Veyes glanced over at Ren to see the slight bit of green hiding in the boy's clothes. But he didn't say anything about it. He wiped his own nose and tried to keep himself from letting loose several tears for the loss of the blue. He did turn his head as the little green hatched but as it wandered off to the girls, he didn't really watch it much further than that.
"She's worried about you. That's sweet, Ren." he finally said as he took a deep breath and attempted to bring his thoughts back into focus. He didn't think that the hatching feast was really going to be in the cards tonight, he'd just tell Mal congratulations later...He doubted Mal would mind. He didn't really feel like celebrating anything.

Raedue suddenly found his eyes drawn to the girls and the flash of green among them. It seemed like things were going well for her. He hoped she made her choice soon. It would hopefully raise the spirits greatly in the place to have a successful hatching.

Ollen's heart felt like it was breaking emphasized by people crying and screaming her heart pounded and she looked about the sands. The cracking and hatching of the green didn't seem to be pulling many from their sorrow and she in fact was barely phased by the hatching. What if this one was just as confused and lost, what if this one went between like the other. She shuddered and watched the pretty green walk towards the females and braced herself.
They try to prepare you in lessons for a hatching, but what hey do not do is prepare you for the emotional dragonride that comes with standing in the sands. She tried very hard to emit happy, calming feelings like she was told she did not want her emotions to distress a dragon.

Ailurath's voice cracked and Jessmet spent a moment convincing the green to stop her keening. "Let's go down," she murmured, stroking her dragon's cheek. "I see several of your clutchmates." The green's chest rumbled as she calmed down, angling her wings into position for a controlled glide.
Convinced that her dragon would be alright for the moment, Jessmet began to wind her way through the long hallways of the Weyr from the ledge to the Sands.
Ailurath arrived amongst her siblings in a puff of sand. She stretched her neck out in greeting, seeking comfort. Even with Jess' knowledge of the Weyr's corridors, using every shortcut she knew, it would be another few minutes before Jessmet joined Ailurath near the Stands.

Shards, oh, Faranth, it was gone. The Blue, it was... he was just.. gone. Shards..
Like many other Candidates, Koios didn't know what to do. He'd never experienced this before, he'd heard of it but he'd never seen it, he didn't think it would happen. Especially not with the overcrowding problems and oh shards, he was gone.
He suddenly found himself on his knees on the sand, his legs apparently decided they didn't want to hold him up anymore, and he inhaled a shuddering breath. All he could do was stare at the place the pale Blue had been before going between, his entire being filled with the wails and cries of both dragons and humans. What could he do? Nothing, nothing at all. There wasn't anything that anyone could do, person or dragon, Candidate or Weyrwoman. Absolutely nothing, and that seemed to make it all the more frustrating and intensified the helpless feeling.
But.. but another dragonet had hatched in the middle of the chaos and depression, and this was no way to greet a hatchling. He got up rather shakily, jaw set and forcing himself to stand on his own. He couldn't find it in himself to cry, perhaps later he would, but not now. No, he needed to be strong for the new hatchlings, however few that were left, and for everyone else. He wasn't sure quite why he felt this way, but he did. That was all that mattered, that he had to be strong even though many others were openly weeping and mourning the loss of the Blue.

The second he'd reached the table, Matsukazeth hot on his heels, A'nt had flopped to a seated position, tears slowly streaming his face. Despite the horrible, gut-wrenching sadness, he knew that His Matsukazeth needed to be fed- desperate to control his shaking hands, the boy was carefully sizing the meat, handing it to the Brown in small chunks. With his other free hand, he was stroking at the dragon's neck, murmuring encouragement over the sobs.
"D-don't forget to chew, Matsukazeth. Don't want you choking to death right when I've finally found you," he said, a hint of humor creeping into his otherwise miserable voice. Rubbing a hand once more over the Brown's neck, A'nt finally was unable to choke back a sob, leaning to touch his forehead to Matsukazeth's. The dragon crooned in mutual sadness, closing his eyes.
Oh, Mine. Oh, Mine, Mine, Mine, why must this happen when you found Yours? My poor brother! The two shared a moment of mutual grief, here- Matsukazeth not wanting to upset His any further.
Knowing he still had to tend his, A'nt forced himself back into feeding, still tearing the meat and quietly whispering to Matsukazeth. Swallowing back another burst of tears, A'nt quietly turned to another new rider, face devoid of any shred of happiness.
"S-some hatching, huh."

