Garrett was setting up a campsite, and a shelter out of wood for Kiriianna and Rilden.
Kirianna was up in the sky making rounds around the campsite as Rilden and Garrett were on the ground. Rilden watched with a completely strait face
Garrett smiled to Rilden. "Would you gather some firewood?" He was still making the beds from moss and leaves.
Rilden nodded and lept up from the log he was on and flapped his wings and flew away. It was about five minutes before he walked back into the clearning with a heaping armful of wood "good?"
By the time Rilden came back, the beds were made. Now Garrett was digging out a fire pit. He looked at Rilden and smiled nodding. "Now would you mind finding us some medium sized rocks? We need to make a circle around this pit with them."
Rilden nodded and immidiatly flew off again before he came back with an armful of rocks and flew off again then back dumping them all in the hole before he began organizing them i na circle
Garrett smiled with pride before turning to grab some of the thickest pieces of wood that his song had gathered. When Rilden was done organizing the rocks, Garrett made up a tee-pee structure with the wood. He looked to Rilden with kind eyes. "What do you want to eat tonight for dinner?" He was picking up two pieces of wood. This process would take a long time to start a fire.
Rilden shrugged "dosn't matter" he mumbled
"Well would you like fish, deer, or rabbit?"
"fish"
Garrett was rubbing the one stick against the other between his hands to work on getting friction going. "Alright. Would you like to come fishing with me?"
"sure" he mumbled looking up to where his mom was flying around the campsite
"Would you go let mom know of our plans for dinner tonight? I don't want her to not know where we are going."
Rilden noded and launched himself up, you could see their shadows flying together for a few moments before he dove strait back to the camp site, as he landed the boy looked up at his father
Garrett smiled warmly to Rilden. "Thank you." He then saw smoke spark up from the one branch and he pushed it through the center before blowing. A nice fire slowly burned its way into existance. "We normally would use poles to fish, but since we don't have anything, we'll need to use our hands." Brushing off his own hands, Garrett stood up and smiled to Rilden before he turned and headed towards the river.
Rilden nodded and began walking beside his father to the river
"You've already shown that you know how to use your claws before. This time, you have to extend your claws, and wait with your hands in the water. And just when a fish swims between them, clamp your claws together through the fish. Understand?"
Rilden nodded and flew up over the river to a tree that was low hanging, quickly he sat down on the branch and swing down holding onto the tree by the back of his knees. Slowly he dipped his arms down to his albows in the water very slowly
Garrett watchced his son closely. He slowly entered the water's banks. Leaning over he extended his claws and lowered his claws into the water. He waited there but glanced up now and then to look at Rilden's progress.
Rilden paused for a moment before every muscle tenced in his arms and shoulders. "got one" he said in only a growl. Lifting himself up wtihout his hands rilden stood up slowly so he would kee[ his balance before flying to his father with the fish speared on his claws
Garrett smiled. "Good job, Rilden. Think you can catch another one like that?" His eyes looked down and saw the fish was drawing closer to his hands but not enough to spear it yet.
Rilden nodded but wasnt quite sure what to do with the fish now
Garrett could see the look on his face. He looked at Rilden. "Find a nice long stick and put it through the fish's mouth, all the way through. Then bring it back to the fire, and set it down and come back, okay?"
Rilden nodded and quickly flew off, before long the boy was back with his hands in the water waiting stock still for another fish
By that point Garrett managed to get a nice fish as well, and he did just as he had instructed of Rilden to do. However, he waited for his son to catch something, holding his sticked fish, and a second stick for the third fish that Rilden would have caught.
After a few more minutes and one botched attempt Rilden lept from the branch and flew over to his father with another fish. A small smile was on the boys lips as he held it to his father
Garrett smiled and took the fish, piercing through it. "You did a very good job, son. I'm proud. Let's go show your mom how well you did." He began to lead the way back to the camp.
Rilden followed beside the large lion as they made their way back to the camp where Kirianna was sitting
As they came into the camp, Garrett smiled to Kirianna and held out the fish on the stick. "Look, Rilden caught two fish on his first fishing trip." He walked over to the fire and jammed both sticks into the ground near it and then did the same with the first fish caught to let them cook. "I think our son will be a great hunter if he chooses to be."
