Cody was whomped in the head with the crowbar, and fell to his knees. He couldn't think. The carport was spinning. He tried to catch sight of Dari but all he saw was a blur and then a fist.

Cody was stunned. There was too much blood. This was bad. Cody was fragile and easily broken, just a simple human with simple systems. Dari roared and turned. He smacked one guy in the head with his own head. He bit his ear hard enough to draw blood. He wasn't sure how much damage he had done, but he tasted the blood. He kicked the other in the groin, then stepped hard on the inside of his foot. One of them weakened. With his arm free, he sent a flurry of punches, tweaked an arm, stomped another insole, and then fell forward and folded over Cody, head over head, arms around his front, using his body to shield any future blows, and they came. He felt feet and metal and heat and blood and pain. He didn't want to scream, though. He didn't want Cody to hear it from him before he blacked out, if he was still here. Didn't these people know they could kill a guy like that?!

The last thing Cody was aware of was Dari's warmth against his body. He wanted to do something. To tell Dari not to be stupid. To run. Instead, he passed out.

Sirens. Beautiful, blessed sirens. The men scattered and sprinted to get away. The police were more concerned with Dari and Cody. Dari was panting, tears seeping from his eyes, as they pulled him to his feet. Cody wasn't moving. Wasn't responding. The crying got worse.
"Tell me he isn't dead," Dari said. The paramedics came out to work on Cody. Dari slumped in the policemen's grip.
"He's not dead, he's not dead," the paramedics said too late for Dari's liking.
Dari signed, bent double, and retched again. There was nothing to come up with the biology he had, but he was gagging nonetheless. A paramedic came to him and reached up to inspect his head wound. Dari nearly batted him away, but he knew better. Don't hit the law enforcement.
"Who is this man to you?" one of the cops asked.
"My boyfriend," Dari breathed, and then, "Special Agent D. Aikley. I want you to find these assholes."
"That's our job, Sir."
In a flurry of movement, they were moved into the ambulance, and Dari stared at Cody and his slowly rising and falling chest even as his own body bled and ached and the cop in the back with them questioned him.

There were tests to run, stitches to be tied, bones to be checked, and it was a while before Dari was able to pull out his phone. he felt tight, what with all of the bandages and stitching. The doctor has said they could see his skull, but a lack of horror in the woman's voice told him it wasn't black ooze. She'd said she was amazed he wasn't more hurt. He wasn't, no, but Cody was.
He sat by Cody's bedside and rang Toby.
Toby was snuggling with Maia and watching TV. He had expected the boys home or some call that Dari was staying over, and he figured this was it. He reached around Maia to grab his phone and answered.
"Hey."
"Toby." Dari's voice twisted with his heart. He felt like he was going to cry again.
"Oh, God. What's wrong?" Toby shot to his feet.

Maia stood, taking Toby's free hand. What could've happened? They'd said they were going to dinner, but it was later then they'd expected to hear from them... "Are they alright?" she asked.
Cody was beginning to stir. His hand opened and closed reflexively and then, slowly, his eyes opened.

"I don't know," Toby said quickly to Maia, and then turned his attention back to the phone, "Dari?"
But Cody was waking up, and that was what held Dari's attention at the moment. He smiled and stroked an unbruised portion of Cody's hand.
"Baby. Hey, love. Hey." he was sniffling. He hit the Call Nurse button. They had wanted to talk to Cody when he woke up.
"DARI?!"
"Sorry, sorry," Dari said into the phone, "Some guys beat us up."
"What?!"
"Like... four or five guys? When we left after dinner, they... I think it was a hate crime?"
"Holy s**t, Dari," Toby said, and then to Maia: "They're alright." His voice said otherwise.

Cody tried grasping Dari's hand with his. "Love," he managed. "You're okay." His thoughts were still jumbled, but that had been the foremost thought. Dari was okay. Hurt. But He was alive. He was still here.
Maia wasn't convinced by Toby's tone. She reached for the phone. "Where are they?" she asked. "Let's go." Whatever had happened, it had to be bad. Had to be, the way Toby was reacting.

Dari smiled broadly. "Yeah, I'm fine." He stroked Cody's hand as gently as he could, and he heard Maia ask where they were. He named the hospital to her.
"Alright, we'll be right there," Toby said, hearing the response. "Some guys beat them up." He was putting on his shoes already and grabbing his keys.
"I'm go glad you're awake, Love," Dari said then to Cody, "I'm so glad, and I'm so sorry."

"Someone beat them up?!" Maia echoed, horrified. She couldn't believe that. Why would someone want to hurt sweet people like those two? She put on her shoes. "Do you know where the hospital is?" she asked.
Cody's eyelids fluttered for a moment, it took a while for him to respond. "Don't be sorry. S'all my fault."

"Yeah," Toby said, and he opened the door for Maia to follow. "Come on."
"It's nobody's fault but theirs," Dari said, "I just wish you hadn't been there. I mean--" He sighed. "You know what I mean." He leaned forward and kissed Cody's forehead carefully. "I'm glad you're okay." Mostly okay.

Maia followed after Toby quickly.
"Wish we hadn't been there," Cody corrected, softly. "Wouldn't have left you. Love you."
A nurse came in then, noticed Cody was awake and went to check his vitals on screen. "Do you think you can answer questions?" Though the words were seemingly addressed to Cody, she looked to Dari as if expecting him to answer. "When did he wake up?"

Dari smiled. "I love you too." He was making sense at least.
When the nurse came in, Dari offered her a shrug. "He's speaking in shortened sentences, but--" He thought a moment. "He's been awake for a minute, maybe. I hit the button as soon as he opened his eyes." He hadn't been counting. He didn't think it was all that important. "I spoke to the police all about this..." Maybe he could save Cody from having to recount it?

Cody blinked at the nurse, and he looked for Dari. "Questions?" he echoed. He wanted to go home! He hated hospitals. The white sterile rooms. The smell.
"I think they wanted both accounts," the nurse mused.

Dari's brows raised. He was unamused.
"Our accounts will be the same. I have an eidetic memory. I gave them descriptions of the men,I told them precisely who struck when, and he was unconscious for the end of it. They've gotten photos of all of my wounds, why do they want to question him? Shouldn't you be more concerned about concussions or brain damage?"
