Whatever he expected, it wasn't this. Standing at the doorway was a small girl, looking to be Daniel's age - no, older, but not by much. Despite that, she had an expressionless face that was framed by her black hair and emphasized by her dark blue eyes. Perhaps it was because of her blue eyes, but she looked like Fredrich.
The girl stared at Ellery for a moment then looked down the hallway. "You're not him," she mumbled. There was a suitcase next to her, a backpack over her shoulders, and a note held tightly in her small hand.

The girl briefly looked at him, then back down the hallway, blatantly ignoring him. Did she get the wrong room? She looked down at the envelope. No, this was right, so why...?
Spotting movement out of the corner of his eye, Fredrich glanced over to see Ellery at the door with a child. He raised an eyebrow then closed the laptop, setting it and his headphones down before striding towards the door. "A playmate for Daniel?" he asked.
The girl looked at the new person, her eyes widening slightly at the giant. For a second she almost showed emotion, but instead she took a step forward and grabbed onto the man's untucked button-up, tugging on it. "Hello, Daddy," she greeted stoically.
Fredrich stared at the child for a moment. Did he hear that right? Daddy? He slowly closed the door and lead her to the kitchen table. "Ellery, can you get her something to drink while I figure this out?" he asked, the girl still clinging to his shirt.

The closer Ellery got, the more the girl stepped away until she was hiding behind Fredrich's legs.
"It seems your magic charm with children won't work on this one," the detective chuckled as he grabbed the envelope, the girl letting go as soon as he touched it.

Fredrich stared at the paper for a very long time, even when he was done reading it. Was this divine justice for rejecting Ellery's dream? Or was it the personification of his sins here to haunt him? He exhaled slowly through his nose and got up. "... Charlotte, was it?" he muttered, the girl looking up at him in response. "I need you to stay here while I talk to... Ellery." The girl nodded and sat down. Fredrich looked over at the songwriter and motioned for him to follow him to their bedroom.

Fredrich passed around, running his gloved fingers through his hair. He sighed then turned to look at Ellery. Despite his stoic expression, he seemed to be nervous.
"Roughly eight years ago I was out for a hit. It brought me to a very shady part of the town I was in, and the person I was asked to target was a... a mess of a man. He was this frail crack addict that, upon meeting me, begged me for money, telling me he'd have sex with me or do whatever I want. I was still young and I let my feelings cloud my work, so instead of instantly killing him I tried to take care of him. I ended up developing feelings for him and stayed for a few months. During that time, I met his sister. She was an addict, too, but unlike her brother she made no attempt at getting better. She was crazy and violent, I had to physically restrain her several times or I was convinced she'd try to kill her brother.
"One night while I tried to sleep, she got on top of me. I tried to get her off, but she told me that if I did she'd scream and tell her brother that I tried to rape her. I felt like I had no options, so I let her do what she wanted. The next day I left.
"I never knew she had a child. I should have suspected - I probably did but ignored it. It wasn't until last year, when I was requested a hit on her. While I aimed, I spotted a child that resembled me near her. I waited for the child to go to school before firing."
Fredrich stopped, running his fingers through his hair once more and sitting down at the edge of the bed, waiting for Ellery to respond.

A long arm stretched out, closing the door next to Ellery. "You have to talk to me," Fredrich said while leaning over the song writer. "I know this is completely new. You're playing just as big a role as I am in this. If you want her gone then I'll find someone to take her in."

Fredrich sighed and leaned away from the door, letting Ellery go.
Charlotte looked down the hallway when she heard the door open, watching the two step out. Her father look significantly less happy, and that smaller man looked different as well. Coming up with her own conclusion, she hopped off the seat and walked up to Ellery, standing in front of him and giving him a cold glare. "Do not be mean to my Daddy," she warned, inheriting Fredrich's icy tone.

Left alone with his daughter - something he was convinced he'd never get used to saying - Fredrich sat down and motioned for her to sit next to him. "Let's start with you telling me all about yourself," he started.
