"That's a more fun way," Hannah grinned. "When Cody was two, spaghetti was forbidden in our household. Somehow it'd end up everywhere in the house. And on him! In his hair, in his ears..."

"Yeah. That's what she was doing," Dari said with a nod, then laughed again and turned to Cody. "In your ears?! You're gross. You were cute, but you were gross."

"Hey. I'll make Toby tell me all the gross stories about you as a baby," Cody retorted, sticking out his tongue at Dari. "All babies are gross!"
Hannah looked between each of the boys, paused, and kissed each of them on the cheeks. "There. Now I'm gross."

"Oh, you have no idea," Dari laughed.
"Hm? You're not gross. You don't test spaghetti by sticking it in your ear," he assured Hannah, "Besides, we don't carry grossness on us. A lot of people think so." He gestured to his head wound. "But we don't."

"You mean boys don't spread cooties?" Hannah gave a teasing gasp. She sobered then, and took Dari's hand. "No one should have had to got through what you two did. I don't agree with your life style but you make my baby happy. You saved his life. You would've sacrificed yourself for him. I don't know about my husband--" her expression soured briefly, "but I know there's no greater love than that."
Cody groaned. He'd known this talk was coming. He'd expected it the moment she'd suggested baking. But--she was being decent about it. Kind even, and he knew she'd accepted Dari anyway.

Dari chuckled, and then his smile slowly faded. Hannah was being serious. He had been trying so hard to avoid this. Damn it! He'd have to apologize--
Except he didn't. Instead, his smile returned. She didn't agree and she may never, but she accepted. That was the important part.
"I would die for him" he said, holding Hannah's hands. He looked into her eyes. He meant it. "Thank you."

"And I think he would for you," Hannah said, looking to Cody. "But I forbid either of you to do so. No dying!" She hugged Dari, then reached an arm for Cody. "You two will have a long happy life together. I just know it."

"No, ma'am. Definitely no dying," Dari said, smile splitting into a grin. He turned too and also opened an arm to Cody. Family hugs! Oh, the poor boy looked mortified. Oh well!

Cody returned the hug. "You guys are being all mushy," he complained. "Let's eat." He looked to the cookies wistfully.

Cody wanted to make a joke bout how Dari had already seen his butt, but that didn't seem appropriate in the company of his mother.
"Oh, I save those for special occasions!" Hannah agreed immediately, releasing the hug and heading for the fridge. She took out makings for sauce and then went for the cupboard, selecting a box of spaghetti noodles.
Cody sighed. "You guys tagteaming is no fair."

"I'm the boyfriend. I have to be on your mother's side," Dari said and got out of Hannah's way. "That's how I get her to like me. You'd better get used to it!"

Cody pretended to pout and kissed Dari's cheek. "We won't be on her side long if we don't start cutting up tomatoes,"he said.
Hannah glanced at the two of them. "You won't eat if you don't help."

Ooh, Dari liked to help! He thought maybe they were only allowed to help with baking!
"Sure! I'm just learning, though..." He moved aside to let Cody start collecting supplies. "Is there a recipe I should know, or just by taste?" He wasn't too great at the second one yet.

Cody began listing ingredients in Dari's ear. He smiled. "Come on, I bet I can chop my tomatoes better than you." He kissed Dari's cheek. "I'll show you embarrassing teenage pictures if you win."