Rilden made his way over to sit by his mom and leaning agenced her leg as he watched his father. Kirianna smiled resting a hand on Rildens shoulder "he could be a lot of things, he has talent that i havnt seen for things in a long while" she said motion for Garrett to sit on her other side
Garrett, after making sure that the fish were going to cook correctly, came over to sit on the other side of Kirianna and smiled to her as his hand came ot hold around her waist. "What do you think you would like to be when you get older, Rilden?"
Rilden shrugged looking up at Garrett with the same as always blank look on his face. Kirianna leaned lightly agenced garrett and nuzzled his shoulder lightly
Garrett kissed Kirianna's cheek and smiled to Rilden. "Well, you've lived both inside and outside. Which do you like to live more in? The forest or in a building?"
"forest" they both chimmed in
Garrett laughed and smiled brightly. "Then we shall remain here. Though I do think it would be best if we do drop into the closest town and get supplies. Rilden, there are also anthro children your age not to far from here. Wouldn't you like to meet some?"
Kirianna nodded in agreement "the closest town is the place where my friend anthros live, i have heard that there is a child there as well" she said looking over to rilden as well. Rilden blinked as he looked up between the two of them and shrugged
Garrett smiled. "Well then, we should head that way in the morning." Releasing Kirianna he moved back over to the fishkabobs and turned them to cook through the other side. He returned to his mate's side. "Wouldn't you like someone to play with, Rilden?"
Rilden again shrugged, it didn't really matter to him. Kirianna nodded in agreement "in the morning would be good"
How far is this town from here?" Garrett was nice and comfy as he rubbed Kirianna's back.
"not very far really, we are kind of in the limits of it as it is" she said nuzzling his chin lightly
Garrett smiled. "Well hopefully we can rest up there. Rilden can find a nice friend too. Friends are important, son. They are your allies should you ever have a problem, as you are allies with them too. Besides, they can be nice to have around."
Rilden nodded a little to aknowledge his father as he stared into the flames. Kirianna nodded "they are very friendly and it is all anthros"
"By that point, Hayden will be long tired of trying to find us and we can really relax." Garrett stared at his son with concern. He knew the events he must have endured were truly traumatic. He wondered how much afflicted him. The lion anthro then smiled warmly to his mate. "I hope you're hungry. The fish are almost ready."
Kirianna sniffed lightly "it smells wonderful" she said smiling softly
"You mostly have your son to thank. He helped to set up the fire as well as caught the food." Garrett moved away to grab the sticks of fish before they began to burn. He handed one stick to both Kirianna and Rilden. "Careful." Sitting again, Garrett waited for his fish to cool down a bit.
Both of them set their food to the side as Kirianna nuzzled Garrett again "thank you Rilden. you too Garrett" she said softly.
Garrett smiled warmly to Kirianna and kissed Kirianna's forehead. "Tonight I'll keep watch to make sure that no one comes to bother us. We must be prepared to leave, however should anyone show up."
Kirianna nodded a bit grimly "yes i know"
Garrett smiled warmly and nuzzled her cheek affectionately and reassuringly. He then looked to Rilden curiously. "What is the highest you can fly, Rilden?"
Rilden blinked looking up for a moment before shrugging "want me to see?"
Garrett smiled and nodded. "Lets see how high you can go. If you start having trouble breathing though, come back down okay?"
Rilden nodded before getting up. He jumped up onto a rock before taking off into a steep diagonal.
Garrett's eyes watched him with a careful gaze. He wanted to see just what his son could do and where his strengths lie.
Rilden flew agenced the wind as he flew up until he began having trouble to breath. He looked down to see if he could see his father as he drifted up a bit more since he could still breath
If Rilden could see Garrett, that was great because Garrett couldn't see him. He smiled brightly and hugged Kirianna. "He has your determination."
Rilden squinted but all he could see was a very small light where he knew the fire was. He could see other lights to his left but ignored them as he began his decent again wondering what they would say as he landed
Garrett released Kirianna to clap in applause to Rilden's return. "Good job son. You went so high I couldn't even see you." He beamed.
Rilden let a small smile come to his pale lips as he looked up at his parents. Kirianna grinned and kept her arms mostly crossed as she watched her two boys
Garrett was so proud as his tail flicked with his pride in his son. "Better get to eatting your fish. After flying up so high, you could use the energy." He kissed his mate's cheek. "You too dear." He didn't know much about flying but figured a lot of energy must have been used to do so. He picked up his own stick of fish but watched his family closely to make sure they ate.
