"That's always the hardest part. Be glad it's not Chinese or Russian, something with another alphabet entirely. You're going to get it, don't worry. My car, yes. I drive a headquarters car since technically I am a permanent resident? I have a license and an identity and all do you won't be in the wrong hands.

He turned then to bologna. "It doesn't, really. Not except in this word, for some reason."

"Don't worry. I trust you, at least to get me to a restaurant and back." Maia assured him. "You know. Since you must be a good driver to have a license! I heard you have to take tests and everything to go through it."

She glanced at the word, making a face. "Huh. So why'd they make one word sound and look different than any other word? It looks like it should be said bo-log-nah. Not something that rhymes with pony."

"Toby taught me, although there are classes you can take too. You do have to drive for the test-giver as well, and answer questions. So I can get us there."

"It comes from an Italian word, named for a town in Italy although it is not called 'bologna' there. I believe the proper pronunciation is 'balona' and not 'baloney' but time and rephrasing can do that to a word.

"Oh. Fun, that means you'll drive competively and fast." She teased him. "Are we done here?" she glanced at the book. "Are you going to be teaching me every day like Lori?" She asked. She was hoping to get reading soon. Do some research on selkies, and maybe learn about other fae as well as trying to find out how to help Dari.

"Oh, I see. ...I still don't understand."

Dari smiled and shook his head at Maia's quip, then turned his attention to the clock.

"We still have twenty minutes, so why don't we continue for a while?" He wasn't too keen on skipping learning time for excitement about a dinner date.

"Sounds good!" Maia agreed promptly. She was as excited about learning to read as she was about dinner. Her attention veered to the words Dari had written. "Can you give me more words?" she asked.

"Absolutely." Some time soon he would try to weave her knowledge of speaking English with reading it. Some words were written comparatively oddly but she had undoubtedly spoken or at least heard them before. That was for later, though. For now the words would remain reasonable. He took the paper back and began to write more.

At the end of the work day the boys separated dinner guests between cars. Annie and Lori went with Toby and Maia would ride with Dari. She'd had the most time to bond with him anyway, so she would likely be more comfortable. Besides, Toby's car could only comfortably hold 4 and there were 5.

Dari was painted-up and wearing sunglasses just in case the night should come early, and he parked beside the trendy-looking Japanese restaurant the others stood outside of. When he and Maia exited the car the others turned to smile at them. Annie waved and gave a little "hi there!" while Lori reached out to pat Dari on the back.

"Alright, are we ready?" Toby asked. Nods and assurances followed and the group all went in. The waitress was a cute little thing dressed in black and white and led them to a moderately-sized table. Some day they'd have to go to hibachi with Maia, Toby decided. She seemed the type to like that sort of thing, and he did too. Menus were handed out and everyone began to peruse.

Maia sat nearest to Toby after greeting Lori and Annie, studying the menu. She glanced at Toby. Huh. She'd never seen the dishes pictured on the menu before, but they seemed to be fish. "What do you suggest?" She asked. This was a bit outside of her circle of knowledge. It certainly wasn't somewhere one could order burgers, but nor did it seem to have anything she'd seen before.

"Dari's been teaching me how to read but I don't know these words," she glanced again to her menu. She was sure she could trust Toby's judgement, he'd introduced her to pizza, after all.

"Well, what do you like?" Toby asked, "Fish-wise, I mean."

"The Spicy Dragon Roll is amazing here," Lori commented, peering through his own menu.

"I think we might just get a boat and share, and whatever special things people want," Toby continued. Nods were returned from around the table before the waitress arrived to take their drink orders. When she left again, Toby waited patiently for Maia to respond.

Maia considered the question. What did she like? She'd never considered that, fish were fish. "Well. I don't know..." She stared at Lori, his words catching her attention. "Dragon?" she echoed. People ate Dragon? Well, that certainly explained their rarity. Lori had participated in it, though, and he didn't seem the type. Sometimes humans used strange names for things that weren't really what they were called, was that the case here?

"Is there tuna?" She asked.

"Oh, no," Lori said suddenly with his expression slightly worried, "It's just a name. It's tuna, actually. Spicy, though."

"Yeah, of course there's tuna," Toby nodded, "There's octopus and eel and shrimp and salmon and fish eggs and vegetables... and lots of different combinations. We'll get a big order and you can try out what you like, alright?"

"You can always have some of ours!" Annie chimed in, "They come in little rolls like in the picture. They're easy to share."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:46 am

"Good." Maia was reassured by this: she was glad Pixie wasn't in danger. She made a face at Toby. "Eel?" She echoed, wrinkling her nose. "Octopus?" Neither sounded particularly appetizing. Fish eggs? Yes, she'd heard humans, usually rich ones, enjoyed that dish. "Salmon sounds good!"

Rolls. Fish that came in rolls. Maia considered this for a long moment, glancing from Annie to Toby. "Raw fish comes in rolls," she complained.

Toby laughed at Maia's worry. He always enjoyed showing clients new things, but the poor selkie sounded so depressed.

"Well it's not all in rolls. Sometimes it's just sitting on top," Annie reassured her. Toby shook his head and added his own two cents:

"I'll tell you what things are so you don't have to eat anything you won't like."

When the waitress returned for their order, Toby took up for the main course of the chef's selected sushi in a boat. It'd be enough for all of them, and then Lori ordered a couple of special rolls as he was particularly unable to stomach big slabs of the raw stuff.

Maia wasn't particularly reassured by Annie's words. The fact that raw fish came in different forms didn't make it any less raw. She flashed the mermaid a small smile, though.

"No tricking me," Maia warned Toby, teasingly. What did they mean by boat, anyway? Maybe a boat shaped plate? "If I don't like it, I'll save It for Seamus."

"If you don't like it, we'll eat it and get you some tempura," Toby teased. He doubted there'd be any food left once they'd all gone at it. Annie's favorite food, stereotypically enough, was definitely sushi. "Also, I promise to not trick you. Maybe."

"You really like Seamus, don't you?" Lori asked.

"He came to visit us last night," Dari replied.

"Read as 'ran down the hall after closing time and yelled at the door'."
