Haradhel looked at Kara through narrowed eyes. "I thought you didn't have Fading in your world," she said suspiciously. "Elnara told me you only have four seasons, Spring Summer Winter and Fall."
Timaeus shook his head. "No, not that time. He went back a week or so later though, but he told Aliya where he was going and made sure that Alyse stayed home that time."
He paused.
"Alyse didn't argue."

Kara blushed, "It made more sense, it's not summer... but the leaves are dying back home. We just don't have that concept, it's not that it doesn't exist, it's that society has grown up in that aspect where we have no word for that between season where it's too cool for summer but it's not quite fall yet. I guess I just got use to thinking that way when I"m here."
She thought about how many times she was here and laughed a bit more at herself than anything else as she scratched the back of her head.
"I've been through at least three season changes in the past year from being here. Sometimes I even get my solar months mixed up. I know for certain Lin always does."
"After a close call like that I would be surprised if she argued."
Lin shook her head, that was insane in her mind. She after all had limits.
"Geez... I think Aliya has had nearly one of the most worries. Adan had been kidnapped, Alyse and moor cats.. and I heard recently something about a falcon from Ryu."

"I see," Haradhel murmured, "but I think you're a little confused ... Fading is just before Winter, after Fall, not before it."
She smiled. "And of anyone, Lin has the right to get her months mixed up. Between here, your world, and the Southland, it's amazing she can still tell night from day, let alone know the days of the week and the names of the months."
"To be fair," Timaeus pointed out, "it wasn't as if she knew Adonai was going to be watching moor cats that day. She's always admired him, and she just randomly decided to go with him that day."
He paused. "And what's this about a falcon?"

Kara blushed a bit, it was a slip of the tongue after all. She agreed though with that assessment about how Lin kept everything straight.
She giggled though about the days of the week among other things, "I know... I know and I can tell. Actually her concept of time isn't so bad, except probably physically she is when she's at home staying up more hours than deemed healthy. Otherwise there isn't much confusion... though I have found out during Lin's school experiment that when she writes notes being dictated to her, she writes in the first language her mind can think of when writing anything down, which pretty much means her school notes are not readable by anyone but her."
"From what my understand is," Lin told Timaeus with an amused look as she took a long sip of her cinder, "Adwin has decided he is going to train a falcon, but to do that of course you need a baby straight from the nest. So he, with the help of his sister and father did exactly that."
She took another drink before setting down her mug and looking Timaeus straight in the eye.
"The last I checked falcons liked to live in cliff edges...."

Haradhel chuckled. "I've heard of that happening," she grinned. "Though I have to admit it's not one of the worst habits to have. After all, she'll still be able to read her notes, which is all that matters, and if it saves her time ..."
She shrugged.
"Not to mention, it's a great way to keep secrets."
Timaeus's eyes grew wide and began to sparkle with excitement. "Then I think," he murmured, "that tomorrow I'm going to be paying Adwin a bit of a visit. I'd love to see it ... I assume he went for a female?"
He would have loved to have had a falcon of his own as a child, but with his parents always busy, they hadn't had the chance. Not to mention, falcons weren't exactly the most common of birds ...

"It is," Kara laughed, "I'm just glad she can translate quick enough to do so, but I can see why she does it. Writing in any other language but English is quicker than writing in English. There are less characters."
She had written many notes in Japanese just because it was quicker and phonically more sound, it took up less room, you didn't need to squash it anywhere.... yes Kara could see why.
"Yes, from what I was told," she nodded at this statement, "I take it you would have liked that too wouldn't you?"
She could tell, it was like... a boy on Christmas. Well if they had Christmas to begin with that was she mused to herself. Perhaps a kid in a candy story was a better way to term it.
"Having a falcon I mean."

Haradhel nodded. "I've seen samples of some of her writing," she admitted, "and I have to say, the idea that a word can be conveyed in just one or two small symbols is appealing. On the other hand ... it's always easier, using what you already know rather than using something new."
Of course, the more one used it, the easier it would become ... but why change when the present system worked fine? Besides, it wouldn't be elvish without their rune systems.
Timaeus grinned. "You bet," he agreed. "But the opportunity never arose, so it didn't happen. Maybe someday, though. They're great hunters ... very loyal and once they're trained they're the best hunting aid you could have."

