Xehart looked at the small vendor with contempt, a look of anger quickly passed over his face, before that smile filled with malice replaced it. Xehart took a step forward, raising himself to his full height, so that he would be taller than the vendor.

"That depends on what you have inside that book. I'd warrant that you'd have to lose something fairly hefty to gain what's inside. I have something in mind that I'd like to give up."

With that, Xehart moved towards a small bag that he kept at his side. It was full of small trinkets, not gold by any measure, but it would sound like coins when jostled at least. Xehart brought forward the small bag, and bounced it lightly up and down in his hand.

"How about you give me that book, and you can have whatever is in this bag."

Xehart didn't intend to let the man keep the small bag, in fact, he didn't even plan to give the man the bag. As soon as he had the book, he would kill the man for his impudence in asking Xehart for something in return for the book. It was an insult to have a living man ask a dead man for payment.

"The knowledge can be worth less then the stones you trod upon, or a king's ransom. The same said of your offer. I, however, can guarantee that your mind will open when your eyes gaze upon the words within. Indeed, it is a powerful weapon, this knowledge. See it!... The book of the Sun burns brightly in your eye, I know it. The Book of the Moon shall illuminate the darkest recesses of your mind when you most need it. And the Book of the Stars shine for you-- look to it to bring you home.

"A man who deals for unknown offers unknown. The value has always totaled the offer. This in mind, select the map to your future, and pay the ferryman his due."

A hand was held out for the bag.

Xehart snatched back the bag that he was holding, before dangling it slightly in front of the man. His free arm extended, and his finger suddenly pointed to the sky, before making a slow back and forth motion like a metronome.

"Nuh-uh, little man. Give me the book of the moon, and you shall have your just rewards."

Xehart prepared energy in his forearms, ready for a quick and sudden bone growth upon the one holding the bag. As soon as he had the book, he would let the man have the small bag, as well as the little surprise Xehart was cooking up for him.

"The book is yours to take. Far be it for me to guide your hand."

The words were said simply enough, really. He could take the book himself, and just leave the bag on the table, if he didn't feel like... putting it in his hand.

Xehart eagerly snatched up the book with his free hand, and cradling it in his elbow, he made an attempt to feel the front of the book with his other hand, rubbing the leather softly. He opened the cover quickly, and scanned over the figures, before looking back at the man.

"It's unreadable. I'm not going to pay you for this. I'll thank you for your business, and be on my way then."

With that Xehart turned and made his way down the alleyway. As he moved, he kept his senses on the street vendor. If he moved closer to Xehart, he would place a spike through his brain. He would wait until he was around the corner before making a run. He would leave the battle, this wasn't his scene anyway.

The vendor wouldn't follow.

In fact, Xehart's senses would show that there was nobody to be looking for at all.

Xehart was confused that his senses showed no vendor, but didn't doubt them, the man was gone, somehow. He kept moving until he turned the corner, where he quickly broke into the closest house. Unfortunately the inhabitants had fled, following the mass crowds trying to evacuate the city. Perhaps next time he'd be lucky.

Xehart made his way to the rooftop, where he took a moment to take in the city scene. There was carnage in the streets, the army that had managed to get in was running almost unopposed, leveling buildings and slaughtering people. Animated corpses ran around the streets in all directions, it was impossible to tell where the corpses the Necropolis brought ended, and the ones resurrected today began. More carnage waited outside the city however, most of the army was behind the gates, waiting to come in, or by siege ladders, mounting the wall.

Xehart made a note of this, before he turned and began to make his way across the rooftops, he was moving north. This battle wasn't his scene anymore, he grew bored of battle. If he had been any other troop in the army, he would have feared leaving, maybe even have been filled with self-hatred, but he was Xehart. A legacy among Dead-men, and soon, he'd have the contents of this book to marvel over.

The autocannons would get off a few shots before being rained down upon by explosive fireballs. Evasive maneuvers did not seem very evasive, as just about ever shell fired at the airship struck. But the Vengeance was more heavily armored than the Vecna was, so the damage the hull took before the mages on board could counterattack was minimal.

