"I realize that," Timaeus assured Lin, "but I have spoken to my parents, and they have agreed to keep their eyes open to look for anyone they might recognize. River is eager for stories of the rescues from all points of view, they know this."

"I have to admit," Earendil spoke up, "it would be interesting ..."

"It would be," Lin had to agree.

When she visited she had only seen the aftermath and never asked as a child what the hunts were like.

"It would be neat if we did meet some of the former children...."

"Be sure to tell us how they're doing, if you see any of them," Timaeus requested with a smile. "We're all curious. I know Elrohir said it before, but it still holds true for all of us today: there's a sense of satisfaction knowing that we've saved some lives, but there's a sense of contentment when we know that those people whose lives we saved have grown up into people with families or lives of their own."

Earendil smiled and nodded as he ate. "The way it's nice for us to go back to lands we've visited and see how things have changed," he murmured.

Lin smiled at Earendil's comment, she knew which place exactly he had been talking about.

"Will do, I'm sure Dad would also like to know. He doesn't like people to know, but he's soft inside."

She should know after all, she was his daughter.

Alyse laughed at that comment. "Come on, anyone who's seen him with your mother knows what a softy he can be," she grinned. "Neko and Nako have told us stories about the first time your parents were here - everyone knows he's a softy."

Of course, most people didn't know that he had been acting that way because he was in a world he had thought he would never visit again, but it didn't change the fact that he had been very physically close with Kara. Ulani and Ulrich had commented on that, and on how Kara had seemed surprised by it at first, too.

"Everyone here," Lin laughed in turn.

She supposed when she thought about it, it was hard to imagine her father the way everyone here knew him back home. True, inside the grounds he was, the way most people knew him. Soft... he loved his family and his wife.

"I think, he's very easy going when he's here compared to when he's working outside the grounds back home. Well, at least more easy going since he still tries, sort of."

"That sounds like Aragost," Jasmine spoke up, her expression thoughtful as she passed a dish to her sister. "At times he seems so cold, so distant ... but to those who try to get to know him, he is very kind and warm."

"And not just to the Aldrich family," River grinned. "To everyone who isn't an idiot!"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 11, 2010 2:27 pm

Lin chuckled at that, Jasmine had a point.

"I hadn't thought of it that way, but that's a good point. I think the way he sometimes acts around those he doesn't know that well is probably something left from before he met mom. At least that's what Yukito thinks..."

Certainly she knew her father's family was uptight, with the exception of Long, but her grandfather was a bit weird.

"Not that any of us present would know about that," Earendil spoke up. "None of us knew him before he was with your mother."

Brook was eating in silence, but it was clear from the way her eyes were flickering from one speaker to the next that she was listening very intently.

"How did your parents meet, anyways?" River asked, curious.

"That is actually a story that is completely up to debate among the siblings," Lin admitted.

She had thought she knew the story exactly growing up, but it turned out it be slightly more complicated than that (and she had gotten the censored version as a child).

"The official story is that before any of us were born, back when Mom and Dad were barely adults, Mom had met Dad during her travels. Rather, Dad had gotten hurt and she found him, how he managed to do that I'm not completely sure, only that he was hurt and she convinced a friend of hers to help her get him to the inn she was staying at and nurse him back to health. Mom, was a wanderer at one point, so when he became well enough that she wasn't needed she left to continue her journey."

She paused a bit and continued.

"Years later after Mom adopted about half of the current siblings I have now, Dad waltzes back into her life. Apparently claiming that he was her assistant, as Mom had a lot of children and was one of the two heads of the school. The funny thing is no one remembers hiring him."

Mainly because no one had hired him, but that little aspect of her parents' story they didn't really need to know. It weirded her out at times.

"The really interesting thing, and the reason why no one can agree on how they met is that Dad's father, and Mom's father, knew each other very well. Mom's father well... Grandfather Daemon got sealed into a sword somehow when she was really little so some people wonder if maybe the two had maybe met as children and not as young adults..."

River was utterly fascinated. "And they don't even remember if they met when they were children?" she asked, tilting her head curiously. "Though I suppose if they were very young they wouldn't remember ... just like I don't remember things that happened when I was little. I guess that makes sense."

"Which makes me think," Timaeus mused, "some of the children that we rescued ... they might not even remember any of it. Most of them were old enough to remember, but some of them were so young they might not."

"It wouldn't surprise me," Lin admitted with a nod, "I know some of them were very young."

She did remember the children from the times she had been visiting Haven as a child.

"It's hard to tell though with something like what they've been through."

The whole experience was certainly traumatizing enough and those types of experiences tended to last a long while.

"But sometimes, if the experience is traumatizing enough, the mind erases it entirely," Timaeus countered. "Look at Shael."

"She's not the only one," Alyse added. "Even Shiara's memory of her captivity has begun to fade - or so she claims at least."
PostPosted: Sat Dec 11, 2010 6:59 pm

Shael, Lin recalled was the most extreme case because Shael didn't even remember who she was or where she came from.

"Beginning to fade is different from just blocking it out, but I do see your point," she nodded at Timaeus.

"Either way, it's going to be interesting," Earendil smiled. "Considering everything ... going to different countries with the diversity of races and backgrounds that we have ... I think this is going to be fun."

He grinned.
