"You want t--" Toby turned to Maia. "He wants to talk to him, Maia!" He huffed and started up the stairs. "I'll go ask him. He's not feeling particularly well. I can't say for sure he'll want to talk to you." He got to the door. "Dari?"
Dari sat up in his bed. Toby pushed the door open the rest of the way with his foot.
"Dari, Cody called."
"What?"
"He wants to talk to you."
"What?"

Maia huffed. She'd tried protecting Dari and this was the thanks she got? She took a book from the counter and began reading it.
Cody couldn't blame Dari if he never wanted to speak to him again. ********. He'd screwed everything up. Why couldn't he have seen past the fact that Dari was an alien? Why couldn't he have reacted with love instead of fear? He waited.

Toby offered Dari the phone. Dari hesitated, looking at it, and then took it. He didn't really want to hear Cody's voice. He was afraid.
"H...hello?"
Toby left the room, but stayed just outside the door.

"Baby, I'm so sorry!" Cody blurted, as if expecting Dari to hang up. "I'm so sorry. I...can't even...I tried to call. I..." he didn't know what to say. He'd tried to call so many times, so many times to apologize, to remind Dari of their love... Now that Dari was on the phone, his tongue felt heavy.

'Baby.' Still? Had that been a slip? Dari remained silent, still not breathing, for several seconds.
"I haven't had my phone." It was dead by now, right where he'd left it. There had been no use for it. He hadn't left Toby's side except at home.

"I've been trying to call for days. I must've called Maia's phone a hundred times but she wouldn't answer. I'm so sorry... I want to see you." He loved the guy! He had to make this right. "I mean. If you want to. I understand if you don't... I just." He sniffed and wiped at his eyes. "I miss you, love."

"I want to see you too," Dari said. "This isn't--" Cody sounded sincere. He sounded like he'd been crying. It wasn't a set-up.
"Where?"

"The park?" Cody suggested. "Where we met." He didn't plan to propose. Not tonight. The ring set he'd bought was carefully tucked into his bedside table. He needed to fix things first.

Toby looked toward the door. They were meeting up?

"My place?" Cody suggested, then. "We don't need to talk, love..." He just wanted to hold Dari. "Can you come now?"

Dari swung his legs out of bed, plugged his phone into the jack, and started out of the room.
"Keep Maia's phone," he said as he passed Toby, "I'm going to Cody's."
"Should you bring--?"
"No. I'll call if there's a problem." He jogged down the stairs, then ran back up, found his ring in the drawer, popped it on, and went back down. "I'm coming, Cody. Give me a few minutes."

"Okay." Cody rubbed at his face in hopes of rubbing away the red splotches crying had left there. He was relieved. Dari was coming. Good. He laid back on his bed, setting down his phone. He hadn't bothered to clean house. He'd called in to work. He'd called his mother the first night, crying; but she'd refused to listen, saying only that if Dari had left him there must've been a reason for it. "I'll see you in a few minutes."

Dari arrived in short time, having gone just a bit faster than usual to get there. He barely locked the car before flying up the stairs to Cody's apartment. He banged on the door like a panicked escapee, not an ex-boyfriend.

Cody opened the door and moved aside to let Dari in. "Hey. Sorry about the mess..." He hadn't cleaned. "Do you wanna sit down?"

Instead, Dari fell into him and wrapped his arms around him, tugging him close to his chest. He kissed his temple and sighed.
"Thank you."
