By the time Jessmet made it to ground-level most of the dragons had ceased their keening. She found a seat just as the determined little green found Kesslan. She could feel herself calming, her heartbeats returning to a normal rhythm. Her face was flushed and tear-stained, her hair frizzing out of her plaits, but the overwhelming sense of despair had retreated.

Did you see, love? This one made it.

The last one does not move, Jessmet, mine.

Flying into the crowded Bowl, R'lus was only able to make out a brilliant, nearly teal green being led off the stands by a dazed youth. It was always the same, they were always so. Even after a tragedy such as this Hatching was! The queen was young, it showed promise. Shaking his head, the man slid from Briariath's back to go further into the stands. There, he noticed one more egg, left by itself next to the shards of the shells its siblings had left.

Sending out a searching thought to Briar, he was met only with a deep sorrow. There is no voice in that one, Mine. It will be sent to rest between with its brother. The frown only etched itself deeper into his forehead. There had been a rumor of a girl on the Sands before it was time, but he hadn't credited such a rumor with any truth. Seeing the state of the Weyr now, he wasn't sure that had been entirely wise.

"Seems like we made it back at the right moment, Briariath." Maybe at the Feast later, and there had better be a feast later, he would find out more.

Kyllae was...hardly aware of anything. That blue, she...she might've killed it. She did kill it. Why? Why was she such a sharding dimglow? She hardly noticed E'rik's arrival. Only O'asis tightening grip on her hand, and E'rik's words, were enough to rouse her to semi-awareness. Oh, yes. She really did have to leave. She had to get out of here.

She stood up, a bit wobbly, shaking her head, as if to dislodge some of her confusion. "I...I didn't mean to," she whispered so softly under her breath, it was doubtful anyone else could hear her. She couldn't bring herself to look at O'asis, or E'rik, though she did move a little closer to the former harper. If he could help her right now...she needed it. She wasn't in much of a position or state of mind to help herself at all.

Santhea had to conclude that the Sandalwood egg was not going to hatch. Things like this happened in every clutch, but Thea wondered if this too, would be blamed on the blonde girl. She hoped she had got away fast enough, that a few of the people in the weyr were still the girl's friends and would help her.

Santhea got quickly off the sand, taking long strides with her short legs. She got into the cramped candidate's dorm, and switched the sweaty white robe for shorts and a shift, and no shoes, as usual.
Then she went out to the lake and cried.

As F'sey began to round up the new Weyrlings, Rinfala dug her heels in with a protesting noise. "But the last egg...there's still one out there. We can't just leave it there." Even if a foal was stillborn, you didn't just let it sit there. You dealt with it quietly and gently, and then you continued to live. Death was a part of life, but this thought was cold comfort to the new goldrider.

It is gone, Mine. Arioth's voice cut through her thoughts with a hint of chill. She had not seen it go between, and thus the impact seemed to miss the unempathetic gold. You have things to do.

...Yes, yes she did. With a reluctant nod, Rinfala followed the rest of the new Weyrlings.

"A'nt. Good to meet you. And you, Matsukazeth. Yes, it's... It's terrible we lost one. ... Maybe two." A'bri was glancing out at the last egg on the sands, small and still, and at the little Blue that had come out after Varth and Arioth, who was clearly trying to leave.

"But we found ours, that's important. We were here when they needed us, so... It's not all bad. Some of it's amazing." He gave Varth an affectionate scratch, trying to soothe the still-distressed Brown. At least he was no longer keening, just huddling. "At least this way, we know we did everything we could, because we were here."

Thought no one would care, did she? Neither of the candidates with flits escaped F'sey's view, though there wasn't much he could do about it now. His Weyrlings were already getting unruly and they really should be going to settle their dragons and what not and why did today insist on being so bloody trying? Why? The redhead gave a snort and rubbed his temple.

"YOU AND YOU. WITH THE FLITS." He wondered if they could here him bellow from here. Probably not. The man quieted and sighed. He'd catch them later. Turn them in to S'kagi, yes, he'd let the Wingleader deal with that. He had enough to tend to in the first place. And that B'lin fellow? And this new goldrider?

It was going to be a long two turns.

O'asis wasn't sure what to do. Kyllae needed him a lot... but Uktenath needed him badly, also. And in the face of that....

He looked to the girl, face saddened. "I'll make sure nobody follows," he murmured, retracting his hand. "And I'll come by later."

And that was all. He couldn't give her the support she needed, because Uktenath needed him more completely. He turned quickly, getting to his knees, hooking one arm around the bronze's neck, reaching the other out to stroke his eye ridges. The dragonet's eyes closed partly; I did not want this to happen, O'asismine, he told His quietly. What could I have done?

"Shhh. Uktenath, it's okay. Nobody could have done anything. Sometimes, things happen, and they hurt...."

It shouldn't have happened, Mine. O'asis had nothing to answer to that. Uktenath lowered his head and pressed it against the bronzerider's torso, taking full advantage of O'asis's embrace. There must be something we could have done.