Both Rilden and Kirianna moved over to pick up the fish, Rilden quickly began eating his while Kirianna actually took her time.
Garrett smiled to Rilden. "Hungry huh?" He took a bite of his fish but kept a close eye on Rilden and Kirianna. It was because of this he moved very slowly to eat his fish.
rilden nodded a little, not only was he hungry but he also had the urge to get the food eaten quickly
Garrett smiled brightly to him. He had only eatened two more bites before he offered the rest of his fish to him. "You'll need as much food as you can get. Here."
Rilden shook his head and pushed it back, he knew his father needed food just as much as he did
"Now, Rilden, you are still growing. You have to eat. If I get hungier later I can get something. Its fine. You must have enough strength if we have to leave later tonight instead of the morning."
Rilden shook his head shoving his hands into the pockets of his black pants refusing to take the fish
Garrett's kind expression faded into a firrm one. "Rilden, I will not have your growth stunted while we are out here. One fish is hardly enough for you to grow properly. Eat the fish, please."
Rilden shook his head again as he just stared into his fathers eyes "i'll go get another" he said before flying toword the river.
"RILDEN GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!" Roared out Garrett. It was rare for the male to actually roar. Despite him leaving his fighting days behind, to have a son disobey the simplist request left a very nasty mark to the male's ego and pride.
Rilden continued flying towords the river not aknowledging that his father had just roared at him. It wasnt long before be was back in the spot he had been in for the other two fish waiting for a third to come into his grasp
Garrett growled and rammed the stick into the ground. "Such disrespect! I'm going for a walk." His fur was bristled with fury. Getting up the male walked out into the forest.
Kirianna jumped up but decided it best if she didnt go after him. A small sigh escaped her lips as she waited for Rilden to come back. After a few minutes Rilden came back carrieing a fish. He held it out to his mother. Kirianna took the fish sighing and sticking the stick through the fish before placing it over the fire "garretts angry" she said gently as she sat down. "i know" Rilden mumbled looking into the fire
Out in the forest he had managed to find a nice doe and Garrett took out his anger on the poor defenseless creature. However, he had only snapped its neck after attacking it and tackling it to the ground. He picked up the deer with a grunt and walked back to the camp. He said nothing to either Kirianna nor Rilden as he sat down on the ground by the fire and began to carefully skin the deer. However he had to stop and find a nice sized rock before he continued on. After he was done, he held the carcass in one hand and set the skin to dry by the fire on the rock. He then found another rock and began to strip off sections of the meat, placing that on the second rock. He worked in complete silence.
Rilden had eaten his second fish before Garrett had gotten back. Neither Kirianna or Rilden had said anything either since he had gotten back
As all the meat that could be used had been stripped away, he allowed for the fire to consume any and all the guts. He also had set the bones by the fire just close enough to burn away the remaining pieces left. He picked up the skin and moved back to the river. It was there that he washed it clean and came back to hold it over the fire. The lion anthro refused to even look at Rilden.
Rilden didnt take it as hard as a child should having his father ignoring him. He simply moved to sit at his mothers feet
Finally with the fur dried, the deer pelt was completely clean. Garrett walked over and looked to Kirianna. He set it down on her lap. "This will keep you warm tonight." His voice still held gentleness towards her, however, Garrett continued to refuse Rilden's presence as he turend back tot eh fire and sat down to carefully make sure the bones were being cleaned. When he saw that the arm bone was clean, he broke one end and began to scrape it along the rock, to sharpen it.
Rilden moved out of the way of the fur as it draped over Kiriannas lap. He leaned back agenced her leg once she was situated
Garrett finally had sharpened the bone and set ti down beside him. He grabbed another bone and repeated this process for every bone in the deer's body except for the skull. The skull itself he just set down as he worked. The lion anthro felt completely isolated and his resentment only grew in his silence. He would keep his word and do as he said. That was all he would do though.