Miah tried to stay where she was, in amongst the group of girls Xanthoth has previous occupied. She had tried very hard to focus on the hatching and pretend that she was okay. Balin had his dragon now, and they would be alright. Bachi was no doubt safe somewhere, knowing him, that safe place probably involved a couple of girls. All she had to do was stay here, keep her chin up and wait for a dragon (if one ever came to her). But her carefully laid plans were quickly shattered by the rampaging blue. Even she, who knew as much about dragons as any Holder, knew something was amiss. It wasn't until the blue disappeared did she feel the full weight of little hatchling's final moments.
And in that moment, Miah was reminded that she was just a little fourteen turn old girl who really, really needed a hug.
"BALIN!"
Without a second thought about whether or not it was respectable to embrace a Weyrling, she turned and ran towards Balin, or whatever his sharding name was now. How was she supposed to know how he was going to shorten his name anyways? She couldn't have stopped the tears even if she tried, so instead she threw her arms around her only sort of friend and buried her face in his clothes.
~
It had taken H'dra several candles to actually convince himself to leave his weyr and come to the hatching on time, and now he was beginning to regret that decision. True, he had been able to see Santhea stand proudly among the other candidates – a fact that Dievath was extremely happy about despite not remembering her name – but had it really been worth all of this? A blue had gone between for Faranth's sake! Oh he had heard that there had been no touching because a candidate had touched the eggs prematurely but he had never thought it would come to this! This was too much!
It took all of the intestinal fortitude he possessed not to collapse in a heap in the stands. The emotional overflow from his own blue was far too strong to even shield against. Dievath had stopped his bellowing and was moaning softly, not used to this kind of sadness. This was supposed to be a happy day! More little baby blues and other dragons for him to play with and be friends with! This was so wrong and he ached deep inside for the hatchling. I am afraid, Mine. I do not understand. Why did he go? I would have been his friend. He did not have to go.
I don't know. I really don't know. H'dra pitifully tried to wipe his face with his sleeve, but it didn't make his face any drier. What had made that blue do that?

