The Gaia wedding system will take place within a flash program, just like towns and the games. It will be unique, and made specifically for the purpose. The "love" building will re-open, housing both a chapel where you apply for the ceremony and a wedding shop.
The new shop would provide wedding dresses, tuxedos, and accessories. There will be lots of different styles of wedding gear, from fairy tale to goth, to traditional wear from different cultures (like wedding kimono). EVERYTHING will be unisex, so girls can wear tuxes and bois can wear frilly princess dresses. There will also be items to decorate your house with for the wedding reception, like wedding cakes, balloons, and flower garland that hangs on the walls.
The whole system would be gender neutral, so anybody can get married to anybody they choose. It won't bother checking for gender, and will use a gender-neutral ending (instead of "I now pronounce you man and wife" they'll say something else). When you apply for a marriage license, you pay a reasonable fee that will be refunded to you if the wedding doesn't go through properly (like a bid in the marketplace). You simply type in your fiancee's user name, choose a setting for your wedding (for example, you might want to get married in the non-denominational chapel, the gazebo outside of barton, in Gambino's mansion...), write your own vows (which the NPC pastor will read), and a password if you'd like your wedding room to be password protected. Once you submit it, your fiancee will be prompted with a private message, and taken to a screen where they can confirm these settings (it will bounce back and fourth like a trade if you can't both decide) and write vows of their own. Or cancel it. You can also fill out a form to send out invitations to friends.
Once the details are set, it will save your settings and link you to the wedding window, which will load them. There will be the option of chatting with speech bubbles like in towns, except everyone will be unable to move. You and your fiancee will walk down the isle and do various actions when prompted like a FMV in a game that uses sprites, and your guests will be seated in chairs (cleverly designed so you can't see their lower halves, so only the back-of-the-head sprite is used).
The pastor will go on about the regular wedding stuff and read the vows. He'll ask each one of you in turn if you do, and it will prompt you with a special message that has the option to click "I do!" or "I don't!". If you say "I do!" then the wedding continues, if you say "I don't!" then there's a dramatic set of dialogue (you're given the chance to explain yourself through normal chatting) and the pastor will ask you if you're joking. You're given the options "I was kidding, I do!" or "No!". First one continues the wedding, second one ends it for good. Your fiancee is given the same chance, and then the pastor will ask "is there any reason blah blah blah speak now or forever hold your peace..." all of your guests are prompted with a "stop the wedding!" button, that will only stay there for about 15 seconds. If anybody clicks it, the wedding is temporarily halted with more dramatic dialogue, everyone's given the chance to explain themselves, and both fiancees have the option of continuing or stopping the wedding.
Everyone can chat and emote at every point in the wedding, so there's no restriction in role playing. The prompts just make the NPC react and make the thing official.
Once it's time for the happy couple to kiss, their avatars will move close to each other so their faces are about touching, and a special kissing emote will appear over their heads. With much fanfare, the wedding ends.
The "game" will send data back to Gaia to make the marriage official. You'll get a marriage certificate that will be displayed in your profile and on your user-page with a certain option, and also a wedding photo that's also displayed. The wedding photo is basically a special saved avatar that looks like a polaroid, displaying you and your spouse wearing the clothes you wore during the ceremony, with the alter in the background.
Also, You and the people who went to your wedding get a small gift to commemorate the event. It might be something like a silver clock, picture frame, or candle to display in your house, or something really cool like a set of wedding bubbles where you can hold the wand in your hand and the bottle in the other, and bubbles will surround your avi. Sure, it will make everyone want to be in a wedding just for a free item, but the market will soon be saturated with them, like starter set clothes.
Of course, with weddings, there must be divorces. The divorce system is a fairly simple process. You just go to the place you applied for the marriage license and click the "I want a divorce!" option. It will ask you if you're REALLY sure, warning you that it will erase all records of your marriage, delete your marriage license and wedding photo (you can right-click save both), plus possibly cause internet drama. If you click yes again, it will send a PM to your spouse and say that you have one week for the divorce to be finalized, with the option of canceling the divorce at any time. This will allow you to get divorced to someone who's left Gaia permanently, while preventing people from going on mass marriage/divorce sprees like some kind of internet vegas. Once the divorce is finalized, you can get married again (even to the same person, if you just did it to redo your wedding photo with a nicer set of clothing).
