Miriam The Bat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimono This is what I mean. I fear breaking social rules sad If you just want to wear it to experience how it feels, or to go to some sort of anime convention, wouldn't be too bad. I know a few people who have done it. But if you want to wear one to a formal afair, it might be different. ^_^;
Just remember why you want to wear one, and never give anyone a different impression.

LadyD - You haven't tried it yet! 0_0
Malee - I was surprised when I was looking at my friends list and saw your name in a new color. Congrats!
Sky Render - I don't think we've met yet. I'm Jen and as you can tell by my sig I'm a new mommy (again) so I'm pretty busy, but it's nice to meet you.

I want to wear a kimono because it's pretty, but I'm always afraid of showing cultural ignorance. It's like the time I went to a formal Japanese restaraunt in Hawai'i, and was scared of looking dumb coz I didn't know how to eat the food properly. All of the servers wore Kimono and there were even thoes little cubicle-like rooms where you took your shoes off and kneeled on the floor. And then my mom had to tell the waitresses that I was an anime fan... ugh...
My interest in Japanese culture came before my interest in anime. Likewise, my interest in Japanese-created cartoons and games came before I knew they came from Japan. I don't want to look like an otaku in the bad sense of the word.

I'm a half-korean american who hasn't been in korea since I was around 3 or 4, and I was never taught korean. I plan on moving there in a few years, and I still don't know any korean right now. XD Talk about fear of social ignorance..
While the majority of anime fans probably bring shame to millions of ancestors, not all of them do, and if a person is only willing to look at the surface before judging you, it doesn't matter how hard you try, or how concerned you are. Those people don't matter.

Miri, don't be afraid of looking dumb. I couldn't handle the wasabi at a sushi bar and everyone laughed at me. Probably a great first impression for my host family. rofl But I felt so stupid, but they treated me very kindly and even took the wasabi off the sushi for me so I could eat it. It was yummy.
So long as you don't think anime is the perfect way to learn about Japanese culture, you're fine.
Jen... heart *snugs* How are the kiddies doing?

I'm gonna have nightmares all night.
I have a phobia of ants. I really do. And lately, my house has been having an ant problem. Big black ones. I can watch them from a distance, though I don't enjoy it, but I always shriek of one gets near me or (even worse) on me. But no matter how many I squish through the saftey of a very long handled fly swatter, they keep comming back. Just a few minutes ago I went to grab something from the seat of a very ancient pink armchair, and saw at least five ants on it. They are crawling in and out of a hole in the fabric. They must be living inside it. I put my purse on the seat of that chair every day. I can see the chair from where I'm sitting, with thoes big black things crawlng all over it. My skin is crawling. Aughh.
What if there's like, a colony in there? How am I even gonna get over my fear and touch it to move it, let alone get rid of it?
Gwahhhhh....

Sounds like carpenter ants, have to call in the professional for those. My aunt's house had them once. I told my dad I saw a big black ant near the house and he freaked and checked every inch of the house. rofl It cracked me up.

Oh hell. My mom is never willing to pay money to correct a problem that will go away by itself... in the winter.
