I've never been the only oboeist. There's always been me and one of my friends playing the oboe, we get along great, though. So I'm happy with the whole set up.

Nicholai Maxwell Jen48 I play the Oboe, well try and play the oboe sweatdrop My broken reed count: 7 . I'm not that bad... My school dosn't have a band like that but we do have music concerts and i play in those... well attempt to play in those Ahh. I haven't broken any reeds, in 2 years of playing. Mine just get old, and don't sound as good from use, so I am fairly lucky. All of my reeds are still usable, but not much more. u lucky son of a gun... my first reed broke SECONDS before my first christmas concert... now i carry a spare for the spare's spare. mine usually split down the middle in this huge class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, good source for oboe reeds: hodgeproductsinc.com they are handmade reeds, and you can actually buy half-finished reeds to finish to your liking (I'm currently learning how to make my own reeds). Jokes: How many oboists does it take to change a lightbulb? Only one, but he has to go through ten to twenty bulbs to find the best one.

I don't play the oboe, but I do know that Jones reeds on the bassoon really aren't the best. I'd imagine it has to be the same for an oboe.
The best advice if you want better reeds is to find somewhere online that makes reeds hand-made and well or you could always learn to make them.
It's something even I haven't done. sweatdrop

I'm sad. No one likes the english horn. I love the english horn. It's much easier than the oboe, and has a beautifully rich sound (if you're good). People at my school are kind of idiots: "I thought you didn't like brass instruments?" "No I said I didn't think I could play them." "But you just said you liked playing english horn." "English horn isn't a brass instrument. It's a double reed instrument, like the oboe." "Then what's that curly one called?" "French, Sara. That's a French horn." "Oh."
Jokes: What do you call perfect pitch with an oboe? Impossible (or) Into the dumpster without hitting the sides.

I play bassoon. I march with a clarinet.
I make my own reeds. All the Jones ones need a bit of shaving anyway.
The price for all the tools needed was about the price 8 Jones reeds and I made 10 reeds. After that my reeds were about $1.50.
In my reed box I pretty much always had a good reed, a spare, and one I was working on. If anyone wants me to explain the process, I would be happy to.