"I want a full spread," Captain Krik said, "Blanket the whole city."

"Aye, sir. Main cannon is ready."

"Fire!"

Vengeance's main cannon fired, but instead of one solid beam of negative energy, it came out in multiple, smaller beams, arcing through the air and fanning out to carpet bomb a wide section of the city.

"Contact Captain Starrow," Krik ordered, "and request reinforcements."

Meanwhile, the Wraiths that were still in the air after all this time engaged the new air support that was arriving, hoping to take them out quickly. On the ground, the undead hordes were leaving the overrun base, their ranks bolstered by zombies in military uniforms, still carrying their weapons. They chased after the survivors fleeing to safety.

Laselle grimaced as her earpiece buzzed.

"At a time like this? Damn!"

She yelled over the noise of the autocannons. "Here's the deal, people! I want six of you to remain and keep this shield running! The rest are with me- we have to return to Durem, now! We have more enemies attacking headquarters, and need to do some counter-shield work! Form up!"

Six stayed. Five left immeidately via teleportation.

The shield immediately lost half its capacity... but still held against the attack.

"Hold together! Put everything you have into keeping this shield going!"

The building shook with the attack, but still stood strong. The Security Chief sighed and said, "At least they still have our defenses up. Missile batteries, full spread. Do as much damage as you can to the damn thing. Fire at will."

A salvo of surface-launched AIM-120 missiles were deployed, hoping to put a few dents into the damned thing before the situation got any worse.

By now, the Super Cobras had gotten to where they needed to be... and found little trace of the Marines they were to support. "Damn them... Fire those counter-shield missiles. Rockets on standby, miniguns ready. Give 'em hell."

They both managed to fire their missiles before the incoming beam spray almost took them both out.

"Bandits inbound, and there's a lot of them!"

His wingman cursed and said, "Fine, they wanna play? Let's play with them. Give 'em the cannons."

Within seconds, 25mm autocannon rounds were fired towards the Wraiths.

As for the phrogs, they were inbound as well, they would just come later when a landing zone was secured.

**

The Marines down on the ground had made their last stand. The fire from the mages' attacks became too much altogether, and they were obliterated. There was only one platoon left now... and it was up to them to hold Aekea until reinforcements got on the ground.

Well, them and the two helos that had come in for air support. Hopefully, they wouldn't be shot down so easily.

Sorry, guys... we couldn't make it.

BOOM.

"Nnf..."

Reyin pulled himself up, peering over the edge of the building he had just jumped to just in time to witness another explosion. Reyin ducked back behind the wall and covered his head, going back to look once all the rubble had finished pinging off of his back.

He stood up, staring at the building housing the gate controls, then to the gate itself. He was going to have to hit the ground at some point, so he might as well be inside when he did it.

Gathering up his duffle bag, Reyin took a deep breath and kicked open the roof access door to the building he was atop of. Descending the stairs, Reyin soon came to realize that he was inside a warehouse of sorts. Flood lights provided poor illumination for the blonde swordsman, but eventually his eyes readjusted to the dim light and he was free to gaze upon a bunch of recently-constructed farm equipment.

"Sweet."

Reyin hopped down from the staircase and let out a low whistle as he scanned the surroundings, completely unaware of a twin pair of red eyes staring at him from the shadows underneath a large truck.

A portal opened up and suddenly a dozen more Wraiths came flying out, blasting the missiles out of the sky, and were accompanied by a pair of Spectre dropships that immediately swooped down to the ground to off load their cargo. Dark, carapace-skinned creatures with four clawed arms came bolting out of the ships' hatches, dashing down the streets to find the first warm body to rip into pieces. Vengeance laid down a volley of cannon fire upon the autocannons, hoping to destroy them before they could become a real threat.

"Get necromancers on the ground," Captain Krik ordered. "I want those damned defenses destroyed!"

"Sir, the next shot is ready to fire."

"Keep it on full spread. I want the mortals to suffer as much as possible."

"s**t... More of them."