Kirianna signed softly "you two can deal with this yourselfs, i'm not getting stuck in the middle" she said sounding quite frustrated as she got up letting the deer hide drop before walking off into the shadows
Garrett spoke in a low voice, glaring into the fire. "This is what happens when you do not listen to your elders when it comes to your well being. I hope you have learned a valuable lesson. I hope as well you can control your instincts as well as I can when you're old enough to have children of your own." Cold, grene eyes glared over at Rilden from his shoulder. "If you do not know now, allow me to tell you for your own knowledge. Should you have an offspring who disobeys, it is a lion's nature to put them in line by any means necessary, which in most instances, lead to death of the offspring. Know that for your future, so you know why you have such urges when you have children." He turned his gaze back to the fire as he continued to sharpen a femur bone. This was much harder to do.
Rilden didn't speak, he hadn't learned any lessons nor regretted what he did in any way, yet he did know better then to voice this to Garrett, for he was much bigger than him, even if Rilden could get away easily if he needed
"I see I waste my breath on you. Fine. You can be the one to tell your mother of your behavior, because I will not waste any more." And with that, Garrett fell silent, with only the sound of scraping bone against rock echoing in the silence.
"mom knows what i did" he said staring into the flames
Garrett continued to stay quiet as he worked. He was dead serious about not wasting his breath on the young winged lion if he wasn't listening. He turned the bone to work on the other side. Femurs were very difficult to manipulate.
"you're both being stubborn" Kiriannas voice came from above, she was perched in a tree "and i'm not coming down until you two settle it" she said flatly
Garrett called back to Kirianna. "By lion standards, I think I've been more than generous. Your son has already made it more than clear he has not only ignored my warning, but has also learned nothing. There is nothing more I can do." He said nothing about ignoring Kirianna or her words.
"i dont go by lion standards just like you dont go by gypsy standards"
"Yes, but there are instincts that even I must battle with as a lion. As it stands, I still fight away my urge to do as I should. As far as I am concerned, I am doing my part by not allowing my instincts to get the better of me here." Garrett was beginning to wonder if there was a point in even trying to explain.
"try asking him why" she said before the sound of her wings crashed before it faded "don't piss him off" she said her voice directed at Rilden
Garrett had grown rather annoyed by this point. Why was this even a dispute? The child was clearly out of line. Oh Kirianna and him had so much to talk about when they were not near their son. They clearly had different ideas about parenting. Reasoning with a child. Feh. He found that as useful as trying to explain anything useful to Rilden. He merely continued working. The one femur was finally done and he now moved to the next one.
Rilden waited for about five minutes before climbing up onto the rock he had launched himself from
The only sign that Garrett had noticed the young anthro's movements was the flicking of his ears. The male was extremely tired of this whole charade. Finally, all the bones had been sharpened except for hooves and skull. Those he left alone. With one of the mid-sized bone spears, he used it to flip the meat by the fire to cook the other side. The meats were growing dried out. He figured this would be easiest for them to travel with should energy be needed along the way. Seeing that the fish he had left was still there, he grabbed the fish and stick and threw both in the fire.
"do you even care that i dont talk to you?" Rilden's eyes were set intently on Garrett as he said this and he was sitting on the rock with his wings spread
"Do I care? Yes. Do I react in the way you want me to? No." Garrett now looked at Rilden and set down his bones around him. "I've seen plenty of children like you before." He would hardly sugarcoat his rather low voice. "Had you had any other father, you would have been killed by this point for it too. You're the only one from that town to survive with such behavior to your father."
"i dont want you to react in any way" he said looking at his father "you seem to think i want nothing more than to disrespect you which is not the case"
"Second lesson, which you will probably ignore as well: Never assume anything. I am angry with you for disrespecting my knowledge and trust. At first I questioned if I had misjudged the disrespect of my knowledge until a few moments ago right here, where you proved to me I was correct."
"why do you think i said you seemed instead of all out assuming, i'm not that dumb"
"To seem means you have made a guess. Instead of testing that guess first, you went on that guess and here you have found it was incorrect." Garrett ran a hand through his hair. WHY was he doing this again? Oh yeah.. Kirianna.
"what do you want me to do"
"What do I want you to do? Trust me. That is all. I don't care if you don't like me, or love me, or even hate me. If you wish to continue going on to think you know more than your own parents, then fine. I am not held accountable for happens to you, and neither is your mother. But trust me when it comes to your well being. I.." He stopped himself there and shook his head. He had to choose his words carefully. "I know how to raise a son. That is all I want. You want to disobey me about anything else, fine. But trust that I know what is in your best interest."
