Well, according to the books THEMSELVES, it's not really what the hat puts you in, but which house you choose to be in when it sorts you. That's how both Harry & Hermione ended up in Gryffindor when the hat was considering otherwise.

Fun with tektek!
Yeah, wen I take quizzes I end up in either gryffindor or ravenclaw. But if I had to choose, it would probably be gryffindor, because i like all the people in there, and you know thwy'll make good friends. Besides, I'd probably have a hard time keeping up with most ravenclaw students anyhow. 3nodding

Okay, I feel like finding out what house I would be in. So I desided to take a bunch of test to make sure... Hufflepuff - 4 Ravenclaw - 1 Gryffindor - 2 Slytherin - 0
So ummm... I guess that puts me with LadyD!

The total lack of character development in Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw kind of make them less appealing choices too... I mean really, you get to know one, maybe two characters from each of those houses and everyone else is either in Gryffindor or is completely two dimensional and evil and is in Slytherin?
Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter, but the fact that the people in Slytherin were so archetypal really bothered me. Like really, if everyone in Slytherin, without fail, is an evil bully who is rooting for Voldemort, maybe they should just expel anyone that the hat sorts into that house. She didn't make any Slytherins good or likable or multi-dimensional like real humans are.

Yeah, Slytherin sucks. It would have been nice if someone could have made friends with a Slytherin at one point in the story. You know, like Ginny or somebody (who's a good enough person to befriend someone unpopular like Luna). There were no Slytherin's in Dumbledore's Army even though I'm sure not ALL of the Slytherins liked Umbridge's disgusting personality. Somehow I don't think all of them would enjoy obeying her stupid rules even if Slytherins are huge suck-ups by default.
It seems that since Slytherin has such a bad reputation, all of the kids who would normally be sorted into Slytherin (like Harry) beg the hat to put them in Gryffindor or one of the other houses, while the people who are proud of being stuck up rich dark wizards all go to Slytherin like they want to.
And the "racism" against Slytherin is awful. All of the other houses think poorly of Slytherin for no damn good reason. Imagine those poor first years who get sorted into Slytherin, and then suddenly no one they met on the train wants to be friends with them anymore. So Slytherins can only be friends with other Slytherins, and it gives them an "it's us against them" attitude.
Funnily enough, the adult characters are more 3D when it comes to their houses than the kids are. Wormtail was a Gryffindor and we all know what happened to him. Meanwhile, Slughorn was a Slytherin and while he uses "any means to get his ends", he's a good person at heart. Let's not talk about Snape, who's either a horribly evil person or a hero with a terrible burden.

Eh, I think there were a couple things that were left out of the books that should have been in. (Like a good Slytherin for starters) But I guess she wanted them hate-able, so thats what they became. *shrug*

I agree on some aspects, but then again i disagree. sweatdrop Is it wrong to judge all Slytherins as being evil? Yes. But then again, when was the last time a Slytherin said "Excuse me" in a corridor? And i do like the theory of the first years, but then again, the sorting hat really see's the person you truly are on the inside. Harry was considered to be put in Slytherin, yes, but we also know that the sorting hat likes to speak in riddles. He was considered because of his talents. I personally think the Sorting hat likes to mess with people while he's inside their head, just so they're sure about themselves. So first year slytherins most likely are bad somehow inside, so i wouldn't think that they would be real chatty with other kids on the train.
As for the matter of no slytherin's being in Dumbledore's Army. Of course they may not like Umbridge, but think of what she taught and what the D.A. was really about: Defense against the dark arts. Why a Slytherin would want to learn to defend themselves against something they themselves embrace is beyond me. but yeah, that's my two little cents.

Still, Slughorn was a Slytherin and he didn't embrace the dark arts. He's just cunning and resourceful. He gets what he wants by questionable means but tries not to hurt too many people down the road in how he achieves it. So we've got at least one former Slytherin who is a good person.
Maybe the good Slytherins are too boring to be mentioned. After all, Draco's group of cronies doesn't comprise of the whole house, but they're the ones we know about because they're involved in his plots.
And look at most of the dumber, uglier Slytherins. The poor things are inbred to keep "good blood" in the family. They don't have the brain power to do anything but be followers.
I have a lot of pity for poor Slytherin house.
