As the familiar puff of smoke appeared, Iruka smiled. This was the farthest Nemu had ever gotten! He knew her grades were lousy because she slept through most of her tests and exams, but the few times that she'd actually been awake, she had passed easily. Would this be the same? Or would her lack of experience cause her to mess up.
"...zzzzz..."
"Of course, shouldn't've gotten my hopes up."
Iruka was just about to turn and leave, since it usually took at least an hour for Nemu to wake up, when the dissipating smoke caught his eye. What's this? Slumped on the floor, peacefully sleeping, was an exact copy of him! She'd done it, even though she'd barely managed to stay awake long enough. Even as he watched, her lack of consciousness caused the transformation to disappear. But she'd done it!
"It's about time. Too bad you weren't awake long enough to notice."
Even for aggravating cases like this, Iruka was a nice guy. He genuinely cared about his students, even when they made him really regret his choice in careers. And Nemu was certainly a unique case, he'd wait for her to wake up before telling her she passed.

A good hour or two later, Nemu finally woke up. Opening her eyes slowly, she sat still for a moment, waiting for the dizziness to pass. Sometimes it wasn't so severe, other times it nearly made her throw up. This time was somewhere in the middle. She looked around; yup, she was still in the academy classroom. Iruka-sensei was there as well, looking bored.
"Good morning sensei. So how far did I get this time?"
Iruka smiled when Nemu finally woke up, he'd been pretty bored just sitting there. He'd already polished all his kunai, tightened the ties on his scrolls and organized all the various other tools he had on his person. He debated telling Nemu she failed again as a joke, but decided against it. She'd tried too many times to trick her now.
"Congratulations, Nemu. It took a lot of work, but you actually did it! Now if you could just stay awake, you'd be an excellent kunoichi. So what do you want to do now?"
Nemu thought for a while. It was getting late, she could probably call it a day, decide what to do in the morning. She nodded a little, but it wasn't in confirmation, she started nodding off just a bit. Shaking her head, she made her decision.
"Well, I'm already so far behind the others that were in my class when I started, so I'm obviously in no rush. Would it be alright if I *yawn* stick around here and learn some more?"
Iruka gave no sign, but he was a little disappointed. Sure he liked being a teacher, but how much longer would he have to put up with her?! If just a single jutsu took this long, how much longer would he have to put up with her frequent 'naps'? Oh well, at least she was a good student some of the time.
"Sure, you can stay and learn as much as you like. What do you want to start on next?"
"Hmmm, I'll *yawn* think about it and decide in the morning. For now, I'm going to call it a day. Nighty-night."
Surprisingly, Nemu didn't fall asleep where she was, she actually managed to get to her feet and leave the classroom. Of course she nearly dozed off on her way to her home nearly a dozen times, but she did make it.

When the next morning rolled around, Nemu only overslept by an hour! Thinking it must be a good omen, she got ready and set out for the academy like she did so many other times. She made the trip without mishap, she didn't even fall asleep, so she was only two hours late for class.
This was of course met with some surprise by the rest of the class, and Iruka-sensei, who all were used to her ridiculously late tendencies. But today seemed different, Nemu seemed wide awake. Not about to pass this opportunity up, Iruka went right into the next lesson, which happened to be Bunshin no Jutsu. Some of the students seemed unhappy with this, others seemed ecstatic, about what you'd expect.
Iruka demonstrated the lesson, showing the different hand signs and chakra requirements. It was a little more complicated than the Henge no Jutsu, but those students who'd already mastered that didn't seem to have much problems getting used to the different levels of chakra and concentration required. One by one, the students moved to the front of the class and attempted the new jutsu. Some succeeded, some almost did, and others failed miserably.
Finally, it was Nemu's turn. If there existed someone who could hear thoughts, they'd likely be surprised to hear Nemu and Iruka both wishing that Nemu could stay awake through the entire jutsu for once. But the time for wishing was over, now was the time to actually do something. Nemu got ready, built up her chakra, and started.

In a puff of chakra-burned smoke, Nemu disappeared, hopefully to be replaced by multiple copies of herself. This technique was more difficult than the Henge no Jutsu by several degrees, which was why it was being taught second. Wether Nemu's current wakefulness would be enough to handle this new challenge was anyone's guess.
As the smoke cleared, the results became obvious. Where before there stood one figure, now there was three. The first was Nemu, the original. Of course she'd look normal. The second was the first clone. From first glance, it looked similar to the real Nemu, but there were a few discrepancies. Not too many, pretty good for a first try. But the third! Half of the class burst out laughing at what they saw.
It was Nemu all right, but not looking as she was now. No, she was in her jammies! Not just that, but she had a teddy bear in one hand and was struggling to stay awake. The third Nemu yanwed hugely, and of course yawns are contagious, so the other two started yawning as well.
In twin puffs of smoke, the two clones disappeared as the real Nemu managed to move back to her seat. She'd barely sat down when she finally fell blissfully asleep.
"Well, you were close, but I don't think close enough. Try again when you wake up."

