Grim, but factual. The facts swirled in Kostya's mind, and he felt as though the bigger picture was there, just within grasp. If only he could stretch his fingers out a bit further, to touch it and--

I see. I understand, both Meaning + Classified. Thank you. I am grasping Infection == Inevitable. Our division is not the one that protects. I understand.

He clenched his fingers into a fist as soon as the text was sent. What would a good person do? How did they reconcile the differences between a doomed consequence and hopeful salvation?

Otto blinked, looking over at Maebe as she spoke. His face melted into a confused state. Before he had any time to think about how he felt about her being there, Sasha pulled his attention back to her. She had a knack for it; a commanding way of it. Was she playing with him now? She seemed to ignore Maebe altogether, and he wondered if perhaps he was caught in the middle of something.

But then again, the mission was where his focus ought to be overall.

"Um.. yeah. If we ain't fast then s**t might get real bad..." He spared another glance at Maebe, worried she'd think he'd ever think of ignoring her.

Oh, heeeeell no. Sasha couldn't have been more obvious if she was holding up a sign pointing at Otto with the words 'dinner' on it. All the adrenaline from fighting the good fight was gone, replaced by a damp, chilling dread.

"Otto." Maebe cleared her throat, and gestured with a thumb to the side. "Could I talk to you for a second before you go? Like, alone?"

It was hard to hear above the rumbling of floor tiles breaking apart, the low rumbling that was coming from somewhere (some faulty machinery?), the sprinklers raining water, screaming, and the sound of running all around him.

It was even harder to see which made being knocked over as a complete surprise and fell back onto the hard marble. Glasses askew, he looked up to see a figure ready to leap. If it wasn't for the green eyes, he might have hesitated, but instead threw Saliva up and fired without a second thought.

The thing was thrown back into the dark and he could heard it moving about around him.

Circlying.

A Life hunter came up beside the spot where Noah was starting another rune on the barrier slowly being rebuilt and dumped her unconscious cargo down beside him, giving him a smile that was not particularly kindly. "It followed you home, you keep it," she said, and left.

Noah squeaked, then scowled and dug a bandage out. "You dumbass," he muttered under his breath, "seriously."

It didn't seem to be taking, even though Noah was pretty sure he was doing it right. He didn't want to pull a more senior hunter off an important job. Maybe he wasn't focusing enough? Did that matter for bandages?

In that moment, it felt as though nothing else mattered: not the chaos in the mall, the blood-curdling screams that sounded in the distance, the rank copper-stink of blood on the air.

Sasha studied Otto's face when he turned to glance at Maebe, and there was the first sudden surge of rage. Otto had belonged to her long before Maebe had come into his life; their time spent together in the Lair was testament to that. Perhaps it was because Sasha was not so certain that Otto would return to her once he had succumbed to Maebe, or perhaps it was the fact that Maebe was perceived as a threat - but Sasha did not relinquish her hold on Otto.

Sasha remained silent, her eyes now locked once more on Maebe, and waited.

The bandage slipped and tore, its runes instantly going dark, and Noah blew out an irritated, worried sigh as he picked up another one. They were going to have to do a lot of work to restock after this, but ...

ANNOUNCEMENT

"Could someone spray those hissing cats with some ******** cold water?"

It did not seem to make much sense.

Kostya didn't move from his perch, paralyzed by indecision. He always fell to inaction when unsure of what to do, taking the path of least resistance.

The path of least resistance, here, would be to go with Death. To embrace his role of snuffing out lives before they suffered too much, before there was a chance for them to infect the healthier portions of the world, and--

Stop. Rewind. What were his thoughts? What were his conclusions? The proof was simple enough:

If:
Infection == Inevitable.
Virus == Infectious.
Antidote == Limited.
# Civilians > # Antidotes.

Then:
Civilians == Future Threats.

Then:
Threats == Neutralize.

But was that the only way? Kostya was missing classified information to be able to determine if this was the only course of action. Frustration churned in his belly. His next text went to a redhead, but this time, it was America and not Rep. Rep, who had understood his thinking far too well. Kostya, who had understood Rep's.

It was like a purpose had been swept out from under his feet. He'd never felt so lost.

America,

Too many infect, not enough antidote for all civilian and hunter, more enemy on way to prey on civilian and us. Grim.

I do not know what to do. No, that is false: I know what I could do, for Death Division, but do not want to.

I do not know how to make right choice. I need to destroy threats. But civilians, with logic, are future threats. Help me. What should be doing?

Maebe's warning hurt. Did she think he belonged to her? Even after all they'd gone through? They were individuals now. They were supposed to be learning to live without other people's influence, right? Or maybe that's why she was asking to talk. Still, he hated to be scolded for doing his own thing.

He felt Sasha's grip get tighter. Maybe this and that had little to do with him, and more to do with them.

He looked to Sasha once more, his gaze flicking back and forth. "Are you two... okay?"

In the dark, it was easy to feel as if he was alone. Was he alone? The hunters were only shouts, and even those sounded distant, primal, more shouted grunts than words. No techs were around to work on lights as far as he could see - which wasn't far. How was he supposed to know if anyone was coming to help?

You shouldn't expect help. Not you. You don't deserve that help.

If no one came, then it was just how that worked. Maybe no one was here left.

Maybe they were one of those many lost missions that another team would happen upon when the heat died down.

Watch out for whatever this thing is. It doesn't feel right.

"Compared to everything else?" He said, waiting for another set of green eyes.

And if it was a hunter.........

Then wasn't that just keeping in line with who he was?

He fired and the green lights flickered and vanished.

Something slashed at him from behind, causing him to turn over, but just as soon as it came, it was gone around.

Circling.

The fresh bandage held, and the runes lit properly this time. Noah took a deep, relieved breath, waited for Al to open his eyes, and said, "I thought I told you to be careful." There was more worry than actual scold in his tone, though.

Maebe rolled her eyes at the 'announcement', and ran a hand across her face. She was so tired of all of this. "Christ, we're fine. I just need to talk to you for a second. When is that a crime? You told me if I needed to talk, you'd be there. So I'm like, oh hey, I need to talk. For like, a second." Her hands extended out in a 'tada' position.

"Is that really the biggest deal?"

Now that Al was awake, Noah attended to helping clean off blood and ichor, and taping and bandaging his injuries. His hands were quick and proficient; he'd been good at first aid before, and infirmary duties had improved his basic skills even further.