"will you listen to my reasoning now?"
"As you wish." Garrett would listen to him as he had been listened to.
"there were three fish, one for each of us, i really wasn't hungry any longer, i only ate quickly because that is how i always have eaten, back when i was at that house away from you and mom, if i didnt get done eating first, my food was taken, two bites isnt enough for anyone to live on as a ration, so i tried to solve the problem, no disrespect was meant by it"
"If you meant no disrespect, then why did you not return when you had heard me call for you to resolve and clear up the matter when you had heard how it had been taken?" The lion then flipped the meat on the stone to make sure it was drying nicely. "And how is it you know what is enough for me? Just as you were forced to endure hardships in that city, I have gone without food for long periods of time before. Had you stayed in that city, you would have gone through that same training when you were old enough."
The boy looked at him "that is the past, this is now, we dont have to live like that anymore so why put you through that when it isnt needed"
Garrett gave a sigh. "Son, you have only lived through it most of your short life. Many things did not even fall on your shoulders that come with age. Like you I was born in that city and have known only that life. I'm rather old in comparison and to live like that, old habits can die hard. I did what I did tonight actually more as a failed attempt to try and bond closer with you." He spoke that last part very softly as he turned glance at the meats to make sure they were burning before looking back at him.
Rilden looked over at his father with the same blank look on his face "i wont take your food, that is one thing i refuse, i do aknowledge you are my father, which is more than i felt when we first escaped and both of us were wounded"
"Better I know now to never try and offer you food again, than for the same mistake to be made twice." Garrett closed his eyes and sighed. "Honestly, you are the first and only of my offspring that I will ever call son." His eyes openned to stare at him. "Because of what you had to endure there, I do not expect anything more than trust. If we do not trust each other as a family, there is no telling the damage that could happen to you, your mother or me. I want nothing more than to protect you, Rilden, and make sure you know what you need to for life." His eyes were gentle and showed of his care for his son.
Rilden watched him over the fire intently "does it bother you that i dont talk, or smile really"
Garrett now smiled to Rilden. "It only concerns me for when you get older. I know that you had to go through much more than most anthros around you ever had to. Does it bother you that you are different?"
"no"
Garrett gave a nod. "Good. Never let it. As my son, I just accept that this is who you are right now. I will always accept you."
Rilden offered a small smile to the lion across from the fire from him before looking at the sky "i wonder when she'll be back"
Garrett gave a shrug to Rilden. "I don't know. Soon I hope." Standing up he grabbed the smaller bones he had wittled down and walked over to Rilden offering them out to him. "Good to throw from a distance."
Rilden held his hand out taking them gently. He put them gingerly in his pocket making a note to make a pouch or something to carry them in "thank you"
Garrett smiled to him and very quickly, as if to not break his macho ego, he hugged Rilden. "I'm very proud of you, Rilden, no matter how we may fight. I will always love you, son." He ruffled his hair before moving back away to grab hold of the rest of the sharpened bones to pile them up. He then began to make a pile for the finished meats, moving the ones that still needed more time to dry out to the front of the rock to feel the heat of the fire.
Rilden blinked rather suprised by the contact. Smoothing out his mussed up hair he looked up "mums back" he said calmly as Kirianna landed roughly on her feet "you two done now?"
Garrett turned and walked over to Kirianna and kissed her cheek. However that was all he would do to show things were better as he moved to sit down and stretch, yawning. "Tomorrow, we really can't stop so the dried deer meat can help keep up our strength as we travel."
Kirianna nodded with a bit of a smile, she knew all was well "that will work, it is getting late though"
Garrett moved back to grab the largest bone spear made. "You two rest up. I'm going to watch to make sure no one or thing sees our fire."
Kirianna looked up "are you sure?"
Garrett smiled warmly glancing to her. "Yes. Now rest. We have a long day tomorrow."
Kirianna nodded and looked over to Rilden "coming? she asked softly. Rilden nodded glancing over at Garrett before walking over to his mom.
Garrett smiled to Rilden. "Goodnight." The lion male made his way to the edge of camp, where he would keep a lookout for Hayden or the animals of the forest.
