"The P*DA sounds like a better tool than this T.A.D.S.," Zero said, looking down at his own T.A.D.S. It showed him a display of upcoming meetings, but not much else. "Perhaps the settings on mine just need to be changed a bit," he muttered. He turned to the left, and opened the doors to the spacious mess hall. After scanning the daily selection, he settled on a large citrus, sending out his Charmander to join in on the meal. The Charmander immediately scurried over to the desert section, grabbed a handful of Lava Cookies, and munched away.

Shaydas contented himself with a sub sandwich and a bottle of water. "Looks like I'm the only one who doesn't bring his Pokémon with him everywhere," he observed, watching the Charmander chow down on some cookies. He sat across the table from Zero and examined his sandwich. After a second, he scoffed. "Onions?" he said in disgust. "Happens every time I eat out. They always put onions on my food." He fell to picking the onions off of his sub...

"Well, I got used to the Countess being here for me, and I usually try to give my Pokémon some free time out of the room, seeing how I'm cooped up in there so often." He peeled the skin off the large orange and disposed of it, offering the Countess a slice. "Come to think of it, most of the Aqua members have at least one Pokémon with them at all times. Maybe they like the company, or perhaps they just don't let their Pokémon roam free all the time. Some treat Pokémon as pets, and thus let out their companions at their convenience." He stopped, lost in thought.

"I suppose that's the thing with Trainers. In the end, perhaps at a subconscious level, we enjoy the command over our friends. I don't let my Pokémon out of their balls due to space issues in my room, but here, I have no excuse." He paused, biting into the orange. Zero's gaze turned to Shaydas. "I assume your Pokémon are always out of their balls?"

Shaydas thought for a moment, his purple eyes fixed on the Countess. "I guess I've just gotten used to the idea of being a Pokémon," he said thoughtfully, "so I try to see things from their perspective. Pokémon are my closest friends, even more than almost all humans. I probably get that from being both a Trainer and a Pokémon." The Lucario looked at Zero and continued, "To answer your question, I rarely keep my team in their Pokéballs. They are at my hideout in Phenac City when I come here... usually." He bit into his sandwich, then opened it again to pull out another onion.

Zero nodded, assuming that to be the case with this strange hybrid.

"Well, for a long time, I had lived out on my own, without the company of either human or Pokémon. I was comfortable with the solitary life, I guess. Then I found a young Zubat in my home, acting as if it had always lived there. I was originally uncaring for the new visitor, but over time, we became close friends. I have yet to put the Countess in a Pokéball, but I suppose I should, just so someone else doesn't claim ownership and use her for their own gains." He looked down to his Pokéballs within the cloak. "I'm still getting used to the concept of having more than just one companion by my side, to be honest."

"Strange things happen all over the place it seems," Shaydas noted. "I used to live in Agate Village when I was a child. I had a pretty good life going for myself; loving parents, good friends, a nice home. My folks were talking about getting me a Pokémon for my birthday so I could be like my brother, who was a Trainer. I also had this strange ability to see Aura, so I felt more like a Pokémon than a kid sometimes." Shaydas examined his bottle of water for a second, remembering his childhood. After a second of silence, he continued, "On my thirteenth birthday, though, I woke up as a Lucario. It was too much for my family to handle, I guess. They threw me out that day and went on like they only had one kid. I hitched a ride to the east and never looked back. I drifted from place to place for about six years, eventually ending up in Phenac. I heard about Team Aqua and joined, hoping to find someone who would accept me. They gave me a Pokémon and registered me as a Trainer. I kinda owe the Team a lot for helping me out."

"We all have our own reasons for joining Team Aqua. This place has been surprisingly accepting with plenty of people, regardless of their... standings in society," Zero said, thinking of the many different species that called Aqua HQ their home. He laughed. "Don't worry, the only Trainers who stick out here are the ones who are normal," he joked, reminding himself that the majority of Team Aqua's members weren't purely human.

"Yeah," Shaydas laughed. "The only ones that--" He was cut off when a Pokéball flew at the back of his head, causing him to face plant right into his sandwich. The Lucario reached blindly about for the Pokéball, not lifting his face from the table. When his paw settled on it, he picked it up and jumped up from his seat. "WHO THREW THIS?!" he demanded. Several Aquans pointed at one Peon who tried to shrink down and avoid notice. Shaydas threw the Ball back at him with enough speed and accuracy that a major league pitcher would be proud. The Pokéball hit the peon squarely in the forehead, knocking him out cold. Other Aquans gathered around the KO'd peon while Shaydas sat down again and examined his ruined sandwich.

Zero glared at the peon who threw the Pokéball. Shaking his head to keep the welling rage to himself, his head turned to Shaydas. "You really do get that a lot, don't you?" he asked, keeping his voice calm despite his anger at the law-breaking, simple-minded Aqua peon. The Countess, upon seeing the empty Pokéball, zoomed to the safety of Zero's hood and remained there, hidden from sight. The Charmander ignored the whole event, moving on to the cakes.

"It happens at least once a week," Shaydas sighed. "I think there's also a Shuckle that's out to get me, but that's a different story entirely." He wiped his face off with a napkin and laughed, brushing off the event. He pulled out an Ultra Ball on a chain from his bag and put it around his neck. He cleaned up the demolished sandwich and came back to the table with a slice of cake, much to the Charmander's chagrin.

Treecko crawled around on the ceiling. He had stolen a broken Pokeball. He was just above Shaydas and dropped it on his head, quickly moving away. This way, he couldn't easily be accused.

Charmander grumbled, grabbing a plate full of brownies instead. He ran to Zero's table and hid underneath, and loud munching sounds were heard from below the table.

Zero took another orange and peeled it slowly, momentarily lost in thought. The Countess shifted in the cloak, pulling out yet another candy. The hooded Trainer looked away from his orange and stared at his surroundings. How different from his home!

He downed the orange in a few bites, and stood. "Well, I think I'll return to my room. Plenty left to do, and I think I'm done eating for now." He glanced under the table, grinning at the Charmander. "Care to leave a piece for me?" A brownie was flung into Zero's face, and the Countess laughed. Scipio, the Charmander, was known for his falsely rude antics. Zero brushed off crumbs from his face and recalled the Charmander. After stretching, he turned to face Shaydas once more.

"I guess I'll be seeing you later, then. Good-bye, Shaydas." He glanced up at the quickly retreating Treeko. "I suppose that Treeko wants to poke some fun at you, as well."

The broken Pokéball bounced painfully off Shaydas' head and onto his slice of cake. The Lucario stared at the ball, seething with rage at whoever threw another Pokéball at him. He picked up the ball and hurled it at a random person, knocking the grunt out. "This is getting annoying," Shaydas fumed. He looked in the reflection on the table and saw Rex's Treecko. He looked up and said, "You've got horrid timing, you know that?" he sighed, realizing who really hit him with the ball.

"I get that a lot." Treecko snickered. He crawled off to find something that would entertain him.

Shaydas salvaged as much of the cake as he could, stopping to laugh at the message on the plate. "You've just eaten a lie," he read aloud. He put the plate away and went to the common room to watch the news.
