It went on for several long moments, until Aliya finally broke eye contact and sighed.
"Okay," she murmured, rubbing her dry eyes. "I'll get dressed." And, still pouting, she left the room.
Ulrich chuckled once Aliya was safely out of earshot. "She gets that from you, you know," he told his wife amusedly.
Ulani reached out and decked him. "That doesn't make it right," she quipped back as he rubbed the back of his head.

Donovan couldn't help but chuckle, it reminded him of his mother in a way, though his mother probably would have or could have done worse. Then again it was his father, so he didn't feel too sorry for the man.
"Don't hit him too hard," he murmured.

"Who, me?" Ulani asked, her face the epitome of innocence. "Never!"
Ulrich chuckled. "Yeah, I'm used to it by now," he assured Donovan. "I'd have to be, after thirty six hundred years."
Adonai reached for another sandwich, but his arms were too short. Instead of crawling to the edge of Ulani's lap, he just kept trying to reach. Still scared of the newcomers, he didn't dare say a word, but instead he strained his arm trying to reach for it.

"I don't think my old man ever got use to mother's violent tendencies, but he had enough grace to run when he did something particuarly upsetting to her," Donovan commented.
He wondered though how the two managed to keep it up after all these centuries. There was a curious thought.

Cindy reached over for a sandwich and then standing slightly on her chair for she was still kind of short she reached out to give it to Adonai. Even though she knew that child was still somewhat frightened of her.

"I haven't had to run from her since we were children," Ulrich grinned. "Trust me, she's not nearly that violent anymore. When we were growing up, any time I had a bloody nose or a broken bone, more often than not it was thanks to her."
"You do realize," Ulani retorted, "that you gave as good as you got?"
"I don't think so," Ulrich grinned. "I think your mother would have murdered me if I'd ever broken one of your bones." Not literally of course, but it was still a thought.
"But Ulrich is right," Ulani grinned, looking back at Donovan. "I have changed ... now I'm only really violent to people who threaten my family."
Aliya returned just then wearing a light brown sleeveless shirt and matching pants with green embroidery down the side. Her long golden hair was up in a high ponytail now, neatly away from her face. Without a word, she hopped back into her chair and started eating again.
Adonai stared at Cindy for a moment as if expecting her to take the sandwich back again, then reached forward tentatively to take it from her. Once it was safely in his hand, he curled up in a ball once more in his mother's lap, his eyes still on Cindy, his gaze curious now instead of frightened.

Donovan smirked at that, only because he was pretty sure that was true, he had already heard of Ulani's temper, though he had been ignoring it at the time for Kara's well being.
"A bit of violence directed at the right thing is always welcomed," he replied.

Cindy then reached to take a sandwich from the plate for herself and began nibbling on it. She was quite curious about these people her mother talked about sometimes. Kara had been quite fond of staying with Ulrich and Ulani, they were good people.
Well that and Kara seemed amused by them and now Cindy knew why.

"Indeed it is," Ulani agreed. "I held back once - only once - when trying to get rid of a group of humans ... never again. Never."
That had been the time Terexin was killed. She and Ulrich had gone over the events of that day many times together, and each time Ulrich blamed himself for not being able to protect his son - but Ulani knew, if she hadn't been lenient on that particular group of men, believed their word that they would leave the area permanently, without attacking anyone ... their son would still be alive.
Ulrich seemed to read his wife's thoughts, for he reached over and put one hand on her shoulder to comfort her. "At any rate," he smiled at Donovan, "things have gotten a lot better lately ... thanks to you."
Aliya finished eating quickly (it almost seemed as if she had inhaled her food) and hopped off her chair again. "I'm going to go look for arrow-wood!" she called over her shoulder as she disappeared out the door. "I'll be home for lunch!" And with that she was gone.
Adonai stared at the doorway after she had disappeared, then waved at the empty space. Then he turned back to Cindy and resumed his watch of her.

Cindy tilted her head a bit curiously as Aliya ran off, "What is arrow-wood?"
She had never heard of it, and kept trying to imagine what kind of wood it was. Unfortunately the words brought a very odd imagine to mind.

"Either birch, willow, or gopher wood," Ulrich replied with a grin, "though ash when we can get it is better ... basically any wood that's strong and straight that can be made into arrows. Lately she's been trying to make her own bow and arrows, apparently Fletcher taught her how ... so she's been off nearly every day searching for the right wood."
"As long as she doesn't find any," Ulani added, "we don't have to worry. Really we don't have the right trees here in the valley, and she's not allowed outside of the valley without us. If she does end up finding any, we know she's gone where she's not allowed to, and then we'll have to worry."
Adonai was still staring at Cindy as he munched on his sandwich, his dark eyes blinking at her unabashedly. After a while, he crawled up onto the table and grabbed another sandwich, then crawled over to Cindy and held it out to her, offering it to her from as far away as he could but close enough for her to reach.
