I'm going to stetson university this summer for a double reed camp, there they'll teach me how to make reeds. I REALLY need to learn, because the brand reeds I buy just aren't cutting it. crying

Envious26 I don't play the oboe, but I do know that Jones reeds on the bassoon really aren't the best. I'd imagine it has to be the same for an oboe. The best advice if you want better reeds is to find somewhere online that makes reeds hand-made and well or you could always learn to make them. It's something even I haven't done. sweatdrop Haha! Reedmaking Hahaha! *collapses in a fit of hysterical nervous-breakdownesque laughter* I have issues with making reeds. I'm okay at final trimming them, but it's getting them to that stage that gives me issues. So I buy almost-finished ones from my teacher for $10 each. And all the single reed players in band get really weirded out when I whip off my reed, and pull out a mandrell, file, knife, plaque, and sandpaper and start mucking about with it. Fun!

Exactly the opposite of me. I can make it look like a reed, but making it play like one? 'Professionally' half-finished reeds are a bit easier to mess with, but if I pulled out my reed knife in class I'd get suspended.

It was not unusual for me to work on my reeds in class. A while back the contra-bass clarinet player a few chairs down asked if he could borrow my reed knife. I think he said that he used cut-down bari-sax reeds and that he wanted to shave the side a little. I told him that it was sharp. He said that he was a Boy Scout and knew about sharp knives. I told him that I knew that and that the knife was really sharp. He was like 'okay'. and I handed him the knife. At the end of class when he handed it back to me, he told me that the knife was indeed very sharp, and that he should have listened to me. He had nearly cut the reed in half.
We still laugh about that one.

Ah, oboes are so much harder than clarinets... Those reeds never want to cooperate. 3

To the Jones reed problem, I propose that you use Singin' Dog reeds. Yes, they cost a few dollars more, but it's worth it in the end. They play better and most likely last longer than the outdated Jones reeds. Thank you for reeding this (get it? REEDING... u guys suck! i mean inhale immensly [my band teacher doesn't let us say 'suck'])

When I was in elementary school (and junior high for that matter) no one knew what a bassoon was. Or any other double reed instrument. People always thought I played clarinet.

I got called an oboist a few months back from some guy working on the stage a concert.
I don't really understand how people make the mistake.. Even when I didn't really even know a thing about oboes or bassoons I still knew that they were VERY different things.

Yeah, it's a mistake often made, I guess it's just the fact that they're double reed instruments, but even then one is so much bigger than the other that the mistake doesn't really make sense.
