They can even make up words too. I wanted to know what the french word for Hilarious was in french and since I did free translation it came up with "Hilarant" which isn't a real word. So I looked it up in my dictionary and got a totally different word which was correct.

Hilarant actually IS a real word ^^ and guess what... It means hilarious... xd What was the word you looked up in the dictionary?

Yay! This is a very random post, but it's quite exciting: I don't know about anywhere else, but in New Zealand at the moment it's International Languages Week! And today at our school it's german day, so this is going to be heaps of fun.. Viel Spass! mrgreen

A request for all German speakers.
I've stumbled across someone who wants to get a tattoo in German, and naturally doesn't speak a word of it.

They were planning on 'verdreht' for 'twisted' in the Englisch sense, as in warped, kinky, perverse, werid, etc. I'm pretty sure that doesn't work, though, and all the books I've checked agree with me. What would be the appropriate word for that usage? Is there a really good translation, or should they be looking for something else?

·:"Verdreht" works. But it's a shame that he's getting a tattoo in a language he knows nothing about...
That's always pissed me off.

Anyway, I hope he means "twisted" as in like "perverse" or "distorted".

If he's going more for "crazy" then he should ger "verrückt" or something.

"Verdreht" /can/ work for people but I think it sounds a bit odd... I'm not native so I couldn't tell you for sure though.

Verrückt ist ein spitze Wort! =D

But not in that case. I just happen to like it. =)

I really like the way that Geman sounds, it has some sound to it that I cannot help but love. I have not studdied it formaly yet. It might be something fun to get into eventually. Many people do not know why I like the way it sounds, they say that it is an 'evil' language for some reason or another. I like some German bands too.

They say it's 'evil' because they're all shown videos of Adolf Hitler's (who spoke in a harsh tone, fueled by dictatorial fury) speech when learning about the Holocaust, and none of them want anything to do with Germans after learning about all that.

Ironic, isn't it... that while they teach (through the example of Hitler) that it's wrong to hate someone based on their heritage, they forget to mention that it's also wrong to hate to people of German blood based on theirs. Sickening.

Year one German seemed to have a lot of neo-nazi idiots, and a fair number of people obsessed with certain bands. Those all seem to wash out after the first year or two, though.

I didn't think it was, but it's just sad that that IS a reason why some learn German.

Glad to have yet another person who's actually interested in the language and not the dark history surrounding the native speakers' past dictators. If you want to at least look into it, I found that http://ielanguages.com was a pretty informative site for German... not to mention a bunch of other Indo-European languages as well.

Actually, apart from the fact that German is regarded as the hardest language to learn out of our options at my school, a lot of people don't learn German because of the association with Nazis and whatnot.

Not many people seem to like German in my school. Even in my German class, most people took it because the teachers are laid-back.

You must live in a very different area, friend. I even had a teacher once say, while reading the book Night, "Those German bastards!" (not 'Nazi bastards', but 'German bastards'). Of course, he was a Jew, but still. I didn't find that extraordinarily professional of a sophomore English teacher.

I live in England if that makes any more sense... 3nodding

I'm not really sure what you're saying though. Are you saying it's good that people know the distinction between Germans and Nazis? Or am I completely missing the point?
