If I'm understanding this medical article correctly, then I was right. The article indicates that the disease usually doesn't set in til adulthood. It is exetremely rare for it to occur in childhood, but even when it does the child does not come out of the womb looking like Erik is described. So he could not have been born looking the way he did. The article also seems to indicate that the skin is so fragile and blisters so easily that manual labor and many daily activites become difficult/impossible and that in severe cases the hands shorten, atrophy, and contract. So wouldn't Erik's hands be a horrible mess after poling the gondola across the lake or playing a musical instrument? o.O??

To be brutally honest, I have no idea! biggrin Maybe you could register to that forum and post the question yourself, then update the rest of us on what you find. Or you could probably call a hospital or some sort of medical 1-800 line. I'm sure they'd have some sort of reference or information for you to use.
