"No," Dari said, "I am the only one of my kind on this planet. Toby raised me from a little blob, so it's reasonable he should 'dadmode.' I got my ring from an ancient faerie woman. Not like fairies, like fluttery little flowery things. They were real, robust faeries. Like Lori. She enchanted the ring so that it would show my truest form, and apparently my truest form is male, and a close relative of Toby's; brother, son, something. I had to paint my body before when I went out. It caused a lot of problems for me. Now I can walk around like anyone else." He smiled to Cody.

Cody snorted. Lori? A fairy. It fit, he supposed. It was also fairly funny. "And Luca is an elf, isn't he? I saw his pointed ears. Lord of the rings style and all." He paused. "What is Maia, then? I'm pretty sure she wants me dead."

"He's a wood elf, yes," Dari said. Nobody got this much information on the first go. Dari trusted Cody to not tell. He laughed then.
"No, Maia's a selkie. You know, she has a pelt and puts it on and becomes a harp seal." He grinned. "She'd threaten to feed you to a shark if she wanted you dead."

Cody grimaced and offered Dari his phone. There was a text from Maia. It seemed to imply Cody would suffer worse than sharks if Dari came home crying again. "I think she's worse than my mom," he complained. "So that's why you said you'd seen seals in Oregon. Hah. You guys went looking for her, then? Aren't selkies supposed to be nice fairies?'

"They are. She's just mom-mode," Dari said. He read the test and rolled his eyes. "I'm sorry about that. She saw me crying and just didn't ask. She's very protective of me. Really the whole Seelie-Unseelie divide can be breached fairly easily with some." He shook his head to clear it then. Right. There had been a question.
"I don't know if you saw that viral video of a seal turning into a woman? That was Maia. It took us forever to get the internet to calm down, and we had to relocate her... or we were supposed to. We all know where she is now."

"I thought you were mommode," Cody teased, and kissed Dari's cheek. "You must be very special to her, then." He paused, thought about it and shook his head. "I didn't catch it. You did relocate her," he added, grinning at Dari. "Here."

"Actually! Hah. Actually we did relocate her for a very short while. Toby was in love with her but wouldn't admit it, so I arranged to have her sent away, with her permission of course. Eventually Toby called her in tears and begged for her to come back and that was the end of it. It was slightly devious, but well worth it." He kissed Cody's forehead.
"Love, you aren't just my first boyfriend. You are my first significant other. You're my first everything."

"I think Toby told me about that," Cody said. "At least, that Maia went away and he was stubborn." He smiled at Dari. "So you've always been a bit devious?" he asked.
He paused then, and took Dari's words in. He kissed his cheek. "First and last," he said, softly. "I love you."

Dari nodded, and then simply made eye contact with Cody as he thought. Dari touched Cody's cheek and smiled.
"Yes. I love you too," he agreed, and leaned up to kiss Cody properly.

"Come with me to the park tomorrow?" Cody asked, when the kiss broke. He wanted to propose properly. To tell the world that he and Dari were together--and forever. Despite secret identities or crazy gangs, this was love. This was true, and real.

"Sure," Dari said with a smile and a nod. He had no expectations.
"Don't you have any questions for me? The moment I said 'alien' I thought you'd be all over it." He winked and stroked Cody's back with a couple fingers.

That was the trouble. He did have questions, many; but those questions didn't seem to matter when he thought about Dari. Dari was Dari, nothing had changed. "What's space like?" he asked. "Do you remember where you come from?"

"Yes," Dari nodded. "Space is beautiful, and silent. I was never on my home planet as I am now. I was scraped in three parts from the walls of the crashed ship, after the crew depressurized and exploded. When they combined the three samples, they made me of a pair of lovers and the co-pilot. I remember their lives, not my own. I didn't exist until... seven or eight years ago. It depends on when you consider me 'alive.'"

Cody's hold on Dari went lax. The alien's words seemed to have more of an effect on him than even their discussion about werewolves. "You're ....eight years old?" he asked, baffled.