Class continued on while Nemu dozed. Iruka explained the jutsu in further detail, giving out pointers on what might help those who couldn't do it pull it off, or for those who'd already managed it, to maintain it longer. Much of these details probably would have helped Nemu, and they were written on the board, but her sleeping through them would surely hurt her chances.
By the time Nemu woke up, the entire class had already mastered the jutsu, with the exception of her, of course. But she wasn't disturbed by this, the same thing had happened so many other times it didn't faze her anymore. So once Iruka motioned her down, she was able to remain calm as she readied herself for her next attempt.
She read all the pointers on the board, spent a few moments making sure she udnerstood them, and took the opportunity to ask a few questions. Once that was all done, she was finally ready to try. Straightening her posture, she prepared herself, building up chakra and goign through the signs. Finally, she began.
A large cloud of smoke appeared, and began to drift away, masking the results of her newest attempt. Most of the other students watched closely, eager to see if they'd get another laugh out of Nemu's excuse for clones.
But not this time! When the smoke cleared, there stood three Nemus, all three awake, all three looking virtually identical.
"I did it? I really *yawn* did it?"
"You sure did, great job!"
In her happiness, Nemu didn't really pay attention to what she was doing. When she yawned, the contagious nature of yawns made her two clones do the same, although both did the full body arm stretch yawn. They hit each other in the chin, and promptly disappeared. Nemu looked a little embarassed, and went back to sit down, the laughter of most of the class filling the room.

Matthew walks to school taking a new path. Matthew was told to go this way by his teacher, Iruka. "Uh...I'm so tired." Why couldn't they have school a few hours later. I swear I could use the extra hours of sleep. Matthew finally comes through an opening to the river 2 miles outside of the academy. "Wow, I havn't been here before."Matthew exclaimes. "Well there is a reason for that" Iruka says as he waves to Matthew. "Welcome to Water Walking. Water walking? "Is that the same thing as walking on water?" Matthew asks. "Well yes" Iruka says. "It's kinda self-explanitory". Wow walking on water now this is the training I've been waiting for.

Class was dismissed for the day, and Iruka reminded everyone that there were other teachers offering supplementary classes for those who wanted to hone their skills, or learn new ones. Some students signed up, others were ordered to, and others thought it was all a big hassle.
Nemu, wanting to take advantage of her waking hours, immediately signed up. She hadn't even noticed which list she'd put her name on until later, after class was dismissed. She would be attempting to learn the Art of Substitution, with one Isuta Sagi.
She went on her way, apparantly Sagi preferred outside more than classrooms; she had quite a walk in store for her. Doing her best to stay awake, Nemu went on her way. Down the street, towards the edge of the village, into the forest. Sagi certainly seemed to like tranquility, Nemu was barely within the confines of the Leafe Village anymore.
But finally, she got to her destination. A small hut in the forest, it looked remarkably simple and rustic, as if it'd been made before the village. In fact it was only made a dozen years ago, but not by very experienced hands. Even so, it had an aura of peacefulness, that very nearly lulled Nemu into sleeping again.
"Hello there. You must be here for extra lessons?"
Nemu looked around, where had the voice come from? She looked more carefully, and finally saw an odd movement out of the corner of her eye. By the time she turned to face that direction, Sagi was already sitting in front of her, like he'd been there all along.
"Um, yes, how should we start?"
"In time, in time. First, sit down, and pay attention..."
Nemu did as she was asked, and Sagi began talking. He was explaining how the jutsu worked, what it meant and why it should be used. It was avery in-depth explanation, and his voice was so peaceful it was no surprise that Nemu fell asleep. Even people who didn't have narcolepsy very well could have done the same.

When Nemu finally awoke, she felt a disconcerting wave of dizziness and confusion. Where was she? Then it came back to her, she had gone into the forest for her last lesson, and had obviously fallen asleep again. As she looked further around herself, she saw that Sagi-sensei had... fallen asleep? No, wait, he was meditating. She wasn't sure if she should try to get his attention, let him know she was awake and ready to continue.
But before she even had the time to finish deciding, Sagi opened his eyes and looked right at her. She blinked, a little surprised. Had he known she had woken up?
"Ah, good, you're awake. I hadn't thought I was that boring."
"No! It's not that, Sensei! I just fall asleep a lot, it wasn't because of you!"
"I see. Then, are you ready to begin?"
"Hai!"
Not saying another word, Sagi decided to not tempt Fate with another long-winded speech, just in case. Instead, he silently showed the combination of hand seals that would be used for the jutsu. Very slowly at first, then a little faster, and then faster still, until it was just short of what a ninja might use in actual combat.
Nemu watched carefully, trying to copy his actions as she began to memorize the pattern. There were a few mistakes the first dozen or so times she tried, but soon she began to get the hang of it. Once she had the pattern down sufficiently, Sagi stopped performing the signs, instead letting Nemu try them alone, watching her progress.
