"After eight years of being blind, I was more or less used to it," Serenity went on, smiling faintly. "I had Mother and Papa, and there was one or two members of the staff that would speak to me without being told to do so ... I mean, it wasn't fun, but I survived. I was all right. And then one day, I met an assassin who had been ordered to murder the entire royal family."

Kara blinked, though she wasn't horrified at the thought, it was just a kind of feeling, that or she was hanging around Donovan too much.

"You did?" she tilted her head.

Serenity nodded, uncertain how to continue. Bah, straightforward would be best.

"It was Garrick," she said simply. She looked at Kara to see what her reaction might be.

Kara blinked and scratched the back of her head, "But wait.. I thought you were related to the Aldriches by marriage," she tilted her head confused not at all distrubed by the fact Garrick was an assassin.

Afterall look at Donovan!

Serenity actually laughed at that. "I am," she giggled. "Atalya is my mother-in-law, Amalthea my sister-in-law ... Riordan's dead, just as Garrick is ..." She paused, then explained: "Garrick and Riordan were twins. Garrick was the elder, but they were twins ... but ..."

She paused again.

"Perhaps I should continue chronologically," she sighed. "It might make more sense that way."

Kara blinked a bit confused, why did she have a feeling it wasn't going to be a happy story? There was also something about Garrick that tugged the back of her mind...

Serenity noticed Kara's look - how could she not? Had she not after all trained herself to read people's faces, and been able to sense long before that when people were feeling different emotions? Blindness wasn't all bad, after all.

"I've confused you," she said in an apologetic tone. "Is there something you want to ask?"

"Wasn't it somewhat chronological to begin with?" Kara inquired.

Except for the jumping ahead to about her having in-laws and all that, but that was normal, after all, she kind of knew how the story ended.

"Pretty much," Serenity smiled. "I found out Garrick was supposed to assassinate the Aldriches, which of course he didn't tell me at first, but he told me also that ... despite his orders, he couldn't do it. He felt some strange ... attraction to them, he knew them somehow."

She shrugged. "He was the sweetest person I knew - the only one who would still speak to me after finding out how I became blind ... even after he discovered I was a shapeshifter, he was the best ... and once he discovered that the Aldriches were his family, he turned away from them because of the way they had treated me."

She laughed softly. "Of course, as you can tell, they came to accept me ... most of them." She smiled, but it was sad. "Except Riordan, which is why both he and Garrick are dead now. But ... you can see now why I said I can understand how different people from the same family can be? Garrick and Riordan especially ... polar opposites."

Kara mused on this, thinking about it as she nodded. Though she would have never imagined anyone being that different.

"Yea, that would come as a large shock," Kara murmured, "It wasn't that bad when I found out about Donovan and Uncle Long, though Donovan was a bit miffed that he didn't know about the connection."

Donovan tended to get miffed about lack of information in general.

Serenity averted her eyes. "Yes ... well ... Garrick ended up killing the man who had raised him," she murmured.

And in a more barbaric manner than most people were killed. Not that it had been his fault; on the contrary, the man had deserved it a thousand times over ...

"Well since I'm sure it was something extreme that caused Garrick to be raised away from his family I can see that," Kara replied softly, she looked up at Serenity again.

Wondering what the older woman was thinking.

Serenity glanced down at Kara and actually started laughing softly.

"Yes, that's a mild way of putting it," she agreed amiably. "Considering the man was responsible for the death of every family member for nine generations, plus was continually trying to hire someone to kill Atalya, and had stolen Garrick away from his family at only ... I think ten weeks of age ..."

And tried to kill Serenity. Had actually made her bleed ... Her hand went to her throat, to an inch-long horizontal scar right at the front.

"A very deep seated grudge," Kara mused, "Hard to believe something like that would occur," but elves she supposed, were as imperfect as angels.

So she shouldn't have been surprised.

Serenity shook her head slowly. "It's the lure of power," she murmured softly. "It always is. So it was three thousand years ago, so it is today."

She shrugged. "Elves are not immune to greed or lust. Far from it: elves are drawn to beauty. Natural beauty especially ... besides other elves, gold, jewels, silver ... things that come from the earth. Nature especially ... the flowers, the trees, the mountains ... but sadly, there are those who are drawn, like humans, to man-made appearances of beauty. Power, authority ... those ones are rare, but they do exist."
