It sounded like clan politics gone horribily wrong to Donovan, it was sad but he could have seen that happen in centuries ago with the clans. Hell, it could still happen now if someone stupid enough with power managed to pull it off, or someone with lack of foresight.

He really hoped she wasn't suggesting the drawves were still at it.

"I think Elnara mentioned him in passing," Triton commented, "Though never mentioned what he did."

Though now he could understand some of her past comments now. Somoene like that would seem absoluletly bad to the bone.

Sir Valdemar stopped reading and the illusion vanished, and the library returned to its natural state.

"The Valar loved it as much as we did," he murmured sadly, closing the book again. "When they took solid form, they often appeared as winged elves ... quite similar to your mother, actually. It doesn't surprise me that she would like how our world used to be."

He missed those times, that world ... but the age had ended far too quickly.

"Well, I'm sure that now you can understand why she might not wish to speak about it," Nadya commented softly, relaxing a bit once they passed the shrine. As they grew further away from it once more, her eyes returned to their semi-clouded state, her Sight returning to her once again.

"The elves suffered great losses," she went on, summarizing quite a bit now since these particular details didn't matter as much, "because no one knew until nearly a year into the war that Prince Riordan was the one who was telling the dwarfs every move that the elves had planned. What made it worse was that Prince Riordan and Lord Garrick were identical ... the only one who could tell them apart was Lady Serenity, but even she doubted her ability at times. The war ended when Lord Garrick was finally able to kill his own brother, and when Lady Serenity killed the dwarvish king."

She paused. "At least, that is when everyone believed it ended. And until now, I thought the same. The dwarfs were driven to the Northland, where they could be watched by the other races, and never again have the opportunity to attempt to take over the Four Lands. But still ... they plot. They have chosen a new leader, one who was close to their old king, and one who seeks to punish Lady Serenity to the limits of endurance. He killed her husband, which to most would be the cruellest thing imaginable; but now he is forcing her to live apart from her own children, a torture far worse than anything he could do to her physically."

She set her jaw and looked straight ahead. "That," she concluded, "is the man we must stop, and as personal an issue as it is, it will be difficult."

And who knew if another might not take his place only a matter of time after he was gone.

Lin wondered what was it with higher powers and wings, she kind of noticed that with the angels.

"Mommy likes high places, we're always on the top floor, and Trisha likes to rest in trees," she thought Trisha would like it too.

Yue nodded slowly that was true, though it was hard to imagine someone's grudge would be taken that far, "It's a pity that is what they have decided to do, they've done it very well," Yue hated to admit it, but give credit where it's due, "If they had focused their energies on other things though, they could have been a great society in a short amount of time."

"That's an angle we can play on," Donovan murmured after listening to both Nayday and Yue, thinking it over in his mind, "Afterall by now, someone there must want change, torturing the woman who killed your king is all well and good but it's not going to build homes for your people or put food in their bellies."

It was a pity there was a race problem made it difficult to even get information or find out if therew as anyone interested in perhaps improving thier lot in life.

"Either way, the next goal to getting rid of him, is convincing the people they don't want to continue trying."

If they couldn't play on the whole king as an issue where all he wants is to bother some elven woman too far away for them to care angle, well.. someone was going to die a rather messy death.

"Perhaps it's something to do with nature," Sir Valdemar suggested. "After all, one cannot get any closer to nature than to live in it completely."

And one could be no closer to their creators than to live with them, either.

He sighed softly and closed the book tightly, locking the clasp that held it closed. "So," he murmured. "So."

He glanced at Lin and smiled warmly at her. "Is there anything else you wish to know?" he asked her encouragingly.

Nadya waited for a moment before she answered Yue and Donovan. There were multiple questions that needed answering, and she didn't have all of the answers - at least, not yet.

But she would, she promised herself. She would find out all the answers for them.

First, she decided to address Yue's comment. "In the thirty five years that the dwarfs have been exiled in this land, they have recreated their society. I don't know how far it has grown yet, but they do survive. They marry, have children, jobs, society, economy, and settlements. I don't believe that they are all involved in this."

She had nothing more than a gut instinct about that, but her instincts had never steered her wrong before.

"I hope you don't plan in killing everyone off before we find out exactly what's going on, and who is involved," she added, glancing at Donovan. "And as to your comment about their way of life, from what I can see they live comfortably enough. But as I said, we'll have to see."

She only worried about what effect the sight of two elves, a neko, a human and an angel would have on those they needed to interact with.

Besides, Gion added, fingers flickering quickly where everyone would be able to see, it's not like the dwarfs are allowed to do whatever they want. They're surrounded by Elven watch towers, their trades and activities are monitored so that they can't do anything like what they've done in the past. If the entire race was after Mother, they'd all be exterminated fairly quickly. It has to be something more, something secret.

"Hmm...." Lin thought about that.

She wanted to know where the mountain was but she had a feeling he wouldn't tell her that bit, but what else could she ask?

"I don't know... I don't even know what I'm going to do.. what do you do for the rest of the day when you aren't teaching?"

Yue looked thoughtful, it sounded like they were well enough, but knowing the elves were keeping such an... opressive watch might cause problems.

"Well to be honest, I wasn't thinking the whole race was," Donovan replied, "What I mean is... is the fact the king if he is diverting funds to hire humans to attack a woman whom most of these people have never seen, who live so far away and just one elf.. even if she was an escape goat, there's a lot of people who might think that those funds could be put to better use," he shrugged, "That's assuming he's the one behind it, it's something to consider. Granted.. we won't know till we get there... now the question is... should we be hiding some of the extra features of our party?"

He meant Triton and Yue, they kind of stuck out...

"Ever more research and writing," the ancient elf replied with an easy smile. "Unfortunately, I find that there are never enough hours in the day to do all that I wish, and those with which I long to speak once more have vanished from this area of the world."

He held one hand out to her. "Come," he nodded. "I must return the book to its place." He waited for her to climb on him once more.

"I would find it very odd indeed if the people even knew what was going on," Nadya replied thoughtfully, drawing her cloak tighter around herself in an attempt to block out the penetrating cold. "As to hiding extra features ... I believe it would be wise, if possible, for all of you to disguise yourselves as elves. We will have to speak with the elves who are watching the dwarfs before we will be let in, and you four will draw attention that may hinder our mission."

She paused, lifting her eyes to look at the horizon. "At the very least, yes, Yue should hide his wings and Triton his ears and tail, or I fear we will not be allowed in."

But even traveling with humans would take some explaining.

Lin crawled back up so he could put the book away, "I can write," she told him, "I can with a brush, but it takes a while and ink drips everywhere."

She had learnt from Donovan and Donovan had let her paint brush with him just to make her stop getting into his stuff.

Yue eyed Donovan and Triton, "We can cover up our features that would be the easy part, but posing as elves but might harder..."

"Well for you it wouldn't be a problem," Donovan replied, "You're a bit taller than Elnara, but Triton that kid back at the castle she was what... ten? And she was Triton's height," he looked back at Gion, "It's one thing when one of us is a under the height, but two?"

And he wasn't sure for himself, he was six flat and only a bit shorter than Elnara as a result.
