history: carmaic was sent out as an orb several decades ago to a young woman whose wish was to be loved. tebynah was an intelligent, attractive person who was not particularly good with people, though all of that was relatively irrelevant, as she lived in a family of very devout, fanatic muslims who were heavily involved in various terrorist acticities and who required only that their women be perfectly obedient and reasonably attractive. tebynah called him rahim when he was an under, and when he aged more quickly than a child ought to, she started calling him hazaan so that no one in her family would suspect he was anything but one of the many children which always seemed to be underfoot. she told him everything and shared with him the stories she dreamed up but was forbidden to tell. when she was eighteen her father arranged a marriage for her to one of his favored lieutenants, a handsome and ambitious young man with whom tebynah hoped to have a better life. carmaic, then hazaan, could not come with them to their home, and so he was not there to witness the abuses tebynah suffered at her husband's hands, he only saw the results when she and her husband came to the grand family home, at which time tebynah would go with the women and hazaan would blend in until they could steal some time alone together. she told him what was happening to her, but there was nothing either could do about it. her father wouldn't care, and he was the only one who could have made her husband stop. almost a year later tebynah got pregnant with her husband's child, which she was told was a girl. from what hazaan heard when the family gossiped later, tebynah killed herself, leaving a note which said her child was a girl and she would not be responsible for bringing another person into the environment she had been forced to endure. with tebynah dead, hazaan was returned to the underground and to his own people. among the drow he learned that he had another history, that in his former life he had been a mage of impressive power named carmaic tyrsinth. the matron of his clan decided to have him re-educated in magecraft. torn by grief, carmaic embraced the life offered to him, grateful to have anything else to cling to but his memories of tebynah and earth, though he simultaneously strove to recover his lost memories from his lifetime among the drow. before being returned to the human worlds, he was largely unsuccessful in recalling his past life outside of a full hypnotic trance, which he was reluctant to enter because it would leave him utterly vulnerable to memories of any sort. recently, when jareth reassigned him, as it were, he resented it a great deal, but he came to genuinely care for sterling, though in a very clinical way. he was very businesslike in his desire to see sterling's wish granted and so earn himself legs and passage home. he doesn't know what plans his matron has for him, but he'd rather be there than above.

history: sterling's mother works as a photographer for national geographic, and so she's away frequently. in sterling's sophomore year of high school she caught her husband having sex with her secretary and they split up, and she never came home again. her husband moved to l.a. so sterling was left alone in the house to raise himself, basically. the only people who know are sterling and the family lawyer. as a result of carmaic's interference, sterling's mother has agreed to come home.
