Cody smiled and started smoothing lotion on Dari's cheeks. "There. Now your pretty face won't get all red and painful." He wiped the excess sunscreen off on his ice cream napkin, taking another bite of his cone. "After working with kids, you really start to see how weird adults are."

Dari opened his mouth to talk about Kevin, then closed it. No, that was a bridge better crossed when they had to get to it, like if Kevin was over their house some day when he and Cody were visiting.
"Kids can be weird too. I've met a lot of weird people. Here, let me get you?" He took another bite of his ice cream and then offered to trade it.

It had been a rather nice evening, actually. Dari had thought the bar would be too loud, but it was fairly well dulled by the wall between the pub proper and the dining area. They had to cross through the bar to get back outside but Dari paid it no mind as he took Cody's hand and headed for the street, grinning at his love.
"That was good, right?" Worth the drive for sure.

"It was!" Cody happily agreed. He hadn't expected something so delicious to be served at a place like this. "We should come here again. Maybe bring Lori and Luca." He swayed their hands and looked to Dari. "I liked the drive, too."

"We should!" They were out on the sidewalk now, walking toward the parking garage they'd had to use. "I'm not usually a fan of bar food, but that was excellent."

Cody kissed Dari's cheek. "I'm glad we came," he said. "I was skeptical, but the food was great." And spending time with Dari was even better! "Do you think we'll find the car?" he asked, teasingly.

"Me too," Dari agreed, and then just chuckled and tapped his temple. Of course they'd find the car! He could also tell you the other cars in the same line parked around it!
"HEY, FAGS!"
What. Dari stiffened. "Keep walking." They were still far enough away to be avoided. At the moment, at least.

Cody's grip on Dari's hand tightened, and his pace quickened. "C'mon, love," he muttered. He wanted to get to the car, head home.

Dari picked up the pace to match Cody's.
"HEY, I'M TALKING TO YOU!"
Nope. Keep on going. At least until one of them jogged around the front. Dari dropped Cody's hand so as to not draw any more ire and held his hands up.
"We don't want any trouble. We're just going home."
The man in front of them wrinkled his lip like Elvis. Ah, ********. There wasn't even a safe place to put Cody. They were on both sides.

They hadn't reached the car in time. ********. They didn't even have pepper spray or something to defend themselves with. "We just want to go home," he echoed Dari's statement.
Another guy showed up, arms crossed.

Dari watched the new guy come. This would be much easier if he could be in alien form. He could at least watch them all.
Then it happened. The tension snapped and the man to cross over initially struck out at Cody. Dari caught his arm and twisted it back, then socked the guy in the jaw. He was well trained. As a second came from behind he turned and struck out with a foot. He hadn't thought he needed to bring his gun to dinner for god's sake!

It wasn't long before one of the guys recognized that Cody wasn't fighting. The guy went up behind Cody and grabbed him by the hair. "Here, guys!" he called. "I'll hold this one still!"
Cody tried to turn and ended up wincing. Pulling against your own hair hurt!

NOPE. Dari turned and caught a fist to the jaw for his troubles. He ignored it and the blood now brimming in his gums. The radiating pain was nothing for the fear that his love was going to be just held down and beaten. He gritted his teeth, his face twisted into uncharacteristic ire and he hit the man holding Cody in the elbow, then socked him in the face. He was going for the temple, for that perfect knock-out spot, but it was harder when you were surrounded.
One of their attackers laughed, and Dari saw him reel back with a crowbar. His eyes went wide a moment and he reached up to catch the bar, but it hit him first, slammed down on his forearm, then raised again to smack against his skull and gash his scalp. It hurt. It hurt like a b***h, but he had no brain. He wouldn't black out.

Cody elbowed the guy behind him, once free, eyes wide as he looked to Dari. "Oh my god," he fretted, looking around as if expecting help to arrive. He socked a guy in the cheek, and then had to duck to avoid being punched in return. He didn't know what to do. He wasn't trained to fight. He got a punch in the jaw and another in the eye.

They were catching on. Two of them came up behind Dari and held him by the arms.
"Damnit!" Dari yelled. Running was bad, or he'd tell Cody to do so. It was strange, how his instincts told him to do that. He got socked in the gut and retched, something he'd never felt before, and cried out when he got a kick in the groin. He yelled then, in rage, and tried to struggle free. They laughed. The ******** laughed, and he saw one raise the crowbar against Cody.
"NO! ******** YOU!" He couldn't do anything else.
