When do all of ya'll (sorry, it's a southern thing) start playing on actually horns? In elementary school all we got were recorders and didn't actually join band til middle school. And even though we were in band we never went to competions, we just had local concerts. Oh well, at least we're going every where in high school.
This is prolly the wrong place but does anyone else know where they're competing this year? I know my band is doing a BOA regional in florida and grand nationals in addition to a few local ones.

Competitions can start anywhere from junior high to high school. And I started playing on an instrument in fourth grade. And you'll probably just have concerts until you get to seventh, eighth, maybe even ninth grade.

Well, I'm a junior and I've been playing for eight years now, counting junior year. We started on actual instruments, though. I guess it just depends on where you're from.

So finally got my first piece of show music(YEAH!!!) and like i said, it's all quarter notes with so 8th notes here and there. It's entitled "Henry V" and so i googled it (biggest band geek of them all, woot!!). My results lead me to believe that we're doing ________ show, it's so awesome... I'm prolly all wrong with my suspicions but a friend of mine that already knows the show name went away right after i mentioned it stare well i gotta get ready for work (my work name is now: Felix{yeah, everyone at andy's is crazy})

Alright, well my summer of wonderful productive practiving time is officially ruined. I rented the WORST bass clarinet in the world from Brookmays, and began to play it. IT's just bad T____T It leaks all over the place, the b flat never comes out, tne low e flat wiggles when I play iit, and all of the low pinky keys stick... and I have tried cleaning behind them. It's horrible. PLus, it barely plays. With my other instrument, it played even if my reed was only two minutes wet. Now, my reed has to be at LEAST 30 minutes wet... and that bugs me. Plus, my mom is taking the instrument back soon, and the school may not have an instrument for me whne school starts... crud.

*glomps the clarinetists, then glomps her wooden clarinet*

I'm probably eons older than all of you... I've been playing clarinet since 4th grade, which was in 1990... In high school I was in marching band all four years (co-section leader and assistant drum major my senior year), was moved up to the "advanced" band my sophomore year, and then in college I played for two and a half years in the college band, serving as secretary for two years and concert mistress for one.

Now I am graduated and bandless.... crying

Wow! Someone about my age! I started in 5th grade which was...geez...1995. I marched all 4 year of high school and I played in concert band/jazz band. I started as 4th chair clarinet in concert band and clarinet lead in jazz band. Marching band, I was just a 2nd clarinet. My sophomore year I moved up to 3rd chair on concert, 2nd chair 1st clarinet in marching band, and clarinet lead/lead tenor sax in jazz band. My junior year I was the saxophone section leader in marching band, the concert master in concert band, and I stopped in jazz (which sucked). My senior year I was the drum major in MB, marched in the Rose Parade with the PCC TofR Honor Band (WHICH ROCKED!!!!), was the concert master/Band Director (my director got fired my senior year), and was the concert master of the first SBCMEA High Desert High School Honor Band. I am teh band nerd. sweatdrop sweatdrop Oh! In college (I'm starting my third year) I only had the opportunity to perform with the chamber ensemble/jazz ensemble for one semester because the music program was cut at our community college.

lol..we were only given the opportunity to start in 6th....But I assure you I took advantage of it hehe...Soo..have you marched clarinet before?
you bet, my marching band is second best in the mid-atlantic region!
Hmm....I don't know what place we are...but we don't exactly go to competitions so I guess it's warranted...hehe....

Anyway, I marched clarinet for two years before switching to brass....that was two years ago but I still remember much of what it was like hehe.....I think the hardest thing I had during the first part of every band camp was keeping my mouthpiece from knocking against my teeth...hehe...the good ole days....There was one thing that always bugged me when I marched clarinet though...IT WASN'T LOUD ENOUGH! lol.....of course...wood clarinets are like that 3nodding

...you marched a wooden clarinet? You're bold. I had a resonite Vito 7212 (with personal modifications wink ) for marching band and a LeBlanc Normandy 4 for concert band. As for the volume, I have a story for you biggrin My marching band peformed a show that my drum major made up called Marching Band V. The Football Team my sophomore year. The flags were playing the football team members and the show consisted of college fights songs. The first practice we had where w were actually allowed to use our instruments, everyone was COMPLETELY psyched because now we could finally hear on the field what we played in the classroom. It got to the song time and we were marchign the show with relative ease, but the only things you could hear from the bleachers were the drumline, a single trumpet, and me on clarinet. Apparently no one practiced the music, so it sounded HORRIBLE, and almost no one played!! I ended up getting musician of the night, because I played loud enough that you could hear CLEARLY what it was supposed to sound like, and because some of the parents thought that I was playing the FLUTE!!!!! I was so mad. But it was a very cool deal. Clarinets can be loud wink It's all a matter of breath control.

They really can be. Loudness isn't really what I go for. I go for tone quality, and embechure formation first, then if I can make it louder and still be able to go my full dynamic range, then I will. I know some people who's only dynamic levels are 'Loud' and 'Resting.'

Heheh. This is rather off-topic...but tonight I saw a DCI event at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfressboro--which is an hour drive away from me--and it was AMAZING. It was the top eight Corps. I'd list them if I wasn't so tired...or too lazy to get up and get the program. sweatdrop

GO CAVALIERS. xd heart mrgreen

They announced the new section leaders on Monday, but I was out of town...I hope we get someone punctual and not...well...stupid. gonk

...and good news. My parents said I can go out of state for college if it's a Christian college and I have a full scholarship...there's one in Texas with a marching band I have my eye on. heart

does anone know if alto clarinet is easier to play than bass clarient? my director is thinking of moving me to alto ,but it's totally my decission (spelling?). unfortunately they don't have an alto on hand and the only way for me to try is for them to order it (couldn't they just borrow it from someone?! xp ) we generally have a small budget so i don't want them to waste money.....
