Oh no, heaven forbid Americans on Soviet rockets.

Isn't there enough going on right now on earth that might need seeing to first before we start building condos on mars?

By 2300's humans either get out of Earth or out of business... the resources are finite here!

I cried when I watched Atlantis launch. Partly for the 'end of an era' reason, but partly because watching the launch was such a moving thing. Think back to when the first orbit of Earth happened. The first time that man saw the globe as the little blue marble it actually is. The first time that we felt what it was like to be somewhat free of gravity, the only true constant on the planet. Everything we thought we knew changed. Everyone's eyes turned from the dirt to the skies. We wanted to be a part of the universe, not just a part of Earth.

We do not do it because it is easy. We do it because it is hard.

I think the Space Program was a tad hasty. Yes I know it was for America to beat Russia in the Space Race, or vice versa. But the total cost of the Space Program cost $192 billion. I'm sorry, but should we sort s**t out down here, then we can go into space when all is good down here?

Over it's entire life span. That's not too bad considering that's over 50 years.

US military budget is almost 700 billion. A year.

they are airlifting bottled water to AFG at 800 $ per bottle...
Marines from Guadalcanal are turning in their graves!
Add to this 100kk$ F-22s that dont have any enemy fighters too shoot at - Russian ones are mostly rusting away, while Chinese are not making such advanced ones in the big numbers. Yet.
Plus, the all-professional army sucks at geting boots on the ground. But any president to say word "conscription" is going to be very short on support...

Mainly because conscription does not work: you take people forcefully out of society and offer them nothing useful in return. An army should have high standards and not resort to conscription to fill its ranks.

It worked in WW2, arguably the last war US truly won. But nowadays, army is at war and society at the mall...

You know why it worked in WWII? Because there was a ******** huge EVIL ******** driving it along. It was a war not of helping a group of people to get on their feet and out from under all of the bullshit despot regimes that they've been under, but of taking out the bad guy. Also, coming out of the depression, a promise of a paycheck meant that a lot of guys saw the military as easy money. Not so necessary anymore.

More people died in 9/11 than in Pearl Harbor, and this time mostly civilians.... if that is not enough to mobilise fully for war, then what is?
And if economy goes along the current trends, people will queue for stable income of military pay.