Oh shards, that was bad. With the departure of the blue dragonet left Kyllae's last hope of ever salvaging her reputation. No matter that it might not have been her fault. Dragonets were said to between from time to time, right? The fact of the matter was simple though, everyone wanted someone to blame. And in this case, it would be her, whether she deserved it or not.
Kyllae felt...sick. She paled, and tensed, staring hard at where the dragonet had just been, as if unable to comprehend its betweening. This was...what was it? Kyllae wasn't sure what to do. She heard someone scream her name, yelling, was aware of a quite a few eyes on her, but...she was unable to act on it, didn't care much either. She was in shock. Had that...had that just happened?
She needed to leave. There would be plenty of people out for blood, and it wouldn't be safe to hang around here, but...she couldn't move. She was frozen in place, breath caught in her throat. That, blue, he...was gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
T'ka blinked a few times, as if she too were unable to register the blue's departure. SHARDS! Her next emotion was confusion, then rage, then anxiety. Was Kyllae here? No doubt she was, that girl was always around, but T'ka didn't see her. No doubt Kyllae was dressed in something less than flashy. T'ka wasn't sure whether to blame the ex-Dolphineer or not. It might not have been her fault, but...oh, what was she to do? T'ka was lost for words and actions.
Haanyath lent her voice to the air too, but only for a moment. She was practical, and more focused on her anxiety than remorse. Mourning the departed young one would not bring him back. Nothing would. Instead she looked around, glancing at hers before looking for Kyllae. Haanyath was worried for her safety.
Still feeling so sore, so hurt... S'van stared down at the Sands, and saw the little Green. "A Green!" A live baby. Oh thank goodness that she had come out of her egg safely. Would she find Hers? "Please find your rider, little one. Please." Galliath, who languished mournfully in the risers, directed an encouraging croon at the baby, trying to help avoid another tragedy. "Go, little Green. Find Yours. Please, please find Yours." At least the Brown had been paired. At least his little life had been spared. Yours waits for you, Galliath directed to the tiny Green, sadness still aching through him.
Everything had been going so... well....
O'asis had barely begun explaining that Uktenath had chosen not to come to the Stands because they would be too crowded to fit in a dragon of his growing size (which, Jr. Weyrling though he might be, was still considerable), when in an instant, everything was uprooted and changed. O'asis had never seen a dragon going between before - it was rumor, not fact, that even hinted to the possibility. His voice cut off in mid-word as he stared down at the Sands, uncomprehending.
His hand was gripping Kyllae's a bit more tightly than was probably comfortable now.
Mine. Uktenath's voice was superficially cool, as though the tragedy had been intellectually processed in an instant, but the emotional impact was still just dawning. Mine, he went between... and I do not think that he is coming back.
"... Oh." O'asis should have said more, but at that moment, he didn't know what better to say.
Uktenath, however, knew better than to wait for him to find more words; the little bronze appeared as if from between himself (though of course, he'd merely shoved his way very through the crowds to find His, knocking more than a few knees and hipbones along the way). His head appeared over O'asis's shoulder, even as the ex-Trader was still coming to acknowledge what had happened. He spoke carefully, calmly, but there was no hiding the yellow in his eyes - Mine... I do not want to be without you right now....
***
Dolmin simply fell apart.
There was no make-believe he could do to pretend that the blue wasn't gone. He'd tried it. It hadn't worked.
Every Weyrbrat his age knew what between was - it was the terrible place you wished all your enemies and troubles to, and the scary place that dragons were not afraid to cross. He wanted to tell himself that the blue was okay - he hadn't gone to that place, he'd gone through that place! He was going somewhere else. Maybe he knew someplace better to go than here....
But it wasn't true. And Dolmin knew it wasn't true. And it was impossible to believe how that was more terrifying to him than the rampaging dragons of before, but it was.
So the tears had started. And soon the sniffles. And then the eight-year-old was simply curled up against the wall next to the crack, sobbing his heart out, regretting very much for a moment that he'd mocked his only company until she'd run away. A bit of company would have been very nice just then, if stupid Dolmin hadn't been so mean....
Tears streaking down her face as Fuxith's keen reverberated through her small frame, Zara turned to H'dra. Unknowing and uncaring of whether he actually wanted it or not, by Faranth she needed a hug and so she gathered her friend up into one, clinging tightly. "I...was afraid it'd be bad...but..." But oh, Faranth, how could anyone expect this?
It is alright to be sad. None will think less of us.
E'rik recovered relatively quickly from his shock and though he knew he ought to be soothing Dara he knew there was something more pressing he had to attend to. Despite having spent most of his life paralyzed by stage fright, he knew how to read crowds and their moods. He scanned the stands until he saw a familiar face now pale and drawn haloed by blonde hair. He made his way to Kyllae as quickly as he could, his gitar still slung across his back and suddenly feeling like a weapon. As he drew near her he took a deep breath, aware that his actinos would have unpleasant repercussions, but they had to be taken. It was the same action he would have taken whether he was a Harper or a Dragonrider or an absolute nobody.
He passed O'asis as he said to Kyllae, "Do you want to leave? If you come with me now I think I can get you out of here before anyone does anything regrettable."
Eponath had ended her keen not too very long after she had started, sensitive to the needs of Hers. It wouldn't be very good if Hers cried forever and ever, like she seemed she was going to do! Comfortingly, the tiny green nosed at the freckled girl. Do not worry Mine, your Eponath will be with you forever! And there is another, she seems very good. See Inaarimine? Watery brown eyes raised to see that there was indeed another dragon on the sands, looking calmer and more sure of itself than the poor lost blue.
"Perhaps," she started, sniffling heavily, "this might be saved. Thank you Eponath, I am glad you're with me." Squeezing her dragon tightly, she was gently herded by the Weyrling master into a cluster, Inaari wound her way snufflingly over to Goran, giving him a watery but game smile. "Are you ok, Gor..G'ran?" He was a dragonrider now, and entitled to the honorific.
Santhea bit down on her lip, ashamed by the angry babble coming from her own mouth. But the tears flowed freely down her face. She couldn't see anything, and missed the little green coming from the Freisian egg. She rubbed her eyes furiously, and looked up at the stands, at the dragons, running her eyes until she found the blue Dievath.
She wished the dragon would speak to her, as he did once before, but that was a selfish wish - it was unusual enough for him to talk to her in the first place. But she scrubbed her eyes against the heel of her hand, and looked back at the two eggs - then was struck by how there was only one.
Oh, a little green dragonet. She's beautiful.. Santhea thought, eyes wide. She..she doesn't know what just happened.. Looking at the calm green, marching confidently, crooning, Santhea felt the ugly anger drain away. The blue brought sorrow, but now the green brings.. hope..
It didn't take long for the green to march her way into the girls, pushing past one or two before she found the person she knew she was looking for. Of course, it didn't hurt to double check, because she was nothing if not accurate, and the green stood up on her hind legs to look the girl in the face. Ah, yes. This was Hers. She had found Hers and everything would be fine now, because she had found Hers.
Kesslanmine. Your Condoroth came as quickly as possible. She lowered herself and looked around at everyone still mourning, though she did not quite comprehend what was happening. What is going on? Do you want me to help?