The Security Chief turned on his alternate radio frequency and said, "R.I.O.T. Four, do you copy?"

Static for a brief moment, then, "We read you five by five, Sir. We're all right, but they're giving us a tough time out here. You got any assets that can get us the hell out of this?"

He shrugged and said, "I have one... but it's gonna take some doing. We're all right over here, relatively. R.I.O.T. Eight is still holding that shield in place, but the enemy has multiple reinforcements to their air assault. Not to mention we're getting reports that new enemy units have arrived via APCs, so we're gonna have to act fast."

The leader of R.I.O.T. Four nodded and said, "I'll get someone on it. We'll break through this siege and send these walking corpses back to Hell."

The Security Chief nodded and said, "Good man. See that you do. Control out."

With that, he made another call. "This is RI Aekea calling for any available birds in the air, we are under heavy fire and need some relief. Get the biggest guns you got out here, because we are going through a major s**t storm."

The shield, meanwhile, held strong. R.I.O.T. Eight may have left six of their members here, but they were still experts in their field. And because the shield was up, the 40mm autocannons had time to re-align their targeting systems.

The Wraiths were about to get a taste of their own medicine...

And the next missile battery fired at that big airship, yet another attempt to break something on the damn thing.

The gate crew were well into the building now, and were preparing to open the gates. Outside, the large body-slaves, being too large themselves to navigate the building, were keeping watch for any additional ground attacks. The body and bone mages were maintaining shields for anything that wasn't an arc-attack, and the fire mages were on full alert for an aerial assault. If it moved near the air space, it would be destroyed, undead or not.

Inside the building the Elites had made their way to the gate control room itself, assuming no internal defenses. All they would need was a minute to get the gates open. On the other side of the gates, the army was ready to rush into the streets and cause some chaos.

Slifer Ozura
On the other side of the gates, the army was ready to rush into the streets and cause some chaos.
Chaos was coming for them.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The warehouse doors had been thrown open, and out poured all sorts of farm equipment. Mack Trucks , Combines, Tractors hauling Cultivators, and enough diesel smog to cause the air above Aekea to blacken just another shade. Four Combines in all took the front, the Eight trucks pulled up along either side, filled to the brim with heavy stones, while the tractors touched bumper-to-bumper with the Combines carrying the Cultivators behind them, each one spanning about twenty feet in length. The threshers on the front of the combines easily combined to cover a solid eighty foot spread, and when the threshers kicked on the sound of whirring blades overshadowed the explosions and jetwash overhead.

The farm equipment was, as anyone with half a brain could assume, impressively huge. Comparable in size to most, if not all military issue vehicles, the agricultural machinery bearing down on the Dead Man army was perhaps even more terrifying than the most armored of tanks. The threshers were there to obviously do what they were designed to do, tear up and 'harvest' anything caught in the whirling blades. The mack trucks were there simply for support, but the Aekean robots piled into the back were eager to do their part in the defense of their city. Namely, hurling the huge rocks out of the back of the truck at any Dead Man attempting to get out of the way or disable the Combines. The tractors and their Cultivators were running cleanup, smashing, pounding, and chewing up anything that managed to survive the initial threshing.

In short, the Dead Men may have gained entrance to the city, but they were getting the most impolite greeting in the history of the world.

And where was Reyin Nova during all of this?

Proudly standing atop the center Thresher, hands on his hips, head cocked back and a maniacal laugh sounding from his lungs.

But wait, if Reyin was there...

A quick look would reveal that a majority of Aekea's robot population had joined in on the rural revolution. The red eyes that had been staring at Reyin in the warehouse belonged to none other than Bildeau's cousin, Bildeeng. After convincing the scared little android that he was friendly, they were quick to lend their metallic aid in the form of their driving services. They emptied the warehouse, piled as many survivors into the vehicles as they could, and with a bit of Reyin's help, lined up their convoy to decimate as many of the enemy reinforcements at the gate as possible.

The military would have to be responsible for mopping up the forces left inside the city, but at least they wouldn't have to worry about enemy reinforcements.

Not bad for a bartender.

Not bad at all.
