"Uh-huh," Toby said, and a half-grin lit his face. He knew well that Kevin had a bit of a crush on Maia, but there was no use in humiliating the kid. "And shes my fiancee now."

"Is there a difference between girlfriend and fiancee?" Kevin asked. "What do we wear at the beach? You can't go in that. You'll get too hot."

"There is. A girlfriend is your girlfriend, and a fiancee is your future wife," Toby said. Then he chuckled. "Well, if you don't have swim trunks we can buy you some, or you can just go in shorts." He didn't think even Dari would have a pair to fit the boy, although he was filling out nicely now that he was eating regularly. "Yeah, this is just for work. I'm going to change."

"But why would a girl be your girlfriend if you don't plan to marry her?" Kevin asked, blinking. "So you're going to marry Maia for sure now? Good! I don't think I have any...I have shorts packed, that'll work."
He smiled. "Will Maia come to the lake with us?"

"Well some people like to just casually date. You know, they date for fun rather than for the future. Then sometimes you try for the future and it just doesn't work out. That's just how it goes" Toby shrugged. "I am. Next spring. You're invited, if you want to come. As for Maia, she's still at work. She's getting a ride home with Dari at the end of the work day."

"Why?" Kevin blinked. "Casual dating sounds weird. If you're gonna do something gross at least invest something into it. I can really come?" He beamed at Toby. "What do I wear to a wedding?"

They stopped by the house, Toby changed and then Kevin did, into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. "What kind of beach is it?" he asked, once they were back in the car. "There's no ocean here."

"It's a lake-beach," Toby said. He was much more comfortable now and prepared to deal with a teenager at the beach. "It's sandy and everything. There'll probably be a bunch of people there, though. We'll find our own spot."

"Oh, like mine," Kevin smiled then. "Lets find the best spot! I don't like other people," He mused, and paused. "I guess it doesn't matter how many people are there, we can ignore them!"

Toby laughed. Of course he didn't.
When they reached the lake it was surprisingly sparsely-populated. Maybe it was for the time of day? Toby couldn't be sure,but he was grateful for it. He slung their beach bag over his shoulder and nodded for Kevin to follow.

Kevin followed Toby happily. He was glad the lake wasn't as crowded as Toby had implied it might be. "Ready to swim?" he asked, smiling.

"We have to stake our claim first."
He found a spot to lay down their beach blanket and then stripped off his shirt and stepped out of his pants to reveal swim shorts. "Alright. You ready?"

Kevin removed his shirt and tossed it onto the blanket. He stepped out of his shoes and grinned at Toby. "Ready!" he said. He headed towards the water. He looked to Toby. "I bet I can hold my breath longer than you."

"I bet you're a filthy cheat!" Toby teased, sprinting for the water and slowing only when he had to wade in. He ducked under when it was deep enough and came up with a tall splashing wave for Kevin.
