Dari laughed softly.
"Oh, thanks. I do feel pretty swollen," he said. "At least I didn't break anything." His finger lifted to gently touch the side of Cody's face. "I love you, Cody."

"You're just as beautiful as the day I met you," Cody said then. "I love you, Dari." He smiled. "When they say true love goes through trials, I expected a dishwasher to break several years down the road. Not this."

Dari smiled. If he wasn't feeling so guilty he might have said the same for Cody. "Our trials will only make us stronger." He said it and he believed it, but what of the trial they hadn't yet stumbled across? Would their relationship be strengthened or forced to never exist?
"I'm so sorry this happened to the both of us, but I love you, and I'll always be here for you." He took Cody's hands. Toby had called him brave for throwing himself over Cody, but what was he supposed to do? Cody was only human. He could have easily died.

He smiled. "Yeah. I think mom likes you now," he added. "I guess that's a plus. But that might be risky, too... She might decide she needs taste testers for everything she makes. We'll get fat," he whispered.
Cody squeezed his hands. "I'll always be here for you, too, love. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to protect you."

"No, no, it's a definite plus," Dari said, his smile growing. "I would much rather she like me."
His bruised knuckles were not enough to wince when Cody clutched them. He would have taken any pain for Cody to be lucid and loving and suffering less.
"No, we were outnumbered. I'm trained in combat and I couldn't protect us. There were just too many. I drew them, though." He brushed the curls off of Cody's forehead, "We'll get the bastards."

"She seems too. Apparently saving me erases your crime of corrupting me. Even if we both know it's the other way around." He smiled at Dari. "I love you."
"I'm not worried. My boyfriend works for the fbi. I know you'll get them." He scooted forward, trying to get as close to Dari as possible. "Want to know a secret?"

He gladly wriggled closer to Cody. Cody was mostly damaged on the head and sides, so he was pretty safe to get close to. "Yes. What is it?"

The secret was he wanted to be with Dari forever. To make it official. Life was short, and tonight had proved that. Toby had seemed to suggest waiting on it. But what if something else happened? But what if it was the drug talking? ...He didn't want to move too fast.
Cody leaned in close to Dari's ear. "One day, I'm going to ask you a yes or no question."

Dari's eyes grew wide. One day? One day... But not before Dari told him. Never before he told him. He couldn't hurt him like that.
So soon.
He'd had to tell him soon.
Dari swallowed and smiled and smooched Cody softly.

Well. That hadn't gone nearly as badly as he'd expected! He smiled and returned the kiss. "I told Toby while you were in New York. He invited me to their wedding next year."

Dari just nodded. He couldn't think of any words. Not a one. His lips parted and nothing came out. He smiled.

"Of course," Cody said. "They're having it in Oregon, I figure we can act as tourists part of the time." That was something Dari had said he'd wanted to do. "I made cookies with Toby. We should make some together."

There were the drugs again! Dari laughed. He was much more comfortable with this than talk of marriage.
"Okay, that would be nice. What does your mom like to bake?" Just so he could be prepared.

"Cookies. Toby and I used her recipe. He told me to make some with you." He leaned in for another kiss. "Told him about us. He knew secrets."
