Kyle_Rayner Time for a loaded question: Any of you dispute the recent action of the NCAA in banning Native American mascots (and maybe logos) from collegiate sports arenas? I feel both ways on it. On one hand, some of the mascots and logos are designed in a less than totally respectful manner... and do not always promote a realistic understanding of the nations they are based on. On the other hand, stuff like "minutemen" or "patriots" aren't always treated in a totally respectful manner either, so a certain level of caracature is established as the norm. Also, they can encourage those whose teams are represented by them to pursue knowledge about these nations that they might not otherwise be interested in. Knowledge breeds understanding. This decision also closes the door to an area that actually understands its team's namesake (and possibly has a decent concentration of students/residents who are connected to said namesake) to represent their heritage and/or regional history. It also smacks of attempting to sweet the issue of the wrongs done in the past under the carpet by declaring that nobody mention anything about it. To be honest, I feel that this ban is a bad thing. If it was an issue of misinformation, they could have taken steps to promote better understanding. Rather, it seems to be yet another instance of simply pretending that Native Americans never existed because it is easier than dealing with the mess at hand. Done right, these namesake teams could be a legacy to the courage and prowess of a people done wrong as well as a great way to promote awareness... but rather than do it right, the powers that be would rather drop the issue. Granted, I haven't exactly been following this issue too tightly, so I don't know exactly which groups were putting the pressure on the NCAA... and while I have some native heritage, it is seriously watered down, so I will not have had to deal with issues in the same manner as someone raised within the community.

Kyle_Rayner Peppermint Elf I dunno. I think they've gone a bit overboard on PC-ness on the whole thing. I knew this would drag you out of the woodwork. Anyway. Am I, as a full blooded tribal recognized Siouan, offended by Indian-themed sports mascots? Yes. I have a problem with sacred things, objects, and ideas; the drum, song, painted faces, regalia, eagle feathers, not being used/portrayed at sacred events no, but being used (pretended) at what amounts to an illegal immigrant's sporting events. Would blacks like it if there was a Black Panther mascot or team? Would whites like it if there was a Cracker or Jesus mascot? No. Yet they think its not offensive to us. Why? Because theres not enough of us to make a loud enough otherwise. Mascots I'm not too happy with. There's no reason for someone to be dressed up in "warpaint" and whatnot running around like an idiot in a sports venue. I don't care if they're full blooded or not. It's just... offensive. It's the logos I take issue with. I see absolutely nothing offensive about a stylized Native American being used as a logo. I find it rather flattering. Native Americans are seen as being strong warriors. To have a team named Warriors, Braves, or Chiefs and have it referring to Native Americans is not a BAD THING.
But then again, I just may be pissed off to see this:
 Go to this:

Not only is it ugly as sin, but... What the ******** does it have to do with a Chief??? scream

Well, I'm not really all that informed on it myself. My mother's a bit more knowledgable on this than I am, but it's almost 2am and she'd seperate my head from my neck if I were to ask right now. sweatdrop
Edit: However, if this was a case of my mom messing with me, I'll glare at her venomously for you. xd