"It is... though I find more difficult. I don't know how Donovan does it, Japnese has two versions, one using symbols and the other is phonetic, the latter I find easier than memorizing... but Donovan has a large memory and good recall."
As she had discovered over the past two and a half years or so.
Lin smiled at that, "I do believe that was one of the reasons cited. Though I think Aliya was just not impressed since Adwin got mauled a bit by the parents."
Not that she could blame Aliya, but that was just her.

Haradhel agreed wholeheartedly. "He always remembers everything he's hear," she murmured. "And I would be amazed if he didn't know his way around the entire Borderlands by now."
He had traveled through them enough, Valar knew.
Timaeus chuckled. "Well, Aliya has every reason to be," he grinned. "They could have taken his eyes out, or slashed his throat, or something ... they're fierce creatures, the falcons. Proud, too."
He was amazed Adwin hadn't fallen from the cliff face ... the birds were smart, they usually tried to make the intruder on the nest fall ...

The rest of the evening passed quietly, just being able to talk was good for the two women, and Donovan got to rest for once. Actually really rest this time, something he normally didn't do. Better yet Lin came home at a decent time (which meant for dinner and not rushing to the table because she was late).
The only problem was Feng, Naida and Adonijah hadn't shown up yet. Night though descended and morning came. The Winters should have been ready to go... except they were still waiting on two people.

More snow had fallen over the course of the night, and when Adonijah woke from his doze the entrance to his little cavern had been covered entirely. The only visible light came from the orb that was still in his hands, though it was dim. He could barely see the forms of Feng and Naida across the cavern, and though his first instinct was to try to hide, he fought it and made himself relax.
He wondered if they were awake ...

Feng was dozing a bit still, there was no natural light to wake the mer up and she was use to natural light. Which might explain why she tended to sleep more during the winter. Naida however was not the same, she had her own time table of when to wake up which was early, which was why she was braiding her mother's hair while laying in her arms.
Though still muddy, Naida didn't really care, it would all clump off anyways. It was just more dirt than water.
When Feng did finally wake up she blinked a few times before figuring out where she was.
"What time is it?"

Well, that answered his question. Adonijah shrugged one shoulder, then looked towards the entrance.
"Early, I think," he said quietly, thinking. Then he added, even more quietly, "But I can't say until I see outside ..."
He stood up and brushed off his pants, then headed over to the snow-covered entrance and pushed one hand through it. The snow didn't bother him. He had always found his greatest solace outdoors, no matter the weather, no matter the temperature. It had been so for as far back as he could remember ...
When he had made a big enough hole, he twisted the orb in his hands until it vanished completely - not just the light, but its very essence - and then he stepped outside into the early morning air.
The sun was still in the precess of rising, and though he knew that his parents would already be awake, it was the animals that he thought of first: they would need feeding and mucking. Of course, Adanedhel would probably do that for him since he wasn't there, but ... still ... the animals would miss him ...
"I think we should go home," he murmured quietly, turning slightly to look back into the cavern at Feng and Naida.

Feng crawled out and stood up feeling the air against her skin, she didn't shiver, but she could feel the temperature difference. Though it didn't bother her, nor did it Naida in fact Naida was more interested in things around her.
"Look Mommy more white stuff!"
Naida giggled, she called it many things since discovering the thing called snow. She called it water crystals, frozen water, white stuff, but never snow.
Feng giggled before nodding at Adonijah, "We better, we're probably worrying people."

Adonijah looked around, the corners of his lips curling up slightly in a hint of a smile. Yes ... more snow. It was quite beautiful, really. If he were alone, he would stay out in it longer ... but he had to get Feng and Naida back to where they belonged so that Kara and Donovan and the others could all return home.
He motioned for the two girls to follow him and set out into the whiteness of the early dawn.
