*should be studying other things but found interesting history stuff...* The Birth of the KKK in TN The KKK is, simply put, a product of TN's reconstruction years during/after the Civil War.
Background of what lead up to this:President Lincoln, for various political reasons, chose Andrew Johnson to be TN's governor with the task of getting TN to rejoin the Union. However, the Civil War was still in progress and TN's East Grand Division was still firmly occupied by Confederate troops. This was important because the east was where Johnson's main support base was and he had never been terribly popular in the Union occupied West/Middle Grand Divisions. So he was fighting an uphill battle in every sense. What made the situation infinitely worse, though, was Lincoln had over looked Johnson's virtual inability for bipartisanship and he basically started a crusade against Confederates and their sympathizers in TN. His actions were so strict against them that even TN's Unionists were like "Omgz, cut it out! They're Tennesseans, too! Quit picking on them! gonk " and he lost a lot of much needed support. When Johnson left to become Vice President, TN was super sensitive, pissed and on the verge of snapping not only from the stress of being captured by the Union but also because Johnson had inflamed the bitterness between his Unionist and Confederate populations. Governor Brownlow, who replaced Johnson, would prove to be even worse at reading the atmosphere/TN's mood.
The battle shifts from Unionist vs. Confederate to Black vs. White: Brownlow entered into the turbulent political scene and instead of trying to inspire harmony between the fractured public, he called on the Unionists to punish the Confederates and even encouraged violence against them. This further angered Tennesseans on all sides and isolated many of the Unionists from supporting him. Brownlow realized when the election was coming he couldn't possibly win because of how angry he had made Tennessee. So he quickly realized that if he could get the black population on his side then he could win another term as governor. So he basically put a gun to TN's head and forced the state to pass the 14th Amendment and tried to get the black population to think he was on their side. The white population, who had wanted to desperately get rid of Brownlow, was horrified to see his plan work and getting the black vote had gained him another term as governor. (TN's majority was actually vastly anti-Brownlow, but a huge chunk of people were disenfranchised because of CSA alliances.) Whites and blacks were already divided for obvious reasons and this was like throwing a match at a gasoline tank.
The KKK is Born: Originally it was just a handful of dumb kids that were bored and formed a club for former Confederates. However, when Nathan Bedford Forrest and several other more intense figures saw potential in the group they radically reformed it into an intricate political terrorism unit bent on getting rid of Brownlow. Their plan for getting rid of him? Get rid of his supporters. Who were his main supporters? Carpet baggers, scallywags and BLACKS as previously mentioned. The very first wave of the KKK targeted those who they thought had voted for Brownlow. However, the violence began to escalate as bitter and hardened former Confederates as well as outright racists started to use it as an excuse to get revenge. Even Nathan Bedford Forrest was disgusted by what the KKK had suddenly become and as soon as Brownlow left office he called for the immediate disbanding of the KKK. Thus ended the first official wave in TN... but it didn't end the violence by any means much to everyone's dismay.
TN's Reaction: Tennessee was in a very bad state after being a war zone and political guinea pig for Reconstruction methods. He'd been badly abused by both the CSA and Union for his conflicting loyalties which resulted in him distrusting everyone. Honestly, his hatred of Brownlow was ironically what reunited a large portion of his population. When the KKK stood up and claimed they wanted to get rid of the people TN hated by any means necessary, he was ok with it and over looked their actions. When the authorities would question people they would shrug their shoulders since TN didn't trust his government one bit nor did he believe they cared about his well being. So he sure as hell wasn't going to help them. It was only after Brownlow was gone that TN started to realize how dangerous and violent this group had become. He was scared of them and horrified by the terrorism that knew little to no bounds. Even after they had been officially "disbanded" the terrorist group was still operating on a lessor scale which would continue to intimidate/bully him into adopting the Jim Crow laws. (Although I'm sure TN probably would have done that regardless... Well, maybe. It's really hard to tell for certain since TN was in such a mess and people were scared to say anything against the KKK.) >.>; Now I really do need to get my school stuff done... but I just wanted to post that since I thought it was really interesting. I felt a little sad that Tennessee was bullied by his own people so he didn't know how to fight back. Why do you always wanna talk 'bout such depressin' stuff!? gonk Because I think the darker parts of history make history even more interesting. What happened in TN during/after the Civil War really is scary... but I think what happened to Missouri was probably worse! I just read a basic summary of events and was like "... Nope. Not touching that. I don't even know where to start. <_<;" *feels bad for Missouri* =_=;

so, I'll be changing classes on Thursday :3 (lol I noticed Sweden and Finland aren't in class yet, taking their sweet time xD)
so, I was thinking after they defeat the Thunderbird, another enemy is lurking behind them (or somewhere) waiting to strike them once the heroes are tired. I wanna do this for Kiki ^^
