"What's so beautiful about those?" Kara asked curiously.

Power, and things like that were intangible things, so how could they be beautiful? Sure if it was something else like maybe a child's laughter, she could understand, but power was such a strong word. If not, an excessively strong word, because it suggested blunt force without any grace, or maybe it was just what her mind connected to it.

Serenity shook her head. 'That's what I mean," she replied softly. "They're not beautiful ... but they're appealing enough to some people to make them covet it more than anything else. I'm not sure, but I think if there were someone else qualified for the throne, Atalya wouldn't mind passing it off ... she never wanted the position in the first place ... and when Regan-"

She broke off and looked away. "When Regan was killed, she was forced into it unprepared. And I fear she won't be able to keep things the way they are for long."

"Things are just tough now," Kara replied softly, "For Atalya I mean, it still hasn't been that long since your war if I recall, not even with the time difference. She is always thinking about how people view her, sometimes, it is the people who do not want the power, that are the best suited," she shrugged a bit, "The city is thriving the last time I was there, and while there is certainly security issues, it can't be helped. The country is recovering, and lord I remember now why I hated politcs," Kara commented off handly, "Thank goodness I let Tracy deal with all school politics, they're a pain."

Serenity nodded. "Atalya's the best person I know of to have the position she does," she agreed. "And while I do admit that I had once dreamed of Elnara being in that position one day - as she was born to be - I know that she's better off where she is now. Safer. Wanted."

"Besides," Kara added, "Any head of power, if you are responsible.. or smart," she added the last one in a bit of ironic sense, "You always have to watch what you do, always deal with people who can never fully be happy, because about half of those people can't see the big picture, and you always have to think about something else."

Actually this speel came from Donovan, when she had finally gotten around to asking him about the clans. He had some very opininated views about being in the higher ups.

"Very true," Serenity agreed with an amused smile. "While everything Ninako did during her reign was best for her people, several of even her decisions were questioned by many ... though even at her lowest, she had more respect than Atalya has now."

"Atalya though... is new from what my understanding holds," Kara replied with a nod, "Even now, especially if you tend to have rulers that can span into centuries, it would be hard to suddenly have a new one," she shrugged, "I think.... for most people, it's hard to adapt to change when everything else around you stays the same a lot, that or when things stay the same funny things happen. The latter applied for my potions teacher," she gave a funny look.

Serenity had opened her mouth to ask a question, but at Kara's last comment she blinked and closed it again.

"I'm guessing there's a story there, isn't there?" she asked curiously, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

"My potions master," Kara replied in great humour, "Was more centuries old than anyone at the school knew, partly because he never gave his real age. I do know however that he looked no different when I became a student, than when my father was a student at the same school. He's a bit ecentric for a teacher, but I guess if you've been teaching for the past three centuries, it would do that to you. He was very attracted to shiny objects.... we lost him on field trips to the jewelers and glass makers...."

"Field trips?" Serenity repeated, confused. "What ... are those?"

Kara smiled remembering that there were no schools perse as she scratched the back of her head, "They're trips that teachers or the school itself take students on to experience to see something first hand, often farther than what a student can normally go to or would normally go to. Like we once took a field trip to a temple that used runes, I think teacher on the walk up to the temple... I forgot now what attracted his attention."

Serenity laughed. "That sounds interesting," she mused thoughtfully. "Though I suppose it's like us taking our children places to teach them about things first hand - isn't that so?"

She smiled warmly.

Kara nodded, "Yup, that would be just like that. We always liked field trips, it meant we got out of classes, and what child didn't want that?"

It was always fun, and maybe they could get something while they were there.

"I never had classes to get out of," Serenity murmured, thinking back. "Not until after I was blind ... not to say that I wasn't taught, I was taught every waking hour ... but until I was four years old it was only fighting lessons, and only after that did I start learning real eduation ..."

Not until after she was a thoroughly trained killer.

"But once I was blind, there was nothing else that I could do, really, so I ended up learning more than I was originally meant to." She laughed.

"It's always nice to learn new things," Kara murmured as she followed Serenity.

Thinking back on it, Kara wouldn't have it any other way.

"Actually I just like the seeing new things part."
