Dari turned back to look toward the other bed. It was so far away! Maybe he could roll it over...
"I will, eventually. I want to get their faces down."
"Before you forget?" Toby teased, trying to ease the situation. Dari did smile at least.

Cody yawned and nestled into his blankets. "I dunno about you guys but I'm sleepy." Maybe his mom would leave now. She was being far too friendly, especially since she'd kicked them out last time they'd been at her house!

"Get some sleep then," Dari said, leaning down to kiss Cody's forehead. He didn't recognize that Cody's mother might find it disgusting. He didn't really care, either. "I'll be here when you wake up."
Toby stood and tapped Maia on the shoulder. They should let Cody sleep in privacy.

Cody smiled at the kiss. "Goodnight love," he said.
Hannah didn't seem to mind it--if she noticed it. She bent down and kissed Cody's cheeks. "I'll call in the morning and see how you're doing." She promised. She went over to Dari and kissed his cheek. "Keep me updated."
Maia stood and took Toby's hand.

"I will, ma'am," Dari said softly, smiling.
Toby stood and offered his free hand to Hannah. "I'm Toby, by the way, and this is my fiance, Maia. It's nice to meet you." Just a quick, polite introduction before she left. The Southern boy in him demanded it.

Hannah took Toby's hand and shook it. She smiled. "Pleasure to meet you," she agreed. "I wish it'd been on better circumstances." She shook Maia's hand as well.

"Of course. Me too," Toby agreed, "Have a good day. We'll keep an eye on your boy for ya." He smiled sweetly.
Dari stroked Cody's arm softly and then made for his own bed and sat cross-legged. "You don't have any paper, do you?"
"...why would I have paper?" Toby asked.
"Could you ask for some? A pencil too, or a pen if need be."
"Of course." Dari was being short. He was hurting. Toby knew better than to deny him such a simple request in times like these.

Well! Toby was a sweet boy. Maybe she could get him over for baking too. She'd have to ask Cody when he felt better.
Maia dug into her purse and offered Dari a pencil. "Here," she said, going over to him. "I love you, Dari."

Dari took the pencil and smiled. "Thank you, Maia. I love you too."
"I'll be right back," Toby said, patting Maia on the shoulder. He was sure he could charm a few pieces of paper off of the nurse at the station.
Dari sighed and went to rub his head with stress, but hit staples and hissed. He shook his head.
Five random guys on the street. Random strangers. They had hated he and Cody so deeply, and for what? Their love?

Maia climbed up onto the bed next to Dari. "Hey," she said. "If you need someone to talk to, we're here. And I'll bring your laptop in the morning, alright?"

"Sure," Dari replied. They couldn't even talk about the complexity of the situation because Cody could wake up at any moment, and Dari doubted he was already asleep. He held Maia's hand with his own and smiled a bit weakly.
Soon after, Toby arrived with a small stack of paper. "For you," he said, handing them to Dari.
"Thank you." Immediately the alien began drawing.
"Had you seen any of these guys before?"
"No. Not even in the bar."

Maia smiled slightly and scooted off of the bed. "I'm sure the police will catch them," she said. "With your skills, there won't be any mistaking them. And we can keep an eye out, too."

Dari just shook his head, even if he agreed with what Maia was saying. This was all terrible and ridiculous. He began sketching in order of appearance, planning a full page for each man. They hadn't even sent a sketch artist to talk to him. Maybe they thought he couldn't remember a whole group. Idiots.
Toby hopped up on the bed to sit beside Dari and rubbed his arm consolingly. Dari didn't flinch, but Toby knew it helped.

The nurse came in to check on Cody, then paused to look to Dari. "Test results should be here within a few hours," she said, before leaving the room.
Maia sat in a chair beside the bed.

Fantastic. He'd made an enemy of the nurse caring for Cody this shift. Dari regarded the woman but said nothing, and then watched her leave.
"I could never have imagined there was so much hate in this world over the smallest thing. Homophobia exists, fine. Trying to beat two men to death with a crowbar is something else entirely."
