Dari made eye contact with Maia and just continued to shake his head while Toby laughed at him.
"It's a sandbox," the alien said, "The world isn't linear. We could have been going in completely the wrong direction this entire time."

Maia paused. She pulled out her phone and was silent a long moment before she pulled up a walkthrough for the game. She offered the phone to Dari.
"Are we going the wrong way?"

"I don't want t--!" Dari began, but he took the phone. He'd see all of the coordinates and never be able to forget them! The game would be ruined! He offered it to Toby, who took it and started scanning the screen. It took him a while to figure it out, between phone and television.
"Do you really want to know?" he asked, turning to Maia.
"Is the world finite?" Dari asked.
"It is."

"Which way, left or right?" Maia asked, looking to Toby. That wouldn't ruin the game; and they'd probably get lost again running away from some boss.

"Northeast," Toby responded, and then had to look at the television screen. "That way." He pointed and Dari began to follow.
"Sort of," Toby added.
"Sort of?"
"Well it doesn't just run off and sit there..."

"Let's go find it," Maia followed Toby's character. "But if we run into any more giant eels I'm blaming you."

"We did quite a number on those last ones," Toby said. "We could do it again."
"So I'm assuming it has a path?" Dari asked.
"...sort of."
"Damnit, Toby!"
"What?! I didn't make the game!"
The boys laughed together.

"They tried to eat us, it was self defense." Being electrocuted and then eaten hadn't been Maia's preferred way to die, even in a video game.
"So it sort of drifts all over?"

"It has an area it roams in," Toby said. Dari nodded. Sure, that made sense.
"We could set up camp and just hope it comes by," Dari said, "Or we can keep looking for it in a more directed way."

Waiting was boring and it'd become tiresome. Maia opted for the second option. "We can look for it. Do you think it'll be friendly?" So few creatures in this game were. Sharks seemed to ignore you unless you came too close, though.

"I'm sure if we're nice to it, it'll return the favor..." Maia still didn't quite understand video game mechanics. She liked treating the creatures in game as she would have in real life--sometimes that didn't work out. Like with giant electric eels bred to cause death and destruction.
"What do you guys want to do tomorrow?"

Toby had one hand on his cup of tea and the other tangled in Maia's fingers. He glanced to her ring and smiled at her. Engaged. Good god, they were engaged.
"You know, we'll have to start planning the wedding soon. Places need to be reserved a year in advance sometimes."

Maia looked up. Wedding plans? She hadn't expected that, not so soon. She smiled at their hands. "Have you thought about where you'd like to have it?" she asked.
