I guess that'd be the point... didn't really mean to start this kind of discussion, it just kinda happened that way, but... whatever gets our people to stop dismissing Germans and their culture just because the word 'Nazi' pops into their heads when the word 'German' is said.
On a side note, I admire the ability of the English to forgive and forget. Much of the older generations of America still looks at Germany as if it had done them a great personal insult, and younger generations do the same because the older generations do it. Kinda like how just about every newly-registered voter back in '00 and '04 voted for Bush 'cause mommy and daddy did too.
Enough of my idealogical psychobabble! German is a beautiful language, dammit! scream No amount of history will ever ruin that for me. Next time some idiot accuses modern Germans of Nazism in front of me, I'm gonna...

What bothers me so much about this, is that most of the people who say that "all Germans are Nazis" or other stuff like this, have very little knowledge of what actually happened back then. They think that every German is -per se- evil. Thing is, this could have happened in so many other countries, regarding the situation at that time. Germany didn't do so well economically and the unemployment rate was quite high and Hitler made promises he actually kept (which is rare in nowadays politics). I am German and it is part of my history and identity. I am not denying the Holocaust or anything that happened, I just don't see what it has personally to do with me, as I was born a long time after WW2. But still, I so often had to face pure ignorance and rudeness just because I'm German. I also got told so many times that German is an ugly language just because of the way it sounds. I don't know where these people got that idea from, because when I actually said something in German they noticed it isn't as harsh as they thought. Compared to French, Italian or similar languages it does sound more rough, but I still think the beauty of the language doesn't entirely lie in how it sounds, but also what you can make out of it. And you can make a lot with German! But maybe that's just my personal opinion...

I wonder how many people would stop associating Germans with Nazism if they knew Hitler was Austrian... surprisingly, I'm finding out more and more people don't know this fact... sad, really.

I did but not that he was Austrian. The past is past and that people change and why IMF (International Music Feed) is sparking my interest in it. even though I really didn't want to learn it. I'm learning almost all the germanic languages anyway i'm suring adding one more won't hurt.

I'm too late for this discussion, but I'm an insane Germanophile so I have to say my piece.
Whenever people make "Nazi" comments around me I fight the urge to punch them and just laugh. And then, with lots of patience, explain the situation in Germany before the war, explain how they got there, that some Germans did resist and died for it, and that the Germans I've met are far nicer than most Americans I have. And, living in America, that's saying somehting. And if it still doesn't get through to them, tell them the true story of Columbus. Fun stuff.
Aside from all the Nazi stuff, I think German is the coolest language ever. I do think it's pretty gruff, but I don't see why that should be a bad thing. Just makes it sexier to me cool

I'm finally taking a German class at college... it's just a conversational and cultural one, though, rather than focusing any real grammatic stuff.
Doch es ist noch cool. cool

What I hate the most is people who are like "ZOMG NAZIS! Germans are EVILLLLLLL!!!!!111" but who are also like "I LOOOOVE ANIME IT'S SO KAWAII!!!!!11" and because of this choose to forget that we also fought against Japan in the war. It's like, come on. Jeez.
And srsly, it's time to let go. German's are just like everyone else.

Once we all showed up for our language exams, and one of the Japanese students said " Here we are, the Japs and the Germans!" And I added "The bad guys from WW2." There were lols.
But seriously, all jokes aside, my first comment stands.

*hugs everyone present* I'm glad to hear that there are people out there who aren't ignorant and full of prejudices biggrin I think we should take every person as an individual and not part of a group, country, collective, whatever... Anyway, I'm happy to hear that you took some German classes Hawk. If you ever need help, let me know wink Although I'm sure you speak German almost perfectly biggrin

yes... I guess that whenever someone has a question about German or need a translation, they post it on the main forum, and not in here... sad Vielleicht sollten wir ein wenig Deutsch reden.

But by God, I will take a German class! mad ... Sometime. Any help you could provide me before that time comes would be infinitely appreciated, though. 3nodding Perhaps I could send you a recording of me speaking in German and have you see whether or not my speech is any good.
