I'm guessing Empress gave them some of her power. The eye of ekron use to belong to a GL so it has some green light energy properties. Energy deflecting energy and all.

Shoulda figured. Putz can't even stick around to defend his girl. Useless. I wouldn't even recommend the Empress bother to acquire him. Hardly worth the effort.
