Hi, Switzerland! emotion_kirakira ... Omgz... Florida, I'm a little sad after reading all this about you. I kind of was aware of it, but hadn't really thought about it before... Florida History Stuff -Florida was born basically with the purpose of protecting Spanish possessions and also to eliminate competition in the Americas. The very first thing Spain ordered Florida to do was to kill a budding French colony that was being formed in present day South Carolina. Florida killed all the men and only spared the women and children, essentially executing the other infant colony.
-The reason Florida hated the Carolinas (SC in particular) as a colony was 1) they were encroaching on his claimed territory and 2) they had a nasty habit of enslaving/murdering his natives in raids where they would burn down the missions he had built for them. This was particularly bad in the early 1700's. (I knew the Carolinas did this with the natives and would pay natives to enslave/kill tribes they weren't allied with, but I didn't realize they would actually invade/attack Florida in the process.)
-South Carolina also hated Florida because he would harbor escaped slaves. He would give them work and even encourage them serve in his militia. (Mind you it wasn't equal rights, of course, but for the time period it was amazingly liberal of him)
-I already mentioned this once before, but originally Florida wanted to be friends with Georgia. However, Spain and England were fighting and Spain refused to allow Florida to sign any treaties and instead ordered him to start attacking the younger colony.
-Florida attempted to disband himself (basically commit suicide) when England took him over after the French and Indian War, but England pumped him full of English settlers after the original Spanish Floridians left. So he didn't die despite his best efforts.
-England allowed Florida to remain a Catholic and was surprisingly gentle with him, so when the American Revolution started up Florida remained loyal. (This is basically the same reason why the Quebec colony remained loyal, too.)
-When Spain reclaimed possession of Florida after the Revolutionary War, he forced Florida to expel most of his new English settlers. Florida's population never quite recovered and he remained a weakling until WWII. Honestly... it kind of sounds like Florida has been a major victim more so than an aggressor most of his life. sweatdrop Everyone is mean to me because they're jealous of how sexy I am! Q~QEr...
