"We went camping not too long ago, and I can say that that's kind of a lie," Dari said, grinning over at Cody, "I brought coffee, just in case. We ended up needing it." Then he turned back to the album. "I think this one is adorable." He pointed to the sprinkler. He could just imagine poor baby Cody freaking out when the water came back on. Luckily he'd grown out of that!
"You really were the cutest little thing..."

"Hey. You're supposed to be on my side!" Cody complained, when Dari revealed that he'd still brought coffee on their camping trip. "I bet you were cuter," he said, kissing Dari's cheek.
"I'm going to preheat the oven," Hannah said, "Keep looking, Dari. He's got some particularly good ones further in. You boys hungry?"

"I am on your side!" Dari laughed and leaned into the cheek kiss. "Alright. Thank you." He turned to Cody then and shrugged. "I could always eat." It ran in the family.
He kept flipping through the pages, delighted by every baby picture he saw. It was like looking back in time at the years he'd missed in Cody's life.

Eventually baby pictures turned to first day or school pictures. Then, vacation and camping pictures. Pictures of Cody finding shells on the beach, holding a crab, visiting the zoo. "They tried to convince me to hold a tarantula but I wouldn't. In their butterfly house." He wrinkled his nose. "But it's nice. I think you'd like it. Butterflies flying everywhere around you."
"Sandwiches good?" Hannah asked.

"I've never been to one," Dari said. He didn't like the zoo much. It reminded him too much of old cases. Butterflies, though, they really didn't mind where you put them. "Could we go some day?"
He perked then when Hannah spoke and smiled. "Yes, thank you."
Then back to Cody: "You were a cute kid who grew up into a handsome adult."

Another one of the things Dari had never done. Cody did enjoy introducing him to firsts. He smiled. "We will," He promised. "Next week?"
Hannah came into the dining room after a while, carrying turkey sandwiches to the table. "Here you go," she said, smiling. "Oh, did you see Cody in his sailor outfit?"
"I really did burn that one."
"Cody! You didn't."

"Sure," Dari said with a little nod. He looked up to Hannah then and shook his head. No, he hadn't seen that one.
"Aww, Cody!" Hopefully he was only kidding! He went to get a sandwich, smiled and shook his head, then turned to Hannah. "Thank you."

Cody took the photo album and slid a picture out from behind another. "Mom made me wear that," he complained.
"Because you looked precious!"
"I wasn't happy even then," he pointed at the frown he'd been wearing in the picture.

"You just wait. I'm going to ask Toby to show me your baby pictures," Cody vowed. He took a sandwich then, smiling when he saw what kind it was. He took a bite.

Well Cody would be deeply disappointed, then! Dari just grinned to Cody and took a bite of his sandwich. It tasted very good, but he'd had a lot of sandwiches. Was this the taste of acceptance? Of love? Was the fourth dimension muddling with his tastebuds? Probably not, but it was nice all the same!
"This is good," he said to Hannah, "Thank you."

Cody ate his sandwich happily, and smiled at Dari. "I love you," he said. He turned the page. "We went to Mt Rainier in Washington they have this northwest trek thing where you can see all the animals that live around there. And there's a campsite there and bats fly over head." He shuddered.

"I love you too," Dari said softly, and it really was something to be saying it in this house. "Oh, really? What? You don't like bats?" He reached up and ruffled Cody's curls. Apparently they were at an acceptable age now and he was no longer embarrassed.

"No!" Cody made a face and shook his head. "Bats are creepy! All those kids books make bats out like they're cute and their faces ARE, but then they make those creepy noises!" he smiled at the hair ruffle. "Lets invite Toby and Maia to the zoo."

"The noises are no worse than rodents! Or tiny puppies!" Rodents were maybe not the best example. "Oh,I don't know. Maia doesn't really like the zoo... all those animals caged up. She's kind of an activist."