... That... was about all S'van could take, really. When Galliath informed him that the egg was silent, S'van got up from his seat and left the Stands, left the Hatching Grounds. He could not be angry with Kyllae right now, and with O'asis for deserting him to see her. Not when Galliath was keening again, was mourning. The sound sent a shudder through him, and he tore off as fast as his long legs could carry him. When he reached his dorm room, Kia appeared from between, and clung to his tunic. The little Green firelizard made the saddest little sound he had ever heard from such a creature, and he brought her in, and tucked her into the neck of his tunic. "I'm sorry, Kia. I'm sorry." Even baby firelizards could be affected by such deaths, it seemed. "I'm so sorry."

The longer he stared though, the more he knew the truth. It.... wasn't going to hatch.... He sighed softly and turned towards his friend. "Well, at least there was one last successful hatching after the blue...." He paused... "I don't think I ever answered your question. But apparently, from what I heard, one of the former candidates had touched the eggs before they were hard. General consensus is that by touching them before they were ready, she damaged them. Which may have caused the violence of the beginning of the hatching, and the sadness of these last two." He shook his head and began walking towards the exit. "Well, lets go ahead and go to the hatching feast. We all need something to get our minds in a lighter frame of mind."

And the last egg was silent...
....
......

Two lost dragons because one girl couldn't keep her hands to herself. Had the eggs not still been hardening it may have been different.. but no.

No. One girl had killed two of the clutch. It was too depressing... too depressing. Alanna needed...needed... she needed to sleep. Her mind was going everywhere and she had nobody to focus her wandering thoughts on. No..
...
.....

She.. needed sleep. Yes, that sounded good. She would go and sleep now.

Kess was glad she was left-handed as she attempted to cut meat one handed, her other rather useless and in pain. Condoroth seemed well aware of that fact, crooning anxiously at her new rider as she watched the proceedings.

K'lanmine, that is sufficient. Condoroth is able to swallow those!

Nodding, the blonde used her the back of her good hand to wipe sweat from her brow, steadfastedly going back to the large cuts before her. She was doing a shoddy job, and she hated that.

Silent, she seemed to pick up the mental communication with ease, not minding the presence of another in her mind.

I can do this, don't worry for me. It's fine.

The girl gave a soft hiccup and fiercely tried to dry her face on Balin's clothing. It didn't do her much good, but she knew that the newest bronzerider was right. Her mother would tell her to keep her chin up and keep the tears to a minimum. A real lady would only shed a few tears and then be the pillar of support for the others. She had just took a deep breath and managed to collect herself when F'sey decided he had to rain on her parade. Miah jerked her head away from her comfort to stare at the Weyrlingmaster. If looks could kill, the one she was giving him would have done him in three times over. How dare he chastise her for seeking comfort in her friend? After a dragon had died? Did he have no brain in his head? Clearly they needed to put a woman in charge of the weyrlings if this was how a man reacted to such a loss. Her mother had always said that men spent most of their time thinking with their second brain but this was the first time she had seen such blatant disregard of feelings. She had half a mind to tell him exactly what she thought of people like him.

Fortunately for F'sey – or at least, she saw it that way – Balin wasn't going to let her get in trouble. Typical behaviour for him, but she supposed she shouldn't give him a bad reputation yet. He'd done nothing to deserve it besides exist. Steeling herself, Miah tipped her chin up and tried to stand a little taller. "Okay. You take care of him and I'll take care of Bachi. Just don't get lost on the way out of her. And if that man tells you anything weird, don't listen. I have a bad feeling about him." And his sexuality. She shot F'sey a final dark look before she set off back towards the candidates, intent on finding Bachi. Miah was not going to let him out of her sight no matter what he tried to do. She had, after all, promised Balin.

Bachi heard the yelling, and he wanted very much to go punch all the life out of the person yelling at his brother.

It could have been a twelve year old girl, and he still would have felt that anger. Couldn't anyone tell that he was distraught? If there was one place Bachi excelled that his brother did not, it was dealing with stressful situations. He didn't have the best tact in the word, barreling his way through problems with a tough mindset, but it was one that was useful.

Did he feel sad that the dragon had died? A little. But it wasn't his brother, and it wasn't his brother's dragon, and there was nothing to be done for it, so he wasn't about to dwell.

Here and now, he was quite upset over an entirely different matter and it showed in the scowl on his face.

Assuming Miah did come find him, he'd make damn well sure that she got back to her quarters safely, and he was sure Senra and her friend could easily help him with comforting her.

Later, after, he'd go find his brother and talk to him, but it was neither later or after yet, so he was forced to hold his tongue. His fists, however, remained clenched. If that Roka girl even bothered sticking around to 'help' him, she was going to get a piece of his mind. Thankfully, though, she'd left. Good riddance.

Veyes couldn't just stand there anymore as miserable as he was but still there was this last egg. It just sat there alone on the sands; was it...dead? He didn't want to believe that. Wasn't anyone going to do anything? No one going to check? He couldn't just stand there being impotent like he had with the blue. It wasn't right to just walk out like others were doing without even trying...Shards. No he wasn't going to just walk out...he'd do something.

Catching his breath from the heartbreak he felt within, he stepped forward rather than walking away...going straight towards the little egg and knelt down before it. He was raised on a farm, he knew quite a bit about herd animals. He gently touched the egg and leaned forward just a little to listen carefully with his ears for any sign of life. It was a chance he would take...if there were something within, it deserved just as much chance as the rest of them.

"Please, please...little one...everyone is waiting...Please be alive."
